Chapter 9 of 10

A Kiss of Vermilion Dawn

He Qiusheng’s many eyes narrowed, gleaming. “And to think, the final catalyst was planted by your own sister. A cup of calming tea, offered by Qiao Meiling herself, just before she fled the manor. Such a thoughtful girl.” The scent of steeped winter-aconite lingered beneath the floorboards. Meiling’s flight had bought her skin at the cost of his veins. Before Rulan could lunge past the snare, Zongyuan shuddered. His posture, once impossibly straight even in his weakened state, wavered. The radiant script that typically traced his pupils flickered, then dimmed. His aura, which had been a towering shield of protective power just moments before, fractured, sinking inward like a collapsing star. His jaw went slack, his gaze losing its sharp focus, and he swayed precariously. “Zongyuan!” Rulan cried out, struggling against the ensnaring red tendrils that tightened around her ankles, digging into her boots. The blood-array hummed with malevolent energy, reinforcing its grip. He Qiusheng watched with a triumphant sneer, his grotesque form shifting, the stolen roots within him squirming with anticipation. Zongyuan’s eyes, though still open, were blank. His body stiffened, then slumped, completely inert. The ink-drawn brush of pure energy he had wielded dissolved into drifting flecks of ash. His power, his very life, seemed to be ebbing away, leaving him a motionless husk. “A potent tranquilizer,” He Qiusheng chuckled, a sound like grinding stone. “Designed to paralyze the energy pathways of even a nascent Heavenly Scholar. Meiling’s last useful act before she became utterly irrelevant.” Rulan’s vision blurred with sudden, searing fury. The Qiao family’s betrayal and her sister’s spite ground against her ribs like crushed porcelain. But rage was useless now. Zongyuan was dying, again, and she was helpless, pinned by the blood-array. Her independent spirit, usually an unyielding wall, crumbled. Her goal of freedom meant nothing if he lay dead beneath her boots. “System!” she screamed through her thoughts. “He’s seized! He’s dying! What can I do? Anything!” [Warning: Host has entered critical state of emotional distress. Request for extreme intervention detected.] [Immediate action required to prevent irreversible organ failure in co-bound partner. Ultimate sanction available: Soul-Cleansing Meridian Reconfiguration via direct spiritual infusion. Requires complete dissolution of current System core defenses. Prognosis: Host will experience full-spectrum spiritual agony. Success rate: Unknown. Potential side effects: Permanent consciousness degradation, loss of self. Proceed?] The words flashed, stark and terrifying. Spiritual agony. A hollowed mind. The ultimate phantom needle strike magnified tenfold, tearing through the marrow of her skull. But Zongyuan… he lay there, lifeless, because of her failure, her initial hesitation to trust, her relentless prickliness that had always pushed potential allies away. She couldn't lose him now, not after he had bled for her, fought for her, chosen her. “Yes!” Rulan screamed internally, the single syllable echoing with absolute conviction. “Proceed! I accept the full sanction!” [Sanction confirmed. Initiating Soul-Cleansing Meridian Reconfiguration. Warning: Extreme pain cascade imminent.] A searing spike hammered into Rulan—not a focused pinprick, but a cascade of raw torment stripping every nerve bare. It felt as though invisible hands were prying open her skull, tearing apart the very fabric of her soul, rearranging her internal landscape with brutal force. Her vision whited out, and a silent, guttural cry tore from her throat, lost in the echoing silence of the pain. Her muscles seized; the crimson cords of the blood-array gnawed cold against her shins, yet the bite went unnoticed. Her awareness splintered under the crushing pressure. Yet, through the blinding torment, a single image persisted: Zongyuan’s slack face, the ember in his pupils gone cold. This was for him. For his fierce loyalty, his quiet protection, his unwavering belief in her. This was for the warmth that had finally begun to bloom in her own cold, neglected heart. She would rupture her own marrow to save him. As the internal tearing peaked, the pressure abruptly swung. The tearing eased into a scalding tide, an unblemished current rising from her core and spilling outward. Her hands, still pinned to the stone floor by the array, began to glow with a soft, ethereal light, an aura of vibrant, living jade. The light pulsed, humming with an ancient power. The blood-array, which had seemed impregnable moments before, recoiled. The scarlet tendrils encircling her ankles hissed, shriveling under the intense, purifying glow. With a desperate, primal roar, Rulan twisted her wrists, her glowing hands slamming down onto the etched vermilion lines. The stone floor beneath her cracked, the blood-array’s lattice-work shattering into crimson dust. The binding power evaporated, and she was free. Without a moment’s hesitation, Rulan scrambled to Zongyuan’s side, ignoring the lingering tremor in her limbs, ignoring the stinging phantom echoes in her skull. His lips were pale, his skin cold. Time was running out. She didn't think, only acted. Cupping his face with one glowing hand, she pressed her lips firmly against his. It held no gentleness, serving only as a channel for survival. Pure, crystalline spring water, supercharged by her newly reconfigured System core, flowed from her mouth into his. It tasted faintly of wet slate, cutting through his blocked conduits straight into his dantian. The moment the water touched his tongue, a powerful jolt surged through Zongyuan’s body. His eyes, previously vacant, snapped open, blazing with an intensity that outshone any star. Verdant brushstrokes erupted from his pupils, coiling into a storm of ink that took the shape of a coiled, horned serpent. His Heavenly Scholar Root, once fractured, now thrummed with a vitality that pulsed through the entire academy, restored and evolved into something far grander, far more ancient. His spine locked straight, iron-hard and unyielding. “You… you saved me,” Zongyuan rasped, his voice a low tremor of pure power, his hands rising to cup her face, his thumbs brushing against her cheekbones. His gaze, fiercely protective, found He Qiusheng. The monstrosity was recoiling, an ancient fear dawning in its many eyes. “Grandmaster He,” Zongyuan intoned, his voice dripping with lethal calm, “you sought to consume my root. Now, you shall witness its true power.” With a flick of his wrist, Zongyuan did not conjure a brush, but became one. His right arm swept forward, drawing concentrated ink from the open air. A great wyrm, scales of smoldering vermilion and eyes like twin furnace vents, roared into being. It moved with violent hunger, strokes of dense script snapping through the floor stones. The beast lunged, its broad jaw eclipsing the grotesque Grandmaster He. It coiled around the knotted nest of stolen roots, its boiling pigment searing through graft and sinew. He Qiusheng shrieked, a sound of agony and terror as his stolen power, his very being, was devoured by the beast's black-toothed maw. The roots within him blackened, withered, and ignited, consumed from the inside out. He thrashed, a dying monument of greed and ambition, before disintegrating into cinders that scattered across the ruined floor. The ink serpent unraveled into a shower of amber ash, settling across the stone. The air, heavy with the stench of burnt flesh and raw power, slowly cleared. Rulan leaned against Zongyuan, utterly drained, but alive. He held her close, his warmth a tangible anchor in the chaotic aftermath. Their victory, however, was short-lived. A sudden, synchronized stomp echoed from the shattered courtyard beyond. The ground vibrated with the purposeful tread of a legion. As the dust settled over the ruined Iron Ink Academy, the Emperor's Royal Guard marched into the courtyard with weapons drawn.
