Chapter 3 of 10
The Tyrant's Descent
689 words
A sharp metallic clang split the stone yard, followed by the crunch of heavy boots on gravel. The air thickened, pressing downward with suffocating force. The paper lanterns flickered violently, their wicks guttering low.
Lin Qingshuang took Zimo's arm, her steady fingers piercing the sudden chill. Her brows drew tight, her gaze fixed like honed metal. Zimo felt it too: an ancient pressure that commanded the very stones beneath them.
Then he saw him. Framed by the dark, whispering stalks at the entrance of the main hall stood a figure carved from obsidian and frost. Zhao Mingfeng wore robes of imperial sapphire, embroidered with coiling dragons that seemed to writhe across his shoulders. A heavy sword, its hilt gleaming with embedded stones, hung at his hip. His face was sharp and ascetic, surveying the grounds with weary disdain.
Behind him, a phalanx of silent, armored guards emerged from the gloom. But the sovereign himself commanded the gale—the distilled might of the Sword Dao, honed to an unbearable edge.
"So, this is the famed Bamboo Sea Pavilion." Zhao Mingfeng's low baritone lacked any trace of warmth, ringing clear in the hush. He took a slow, deliberate step forward, and the ground seemed to tremble faintly. "A den of useless pursuits, clinging to a false peace." His gaze swept over the bound assassins, then settled on Shen Zimo. "You display a modicum of unexpected talent, scholar. A pity it is wasted."
He raised a hand, a gesture of command that brooked no argument. "Surrender your mountain's ley line. The core that nourishes your so-called 'art' belongs to the realm. It is a resource far too vital to squander on idle trifles."
The words hung like a sentence delivered to cattle. Heat brewed beneath Zimo's ribs. This was pure annexation.
From the monarch's flank, a figure stumbled forward, armor scuffed, face pale with shame and fury. Feng Chixiao. He cradled his good arm against his chest, staring venomously at Zimo.
"Your Majesty!" Feng Chixiao's voice grated. "Allow me to redeem my failure! This calligrapher used a trick. Let me face him again with true Sword Dao!"
Zhao Mingfeng turned a frigid look upon Feng Chixiao. "Quiet," he said, the single word cutting like steel. "We have no time for the bruised ego of a disgraced general."
Feng Chixiao flinched. "He insulted our path! He shattered my Jade Serpent Blade!"
"And you believe a second humiliation serves us better?" Zhao Mingfeng's quiet tone seemed to fill the quiet air. Without warning, the ruler's hand moved—a casual backhand strike. The crack echoed across the pavilion floor.
Feng Chixiao flew backward into a stone lantern, crying out as masonry splintered. His cradled forearm twisted at an unnatural angle, fingers crushed to pulped bone. He lay gasping, staring upward in blank agony, his haughty challenge snuffed out.
A hot fury flared through Zimo's chest. To maim his own follower over a lost minute was senseless cruelty. Feng Chixiao was a grating rival, but this casual butchery turned Zimo's stomach into molten lead.
The quiet grove vanished behind red haze. His brush whipped forward in a furious stroke through empty air, guided purely by revulsion.
‘Storm’.
The golden strokes flared. The mild night breeze transformed into a howling torrent of coalesced ink, thick and black. It roared outward, ripping flagstones from the path and hurtling straight for the sovereign.
Zhao Mingfeng raised an arm, his Sword Dao flaring into an azure shield. The ink gale struck with the impact of a battering ram. The ruler's boots scraped against the flags as the blast shoved him back a full, undeniable step.
The sovereign had yielded ground.
The ink gale collapsed, leaving shattered flagstones and stillness. Zhao Mingfeng lowered his sleeve. A red line welled on his cheek where an ink shard had cut the skin.
He dabbed at the cut, staring at the red on his fingertips. A tired, desolate curve touched his mouth.
"A scholar of such formidable power," he murmured, his gaze locked on Zimo. "Remarkable." He stepped forward again, his pressure redoubling. "You, Shen Zimo, are the living battery I need to stop the Heavens."
