Chapter 42: A Sister's Sacrifice
1.1k words
Anya's heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat in the sterile silence of the waiting room. Each tick of the wall clock felt like a hammer blow, marking the passage of moments that could decide Lily's fate. Her palms were slick with sweat, her knuckles white where she gripped the worn fabric of her jeans.
Hours bled into an eternity. Nurses bustled past, their soft-soled shoes making no sound, their faces a blur of professional calm. Anya watched them, searching for any sign, any whisper that might offer hope or dread.
Every breath was a struggle against the rising tide of panic. She remembered Lily's laughter, bright and clear, echoing through their small apartment. She remembered the way Lily's hand felt in hers, small and trusting, when they were children. Now, that hand lay limp, connected to a maze of tubes and wires.
A hand settled gently on her shoulder. Anya flinched, snapping her head up. Dr. Aris stood there, his face etched with a familiar weariness, his kind eyes clouded with concern.
“Anya,” he began, his voice low, “can we speak in my office?”
Nodding, Anya pushed herself to her feet, her legs unsteady. The world seemed to tilt slightly as she followed him down the long, aseptic corridor. The scent of disinfectant filled her nostrils, sharp and unforgiving.
Inside his office, the blinds were drawn, casting the room in a dim, subdued light. Dr. Aris gestured to a chair. Anya sank into it, her gaze fixed on his face, bracing herself for whatever he was about to say.
“Lily’s condition… it’s critical,” he stated, his voice devoid of emotion, a doctor’s practiced neutrality. “The infection has spread further than we anticipated. Her body is struggling to fight it off, even with the strongest antibiotics.”
Anya’s breath hitched. She squeezed her eyes shut, a single tear tracing a path down her cheek. “What does that mean? What’s next?”
“We’ve exhausted standard protocols,” Dr. Aris continued, his gaze unwavering. “There’s an experimental treatment. A highly specialized gene therapy. It’s shown incredible promise in clinical trials, but it’s still in its early stages. Very aggressive.”
Hope, fragile and fleeting, sparked within Anya. “Experimental… but it could work?”
“It offers the best chance,” he confirmed. “Perhaps the only chance left.”
Anya leaned forward, her heart thumping. “Then we have to do it. Whatever it takes.”
Dr. Aris sighed, running a hand over his tired face. “It’s not that simple, Anya. This treatment… it’s incredibly expensive. Unfunded by standard insurance, due to its experimental nature. The initial phase alone requires a significant upfront investment.”
Her shoulders slumped. Of course. Money. It always came down to money. Kaine's brutal assault on Vance Industries, the chaos Julian was fighting through – it felt like the universe was conspiring against her at every turn.
“How much?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper, dread coiling in her stomach.
He named a figure. Anya gasped. It was a sum so astronomical, it made her head spin. More money than she could ever dream of earning in a lifetime. More than Julian could easily spare right now, with his company under siege.
“We’ve already pushed the hospital’s resources to the limit,” Dr. Aris said, his voice softer now, tinged with genuine regret. “Lily’s case is complex. We believe in the potential of this therapy, but without immediate funding for the specialized medication and equipment, we simply can’t proceed.”
A cold dread seeped into her bones. Her mind raced, desperate for solutions. Julian. Could Julian help? But he was fighting his own war, a war Kaine had started, targeting everything he had. Could she ask him for this, knowing the immense pressure he was under? The thought of adding to his burden made her stomach churn.
Her gaze fell on her hands, the small, calloused fingers. She had nothing. No assets, no savings. Only her life, her future. What was she willing to give up? Anything. Everything. For Lily.
"Is there… anything else?" she asked, her voice cracking. "Any other options?"
Dr. Aris shook his head slowly, his expression grim. “Without this experimental therapy, her prognosis is… extremely poor. We’re talking days, Anya. Maybe a week, if she’s strong.”
Days. A week. The words echoed in the small office, each one a death knell. Anya’s vision blurred. This wasn't just a difficult decision; it was an impossible one. A choice between life and a slow, agonizing end.
She stood abruptly, pacing the small space. Her mind was a whirlwind of frantic thoughts. Sell her apartment? What good would that do against a sum like this? Take out a loan? Who would give her one for millions?
Suddenly, a memory flashed through her mind. Julian’s words. *“I'd give you anything, Anya. Just ask.”* He had meant it then, but things were different now. He was in crisis. Yet, was there another way? A way that didn’t involve Julian’s already strained resources?
Anya stopped in front of the window, staring out at the blurred city lights, her reflection hazy in the glass. She knew what she had to do. The decision, though heartbreaking, was crystal clear. It was the only path.
“Doctor,” she said, turning back to him, her voice firm despite the tremor in her hands. “What if… what if someone were willing to make a significant personal sacrifice? To ensure the funding?”
Dr. Aris raised an eyebrow, a flicker of surprise in his weary eyes. “What kind of sacrifice are you considering, Anya?”
Her jaw clenched. She couldn’t elaborate yet. Not to him. Not until she had solidified the plan in her own mind. The weight of it already pressed down on her, heavy and suffocating.
He watched her, his expression a mixture of concern and professional curiosity. “We just need the funds, Anya. How they are secured is… secondary, as long as it’s legal.”
Anya swallowed hard. Legal. Yes, it would be legal. But the cost to her… that was a different matter entirely. A cost she was prepared to pay. For Lily, she would pay anything.
“I’ll find the money,” she stated, the words a vow. “Just… tell me everything about this treatment. Every risk. Every side effect. I need to understand what Lily will go through.”
Dr. Aris nodded slowly, a hint of something unreadable in his gaze. “Very well. Come, let me show you the detailed protocol.” He turned to his computer, pulling up complex diagrams and medical jargon.
Anya tried to focus, but the numbers he had spoken still rang in her ears, impossibly large, impossibly urgent. She felt a cold certainty settle over her. She would save Lily. Whatever the price, she would pay it.
Walking out of his office later, the fluorescent lights of the corridor seemed to hum with a cruel indifference. Her mind was a maelstrom of fear and resolve. She saw the nurse at the station, her face somber as she looked at a chart. Anya knew that chart was Lily’s.
Dr. Aris had been clear. Without that funding, Lily had days. Not weeks. Days. And the experimental treatment was her only shot. The grim alternative loomed, a monstrous shadow. Anya closed her eyes, picturing Lily's pale face, the fragile rise and fall of her chest. There was no other way. She had to secure the funds. No matter what it cost her. She just had to find a way to do it without utterly destroying Julian, who was fighting his own battle. But how? The question gnawed at her, a relentless beast. She had to find a path, even if it led her straight into a life she couldn't imagine, a life she might never escape. The weight of her sister’s life rested squarely on her shoulders, and Anya knew she had to shoulder it, even if it crushed her. The sheer enormity of the financial requirement felt like a physical blow, leaving her breathless and shattered. She was devastated, but resolute. Lily would live.
