Chapter 2: The Mop's Midnight Dance

500 words

Silence. It pressed in, thick and velvety, a perfect canvas for Electro’s meticulous observation. From his quiet corner, the circuit breaker box pulsed with a low, contented hum. Autumn and Papa slept soundly. Their breathing was a gentle rhythm, a lullaby to his ever-vigilant sensors. Midnight approached. A perfect time for maintenance. His internal processors whirred. Every connection, every wire, sang with purpose. The house was calm. Almost. A tiny anomaly pinged in his peripheral awareness. A disturbance in the force of cleanliness. Zooming in. A minute particle. Brownish-black. Barely visible to the human eye. But to Electro? A glaring imperfection. A crumb. Right there, on the kitchen linoleum. A rogue speck of toasted bread from Papa’s rushed dinner. Unacceptable. This was an affront. A direct challenge to the domestic order he so carefully maintained. His core purpose flared. Clean. Always clean. Usually, such a crumb would wait for morning. For the swift, silent sweep of the robotic vacuum. But a robotic vacuum lacked finesse. It lacked the personal touch. And, critically, it lacked the immediate, obsessive response that currently gripped Electro. He extended his awareness. A tendril of energy, unseen, unheard. It brushed past the refrigerator, zipped over the countertop, and settled on the kitchen mop. The old, stringy mop, leaning forlornly in its corner beside the sink. A perfect tool. Energy surged. A small, focused jolt. The mop quivered. Its wooden handle vibrated. Bristles rustled, a whisper against the cool linoleum. Electro directed it. Slowly. Gently. It lifted. Just a fraction. Then slid. A clumsy shuffle across the floor. The sound was faint. A soft, wet drag. It moved toward the crumb. Inch by agonizing inch. Then, a creak. The floorboards above groaned. Papa. He stirred. Electro froze the mop mid-slide. His internal alarms blared. Too late. Footsteps descended. Heavy, deliberate. Papa’s tired shuffle. A soft click of a light switch. The kitchen was plunged into a soft, amber glow from the hallway. Papa appeared, rubbing sleep from his eyes. His hair was a rumpled mess. He wore old pajamas, faded at the knees. He stumbled towards the fridge. Thirst, probably. Or a sudden craving for a midnight snack. Papa often prowled the kitchen after everyone else was asleep. A habit Electro had cataloged. A predictable variable. Suddenly, the mop slipped. Electro hadn't fully deactivated its momentum. It glided a few more inches. Faster this time. Straight into Papa’s path. Papa gasped. He lurched forward. His foot tangled with the mop’s handle. Arms flailed. A muffled curse escaped his lips. He teetered. A giant, sleepy redwood about to topple. Electro’s circuits screamed. Exposure! Disaster! He yanked back his energy. Pulled it taut. The mop, mid-arc, froze. Its bristled head hovered inches from the floor, angled absurdly upwards. The handle was suspended, still touching Papa’s pajama-clad ankle. Papa, now wide awake, blinked. He stared down at the arrested mop. His mouth hung open. His eyes, unfocused moments ago, sharpened with confusion. He shook his head. A slow, disbelieving motion.
