Chapter 1 of 1
Chapter 1
2.8k words
I heard unfamiliar voices.
When I opened my eyes, I saw the remnants of people moving around in a hurry. I blinked blankly. A shadow cast over your head. A voice shouting urgently. It looks like it is rushing somewhere.
All my senses haven’t awakened, so I’m out of my mind. As I closed and opened my heavy eyelids, the smell of dirt and gunpowder tickled my nose.
And then you see the muzzle of the gun pointed at you.
what?
The moment I thought about it, a sharp voice woke me up.
“What are you!”
That’s what I want to say.
“It came out of nowhere!”
I raised my upper body.
My field of view has become much wider. I saw several guns pointed at me. A blinding white light falls on the remnants.
What’s happening.
I thought blankly as I saw five people holding guns, a large room with a high ceiling, and a man standing in front of me.
The owner of the voice was a man holding a gun between my eyes.
The man had curly hair and bright hazelnut-colored eyes.
“Where did you come in?”
“Where am I?”
I muttered, looking into the man’s clear eyes. His head wasn’t working very well.
Did you fall asleep while drinking?
“What was I doing?”
“Hey, don’t talk nonsense!”
The curly-haired man frowned.
“Where and when did you come in?”
He seemed like a person with personality. But I really have no idea what the situation is. He saw a man leaning towards me.
The man was dressed like everyone else. Wearing a pitch black special suit that looks like it can absorb light. He was wearing black gloves and holding a huge sturdy-looking gun.
The man stabbed me in the neck with the pitch-black muzzle of a gun. I felt the cold touch of his gun.
Isn’t this a pretty dangerous situation?
“Do you want to keep saying stupid things? “Are you kidding me?”
“as.”
The person standing behind opened his mouth.
“I guess there was a problem with the portal. “Put the gun away.”
A girl with round eyes joined in. She had her black hair tied up and was holding a gun the size of her own torso. Perhaps because she was the only Asian girl, I easily caught her eye.
Why is a kid who looks like a high school student, or at most a first-year college student, holding a gun like that?
A curly-haired man called Ro suddenly turned his head.
“Hey, find out what kind of guy he is and put away the gun!”
“So it looks like there’s a problem with the portal.”
The girl walked this way with long strides.
“Maybe it was briefly connected to another portal.”
Put your gun down, Ro. The woman nagged calmly.
I looked at the girl approaching with both hands on the floor and the people standing behind her.
They were impressive people dressed in black. It didn’t seem like he was an ordinary civilian. The gazes fixed on me were so sharp as to cut me.
Moreover, even though I told him to put away his gun, he was prepared to shoot me immediately if I did anything suspicious. The smell of gunpowder and dirt wafting around.
Where am I? What did I do that ended up here?
The high-ceilinged, pale space was unfamiliar to the eye. Judging by people’s reactions and my feelings, it doesn’t seem like a place I’ve been to. I had no idea why I woke up here.
And what was I doing?
The moment I was confused by the past that could not be remembered, a girl stopped in front of me.
She looked down at me sitting down with round eyes.
“hello!”
She greeted in a bright voice and held out her right hand.
“This is Ami Choi! “Please call me Ami.”
“… “This is Hildebert Taleb.”
I reflexively held Ami’s hand.
“Please feel free to call me Hilde.”
But I don’t remember when and by whom I was called Hilde. The memories faded away.
Since when has it been like this?
I stared blankly ahead, embarrassed by the empty memories. I feel my heart sinking and I start to silently panic.
At the same time, the outstretched hand was handcuffed.
***
He was taken away somewhere in handcuffs.
I wasn’t dragged roughly. Because I was absorbed and followed what I was told. Shocked by the memories that had flown away, I foolishly followed the woman named Ami.
The people in the room were on both sides and behind me. A man called Ro was on my left, and a tall man with soft long eye corners was on my right. A small girl with two-toned hair and a man wearing a mask that goes up to his nose follow behind him.
It looked like they were escorting a VIP.
In reality, it was surveillance, not escort.
I walked down the wide hallway and arrived at my room.
A room with several white desks and chairs. It was a room that was either normally used as a conference room or seemed not to be used at all.
Ami removed the chair from the desk in the middle of the room.
I sat quietly in my seat with my hands handcuffed.
“Mr. Hilde?”
“yes?”
“I’m going to make a phone call.”
I blinked in confusion at Ami’s unexpected words.
I foolishly looked at the person in front of me and answered hesitantly.
“Oh, yes. yes. “Don’t worry about me, just talk on the phone slowly.”
The Asian girl rolled her eyes and smiled.
She opened the front door and went out into the hallway.
At the same time, silence fell into the neat room. Everyone took their seats and shut him up. It looks like they’re waiting for something, but it doesn’t look like things will change for a while.
At this point, I need to think freely.
I began to take full advantage of the silence that came and tried to remember what kind of person I was.
I’ll be amazed. Why can’t I remember anything other than the name?
I couldn’t remember a lot of things. No, I couldn’t remember most of them. It felt like someone had washed my memories away with water. Since I was handcuffed, I have been trying to remember where I came from and who I am, but without success.
Only fragmentary and useless memories popped out. Things like the scene where he was riding in the passenger seat and looking out, or the scene where he was playing a game on a game console slightly larger than the palm of his hand.
I straightened my sitting posture with a frown.
“Do you want to go to the bathroom?”
The man sitting next to Law broke the silence with a grin.
“If you want to go, go~… .”
I blinked.
“no. it’s okay.”
I tried to straighten my back and looked at the other person.
“Thank you for caring me.”
“If you want to go, feel free to tell me anytime~”
The man’s eyes were bent into a crescent shape. Bright green eyes narrow.
ah. I have a bad personality.
I decided that I should not offend that man as much as possible.
He may appear to be smiling, but in reality, he is a very sensitive and perceptive person.
The green-eyed man was sitting lazily on a chair in front of the whiteboard. He is lazily leaning against the back of his chair, his legs crossed, and his hands in his pockets. Still, he couldn’t find a loophole in the man.
He is a person who seems to be in big trouble if he crosses the line.

I added politely, looking at the other person’s long eyes, black hair, and neat features.
“thank you.”
“you’re welcome… .”
“hey.”
Law, who was tapping his cell phone next to the green-eyed man, looked up.
“yes?”
“Where are you from?”
Law sat back in his chair and tapped his foot.
“Did you say you don’t remember?”
“yes. sorry. “I’m trying to remember, but only useless memories come to mind.”
“What comes to mind?”
“… Well, I remember playing games on game consoles… .”
I frowned and tried to think of more useful information.
But this time too, it failed miserably. Only unhelpful scenes passed through my mind, such as a clean room with two apples, coffee milk with a straw in it, and leftover scones.
I let out a small sigh.
“… sorry. I can’t think of anything worth telling you. Strangely, I only remember the name and no other personal information.”
“Did your memory disappear when you crossed the portal? .”
The green-eyed man muttered to himself.
“I heard similar things happened sometimes in the past, but I don’t know if it’s solid information or not… .”
“Hey Mr. What’s going on? I came back from the portal and suddenly a person I had never seen before appeared. No matter how stupid I am, I know that if 5 people go in, 5 people have to come out. But the number of people who came out was 6. Does that make sense?”
“I guess that’s why we’re doing this here right now because it doesn’t make sense~. I was planning to go back and wash up and smoke a cigarette as soon as I got home… .”
The green-eyed man spoke slowly and tilted his head to one side.
“I want to get off work… .”
“sorry.”
I responded reflexively as I watched the smile disappear from the green-eyed man’s face.
“You can smoke here. I am okay.”
Law and the green-eyed man, who were lazily staring into space, turned their attention to me. I felt like the eyes of those standing behind me were on the back of my head.
I feel like I’ve become an animal in a cage.
He smiled bitterly and received the flying gaze.
But before I could open my mouth to speak, the door opened.
“They say there isn’t one!”
Ami came running in with her eyes wide open.
“They say there is no one who looks like Mr. Hilde, nor anyone named Hildebert Taleb, anywhere in the Center Core or any other Core.”
“What are you really?”
Law arched his dark eyebrows and glared at me.
“Where on earth did it come from?”
“… sorry. But I’m also really confused… .”
“First of all, Scar contacted me.”
Until then, let us wait patiently. Ami waved her palm as if trying to comfort Nawaro.
I watched closely as Ami closed the door and approached me. I couldn’t see where the gun I had just been holding had gone.
I tried to get the information into my head as I watched her approach. Her memory was blown away and she felt like she was a new baby and learning everything all over again. Who is Scar? And what do you mean by center core and core?
Where did I come from in the first place? I tried to remember my country of origin. I didn’t even forget the name of the country. USA, UK, Australia. I remember everything, but I couldn’t remember what country I was from.
I asked as I watched Ami put down a paper bag on her desk.
“Somewhere here?”
Ami, Law, and the green-eyed man raised their heads and looked at me.
“Uh, I mean country. Which country am I in now? “Is it America?”
People’s expressions became strange.
Silence came. A strange atmosphere flows through the dull room.
I blinked, confused by the change in atmosphere. why. I sat in silence, alone and embarrassed.
Why is this reaction… .
It was Law who broke the silence and spoke angrily.
“What are you talking about again?”
“There is no country called America anymore.”
The green-eyed man cut off Law’s irritated and suspicious sentence.
His sharp green eyes stared right into my eyes.
“It’s been a while since I heard this… . That proper noun.”
I blinked at the words I couldn’t easily understand.
“yes?”
“It means that borders no longer exist. They say students these days don’t really understand the concept of a nation… . “Do you remember how old you are?”
“yes? no… . I’m sorry, but I don’t remember that either… . yes? hmm?”
I was confused for a while, so what? repeated the words. I couldn’t understand what the green-eyed man was saying.
The green-eyed man repeated the same words. Now there are no borders and everyone lives in the core. I tried to merge fragmented memories with new information. But it was a fruitless effort.
Clearly, in my memory, there were many countries.
Some countries I remembered clearly. USA, UK, China, India.
It seems like I was panicking for a long time.
After a while, I came to my senses. I intentionally focused on my five senses to escape confusion and wandering. The room was quiet and motionless. The white incandescent light and the pleasant smell of a wooden desk. The people in front were staring at me, waiting for me to open my mouth.
I could barely open my mouth as I felt the cold air.
“Then where do you three come from? What country are you from… . Which country are you not from? What exactly does it mean to have no borders?”
“ah.”
The green-eyed man, who was sitting motionless with his legs crossed, slowly smiled.
“That’s a difficult question~. It just so happens that the three of us are a bit older. I am originally from Italy~. I’m a center core person now, but… .”
“Sicily.”
Law interjected crudely.
“Those two kids behind you are from Center Core. “This kid is from China.”
“I was from Korea!”
Ami, who was observing me with wide eyes, jumped up. I was startled by Ami’s sudden anger.
As I stared at Ami with wide eyes, the green-eyed man smiled at me. Ami looked down at her and pounded her desk, as if she was aware of the reactions of those around her.
“I told you dozens of times, me and Yoon are Korean! The Chinese person is the head of human resources! Mr. Joo!”
“Oh, is that so? “What do you think?”
“No problem! “You’ve been my comrade in arms for 40 years. How can you still be confused about my original nationality!”
“Hey, speaking of which, where is the personnel manager? “An unknown human has risen from the ground. Shouldn’t we come and see it?”
“Mr. Joo is not coming.”
Suddenly, the true Ami opened her eyes and spoke.
I saw Law and the green-eyed man blink.
Ami with round eyes added indifferently.
“It doesn’t seem like it’s urgent and there doesn’t seem to be anything special to do right now.”
“crazy. “If the appearance of humans out of thin air is not an emergency, then what is an emergency?”
“I don’t know.”
“You reported it to the commander-in-chief, right?”
The green-eyed man asked slowly.
“What did he say… ?”
“They said you should come as soon as possible. He said Assistant Scar would handle it for now. John and Yoon are currently checking the status of the portal. Samuel said he would prepare everything for Hilde’s physical examination. “The human resources department must have prepared for the polygraph.”
“I… .”
I carefully intervened. I felt people’s eyes focused on me again. It wasn’t a very pleasant reaction, but I couldn’t suppress the question lingering in my mouth.
I was putting the pieces of the puzzle together through the fragmented information they gave me and their conversations. For example, I might have popped out of a portal out of nowhere. The fact that there are no borders anymore, the US and China do not exist, and people live in a place called Center Core.
The pair of man and woman standing silently behind me must be of the lowest status… .
I asked what I couldn’t understand.
“How old are you three?”
A smile appeared on the lips of the green-eyed man and Ami. A mischievous smile appears on Law’s face.
I blankly looked at these people smiling brightly.
I waited for the people who were smiling at me to say something.
It was ARMY who answered. She smiles brightly at me.
Then he spoke cheerfully.
“70 years old!”
