Chapter 4: Whispers of the Hunt
560 words
The city breathes a cold, metallic sigh around Bobby. Rust-dusted wind whips through shattered window frames, carrying the scent of damp concrete and something else, something vital and electric, that makes his Braces hum. The metal in his mouth vibrates, a constant, low thrumming against his gums, a whisper that guides him. It’s a song only he can hear, a siren call to the hunt.
He moves like a shadow, low to the ground, his worn combat boots making barely a sound on the scattered debris of what was once a street. A fallen lamppost, its glass long gone, lies twisted like a broken spine. The skeletal remains of a bus lean against a condemned apartment block, paint peeling, revealing patches of angry red rust. Everything here speaks of decay, of slow, inevitable collapse, but Bobby feels alive in it, vibrant and sharp.
His eyes, dark and restless, scan every alleyway, every shadowed doorway. The air tastes different tonight, charged with a nervous energy that isn't his own. He felt it earlier, a prickle on his neck, the distinct sensation of being watched. A phantom, he tells himself, a trick of the exhausted mind. But the feeling persists, a cold knot in his gut that warps the familiar thrill of the chase into something akin to dread. He clutches the worn leather of his jacket, knuckles white.
He stops at the mouth of a narrow passage, the entrance choked with refuse. A discarded shopping cart, its wheels rusted solid, blocks half the way. Beyond it, darkness pools, thick and absolute. The whisper from his Braces intensifies, a soft, insistent tug, pulling him deeper. He listens, not with his ears, but with his whole body, for the faintest sound – a scuff, a breath, a quickened pulse.
There is nothing. Only the distant groan of settling structures and the ceaseless sigh of the wind. Still, the metallic tang of his mouthguard tingles. He takes a tentative step, then another, easing his way past the cart. The darkness swallows him whole, but he navigates by instinct, his pupils dilated to their limits. He passes a mound of old clothes, then a stack of splintered wooden crates. The air here is heavy, stale, thick with the scent of dust and something vaguely organic, something that might be fear.
He presses himself against a crumbling brick wall, tasting the grit on his lips. His heart thumps, not with fear, but with a fierce, almost painful anticipation. The hunt is a delicate dance, a slow, methodical unraveling. He moves forward, one careful foot in front of the other, his breath shallow. The whispers grow louder, a chittering symphony of steel and bone, urging him on. He wonders if it’s another Braced one, or someone still soft, still vulnerable. The thought makes his jaw ache, his teeth clench against the cool metal.
He pauses again, head cocked. A faint scuttling sound, like a rat, but too heavy. Too deliberate. It comes from the far end of the passage, where a sliver of moonlight slices through a gap in the buildings. He tightens his grip on nothing, ready. The thought of those watching eyes flashes through his mind again, a brief, unwelcome flicker of distraction. He shakes it off. There is only the hunt now, only the overwhelming desire to fill the hollow space inside him.
