Chapter 36 of 50
A Vulture's Feast

Cool air conditioning did little to soothe the prickling heat on Julian’s neck. He adjusted his tie, the silk feeling like a noose, a stark contrast to the calm facade he presented. Before him, a sea of expectant faces, shareholders gathered for the quarterly meeting.
Projecting the latest financial report onto the large screen, Julian began his presentation. “Our Q3 performance has exceeded all projections, demonstrating robust growth across all sectors and a significant increase in market share for our AI integration division.”
Numbers, solid and undeniable, scrolled across the display. Julian spoke with a practiced confidence, his voice even, his gaze sweeping over the room. He knew his business, knew its strengths.
Whispers filled the room. A few nods of approval. Julian permitted himself a flicker of satisfaction. He was rebuilding. He was succeeding.
Suddenly, a low, resonant voice cut through the professional hum. “Indeed, Mr. Thorne. Impressive numbers.”
Marcus Thorne, impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit, rose from his seat in the third row. A predatory smile played on his lips, his eyes, like chipped ice, fixed on Julian.
Julian’s jaw tightened. He ignored the man, attempting to continue his presentation. “Our strategic acquisitions have solidified our position…”
“Acquisitions are certainly your forte, aren’t they, Julian?” Thorne’s voice, amplified by the sudden hush in the room, carried an insidious undertone. He stepped into the aisle, slowly making his way towards the front.
Shareholders exchanged uneasy glances. This was not typical meeting decorum. Julian clenched his fists, forcing himself to remain impassive.
“Some might even say, Julian, that you’ve built your entire empire on acquiring what wasn’t truly yours to begin with,” Thorne continued, his voice a mocking purr. He stopped a few feet from the podium, his gaze challenging.
Julian met his stare, a silent war of wills. “Mr. Thorne, this is a shareholder meeting, not a forum for baseless accusations.”
“Baseless?” Thorne’s laugh was a sharp, unpleasant sound. “Oh, I assure you, these accusations have a very solid foundation. A foundation built on betrayal and deceit, wouldn’t you agree?”
A ripple of murmurs spread through the room. Julian’s skin crawled. This was exactly what he had feared. Thorne was here to burn him down.
“Perhaps our esteemed shareholders would be interested in a little history lesson,” Thorne pressed on, ignoring Julian entirely. He turned to face the room, his expression one of feigned concern.
“Many years ago, a young, ambitious Julian Thorne made a deal. A deal with a shell company named Orion Holdings. A deal that effectively stripped a rival firm of its most valuable assets, leaving it in ruins.”
Gasps echoed. Shareholders started whispering louder, some leaning forward, intrigued despite themselves. Julian’s carefully constructed composure began to crack.
“He called it a hostile takeover,” Thorne elaborated, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “A bold, strategic move. But what he conveniently failed to mention was the personal element.”
Julian felt a cold dread settle in his stomach. Orion Holdings. The name itself was a wound. He tried to interrupt. “That’s enough, Marcus. This is irrelevant to today’s agenda.”
“Irrelevant?” Thorne’s eyes widened in mock surprise. “Is the integrity of your CEO irrelevant, ladies and gentlemen? Is the modus operandi of the man guiding your investments irrelevant?”
He paced slowly, like a shark circling its prey. “You see, Orion Holdings wasn’t just any shell company. It was a phantom, set up by a trusted family friend. A man who, at Julian’s behest, fed him insider information.”
Julian’s breath hitched. Thorne knew too much. Far too much. He remembered the desperate phone calls, the late-night meetings, the gnawing guilt that had plagued him for years.
“Julian manipulated a vulnerable elder, promising loyalty, only to turn around and use that trust to systematically dismantle his firm from the inside,” Thorne stated, his voice now devoid of any pretense of politeness.
He paused, letting the implication hang heavy in the air. “He took everything. The patents, the client list, the very legacy of a man who saw him as a son.”
Faces in the crowd were etched with shock, some with dawning horror. Julian saw their trust eroding, their investments suddenly looking precarious.
“And the man he betrayed?” Thorne asked, his gaze sweeping the room before landing back on Julian. “My father. Elias Vance.”
A collective gasp filled the room. Julian’s head snapped up. Elias Vance was Thorne’s father? No, that wasn’t right. Vance had no children. He had been a mentor, a family friend…
“Oh, you look surprised, Julian,” Thorne chuckled, reading his face. “Perhaps you thought all loose ends were tied up. Perhaps you thought a name change and a few years of philanthropy would wipe the slate clean.”
Julian’s mind raced. Vance, Thorne, Orion Holdings. Elara’s suspicions, his own buried memories. It was all clicking into place, a horrifying tapestry woven with deceit.
“This is a lie!” Julian roared, his voice finally breaking free. He slammed his hand on the podium, the sound echoing sharply.
“A lie?” Thorne smiled, a chilling, triumphant expression. “Do you truly believe that, Julian? Or do you just wish it were? Because I have all the records. The correspondence. The financial transfers. All of it.”
He gestured grandly around the room. “He built this empire on the ashes of another. On the broken trust of a man who loved him like his own. And I, as Elias’s rightful heir and his avenger, am here to ensure that every single one of you understands the true cost of doing business with Julian Thorne.”
Julian’s knuckles were white, his jaw rigid. He wanted to lunge across the distance, to silence the venomous words, but he was trapped, pinned by Thorne’s accusations and the stares of his shocked shareholders.
“And trust me, dear shareholders,” Thorne concluded, his voice dropping to a menacing whisper, “this is just the tip of the iceberg. The Orion betrayal was merely a prelude. There are far darker secrets buried deep within the Thorne family vault. Secrets that would not only shatter this company but unravel the very fabric of everything Julian holds dear.”
He leaned in, his gaze piercing, his promise chillingly clear. “I will make sure every last one of them comes to light. I will destroy everything you have built, Julian. And everyone you love.”
