Chapter 28: The True Enemy Rises

Leaning across the polished steel table, Elara studied the financial projections Julian had spread out.
His finger traced a convoluted series of transactions, all leading back to shell corporations. The scent of ozone from the lab equipment mingled with the faint aroma of the coffee they'd forgotten to drink.
"Kael's moves are aggressive, but… simplistic," Elara mused, tapping a pen against the page. "Like a blunt instrument. His targets are obvious, his methods crude."
Julian nodded slowly. A frown etched itself between his brows. "He’s good at what he does, but this feels… too easy for him to be the only one pulling the strings."
He pushed a hand through his dark hair, a gesture of deep thought. "Kael doesn't have the vision for this kind of long-game strategy. He wants to tear it down, not rebuild it for his own use."
Considering the recent attacks, the sabotaged equipment, the outright threats, Elara couldn't argue. Kael's methods were about destruction, not acquisition.
"So, who benefits most from the center's collapse, then its acquisition?" she pressed, her gaze sharp.
Julian’s jaw tightened. His eyes, usually a clear, intense blue, clouded with a shadow of something Elara couldn't quite place—regret, perhaps, or a deep-seated anger.
"There's someone else," he admitted, his voice low, almost a whisper. "Someone far more dangerous than Kael Thorne."
He took a breath, a visible effort. "My former mentor. Elias Vance."
Elara felt a chill trace down her spine. The name was unfamiliar, yet it carried an immediate weight of menace. "Your mentor?"
Julian pushed back from the table, rising to pace the small space. "Elias Vance was brilliant. Charismatic. He saw potential in me no one else did. Or so I thought."
He paused, staring out the reinforced window at the encroaching dusk. "We worked together on the 'Genesis' project. My original research. He helped secure the initial funding, introduced me to the right people."
"What happened?" Elara asked, her voice hushed. This was more than just a business disagreement.
"He saw my success as his own," Julian continued, his back still to her. "He wanted control. Complete, unadulterated control. He tried to claim the patents, the research, everything. When I refused, he dismantled my funding, tarnished my name, and left me with nothing but the remnants of my project and a mountain of debt."
That was the betrayal she'd heard hints of, the one that had sent Julian spiraling, the one that had almost destroyed him.
"Kael Thorne was one of Elias's enforcers back then," Julian finally turned, his face etched with grim determination. "A brute force solution to any problem Elias couldn't charm or manipulate his way out of."
