Chapter 5 of 10

The Override Paradigm

960 words

Night across the high terraces settled into a bruised purple smear against the greasy glass of the rooftop stall, ‘The Serpent’s Coil’. Steam from simmering bone broth drifted over the sparse clientele, mingling with fermented bean paste and ozone. Vashka, still trapped in Kyrian Xylos’s tailored suit with the jacket slung over a bent aluminum chair, slurped starch threads with theatrical abandon. Across the scarred metal table, Lescara Vostra ignored her cold bowl of puffed grain, watching him beneath the glare of a distant soda billboard. “You’re not eating,” Vashka observed, wiping his chin with the back of his hand, a move Kyrian Xylos would never dream of. “Worried about your figure? Or is Orenze’s head cyber-goblin just too busy plotting to digest?” Lescara’s expression remained flat. “I’m worried about the 30-day deadline, Xylos. Not my caloric intake. Did you get anything useful from Level 40 beyond making the board’s art budget scream?” Vashka grinned, pushing a data-slate across the table. “Oh, I got something. A little package Rylin hid like an Easter egg for his favorite grandson. Which, apparently, is me.” He tapped the screen. The schematic of the Vrost Spire’s underground catacombs unfolded, the central vault glowing red at its core. “Found it nested in an HR terminal, disguised as a severance package file. My grandfather, the absolute madman, named it ‘ORENZE_SUCKS_DOT_MAP’.” Lescara picked up the slate, her fingers flying over the interface with practiced ease. She zoomed in, her brow furrowing as lines of code scrolled across the display, a deeper layer beneath the visible map. Her gaze sharpened, tracing the intricate data streams embedded within the schematic. “This isn’t just a map, Vashka,” she murmured, her voice tight. “This is a key. This marker… it’s not a vault holding the will. It’s the trigger mechanism.” Vashka leaned forward, suddenly serious, his earlier jocularity peeling away like a cheap sticker. “Activation mechanism for what?” Lescara’s eyes, usually so guarded, now held a flicker of something close to awe, mixed with stark disbelief. “The will… it’s not a distribution of assets. It’s a complete network purge. It is a master purge protocol designed to zero out the dynasty's holdings. Every credit, every data-shard, every single asset registered under the family banner. It’ll be completely reallocated.” Vashka blinked. “Reallocated? To where? Some tax-haven account? A hidden crypto-wallet?” “No. Look at these sub-routines.” Lescara pointed to a section of the scrolling code. “These aren’t standard wealth transfer protocols. This is a massive, distributed ledger system. It’s designed to siphon off the hoard and dissolve it into micro-payout networks across the lower city tiers. Every resident with a zero-balance credit line, every unregistered denizen… it disperses the lot. Burns the dynasty to the ground and scatters the ash.” The rooftop hum died behind the whistle of the soup vats. Orenze’s hijacked syndicate, shredded to zero. Not just reclaiming a birthright, but dismantling what the imposter built on an old man's corpse. A thin smirk tugged at Vashka's mouth. “So the old bastard wasn't just disinheriting the leech. He built a dirty bomb inside the vaults. This isn't just about getting my face back. This is watching Orenze's stolen life melt into toxic sludge.” His tone dropped, devoid of theatrical charm. Lescara traced the slate's edge, her fingers digging deeper into the map’s hidden tiers. “Precisely. And since Orenze’s identity is fabricated, his legal pedigree is void. If exposed as an orphan swap, he loses everything. System permissions, status, his legal existence in the municipal registry. The wipe protocol deletes him.” “So the play isn't just proving who I am, but tripping this purge before the month expires,” Vashka said, drum-tapping his knuckles on the cold table. “If I succeed, my true name locks in, and his stolen regime collapses. Along with his legal immunity to butcher me.” “Yes. But there’s more.” Lescara froze, narrowing her gaze at a string of entries nested beneath the core architecture. Her thumb hovered as she isolated a unique cipher mark. “This… this is an assassin's watermark. A shadow-broker known for scrubbing entire lineages off the grid. A specific fingerprint in the sub-routines. I’ve hunted it for years.” Her knuckles paled against the slate's casing. “This mark belongs to the broker who erased my sister.” Vashka watched her flat composure slip into raw venom. “That broker is tied to this? To the vault?” “The cipher mark sits in the root entry log,” Lescara said, steel creeping back into her tone. “He helped construct the biometric locks, perhaps the initial purge architecture, before Rylin sealed the sector. He may have served Rylin, Orenze, or played both sides. Crack that vault, and we capture his source data. We can hunt him down.” The tension shifted between them into something sharper than an alliance of convenience. Vashka’s prickling caution, usually an aimless itch, found a focal point. He scanned the open dining deck, a reflex from gutter years. Steam from the kettles. The hum of rain-soaked neon. The bowed shoulders of the cook, obscured beneath a woven brim, ladling broth into an earthenware bowl. The man's rhythm was too measured, his breathing too slow for a line cook working a rush. “Orenze isn’t going to just let us waltz in there, is he?” Vashka muttered, more to himself than Lescara. “He knows I’m a problem. He’s already tried the laser turrets.” Lescara parted her lips to speak when the cook pivoted. Not to dish broth, but to strike. The heavy ladle clattered against the grease trap as polished alloy slid from his forearm sleeve. A mono-molecular edge, thin as a hair, flashed in the signage light toward Vashka’s throat. No corporate insignia. No municipal transponder ping. A clean hit contract, ignoring legal channels. Orenze had sent an unregistered blade.
