Chapter 3: The Contract of Blood

Red lasers sliced through the dark, damp alleyway, painting thin crimson lines across the wet brickwork. Rainwater dripped from the rusted fire escapes above, mixing with the cold sweat on David’s forehead as he pulled back into the shadows. Behind him, Linnea pressed her back against the decaying wall, her breathing ragged and shallow as the remnants of the Coalition’s poison continued to burn through her system. Heavy boots stomped on the wet pavement just around the corner, accompanied by the low, mechanical hum of search drones. Their situation was deteriorating by the second, the tight alleyway rapidly turning into a dead-end trap. Hovering in David’s peripheral vision, the blue holographic display of his system flickered silently, showing a warning that made his blood run cold. `[Warning: Coalition Enforcers approaching. Host survival probability: 4%.]` `[Recommended action: Initiate Dynasty Blood Oath with available high-affinity partner Linnea Vance (99% Affinity).]` Looking at the glowing text, David felt a cold knot of determination tighten in his chest. He turned his head to look at Linnea, whose pale face was flushed with the remaining heat of the poison, her fingers trembling around the hilt of her dagger. "We aren't going to make it out of here by running," David said, keeping his voice to a whisper. Linnea glared at him, her chest heaving as she struggled to maintain her balance. "I can still fight. I don't need a nine-percent trash telling me what my limits are." David stepped closer, his shadow falling over her as he ignored her venomous tone. "You can barely stand, let alone fight an entire squad of exo-suits. Listen to me. The Coalition tracks high-gene signatures, and your twenty-eight percent rating is like a flare in the dark to their scanners. They will find us in less than two minutes." She frowned, her sharp eyes scanning his face for any sign of betrayal. "And what do you propose? That I surrender to them?" "No," David said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous quiet. "I propose a contract. A transactional marriage, bound by the ancient dynasty blood oath." Linnea scoffed, a bitter, breathless laugh escaping her lips. "Are you insane? A high-born Vance binding her bloodline to a gutter-born nobody?" "That gutter-born nobody just saved your life with a pill you couldn't dream of buying," David countered, his jaw clenching as the sound of marching boots grew louder. "And more importantly, the oath will mask your high-gene signature with my low one. It will scramble their trackers. You become invisible to their scanners, and I get the strength to carry us out of here." Metal scraped against brick as the enforcers pushed through a pile of discarded crates at the mouth of the alley, their heavy searchlights cutting through the darkness. "Thirty seconds," David urged, holding out his hand. "You hide in plain sight. I get the power to fight. It's purely pragmatic. No romance, no expectations. Just survival." Linnea stared at his outstretched hand, her eyes darting between his desperate, calculating expression and the looming shadow of an exo-suit reflecting off the wet pavement nearby. "If you are lying to me, I will end you myself," she hissed. Without waiting for another word, she raised her dagger and sliced the tip of her index finger. Dark, thick blood welled up instantly, glowing with a faint, iridescent essence that hummed with latent cultivation power. She stepped forward, her movement fluid despite her exhaustion, and pressed her blood-slicked finger hard against David's forehead. "I, Linnea of the Vance Clan, swear the blood oath," she whispered, her voice carrying an ancient, resonant weight. Instantly, fire exploded behind David's eyes. `[Dynasty Blood Oath accepted. High-affinity partner: Linnea Vance.]` `[Affinities matching... 99% compatibility confirmed.]` `[Commencing gene-rate reconstruction. Warning: High-intensity physical remodeling in progress.]` White-hot agony ripped through David’s chest, causing him to choke on his own breath as he fell to his knees. His hands slammed into the cracked concrete, his bones vibrating at a terrifying, bone-snapping frequency. Every single muscle fiber in his arms and legs tore apart, only to be instantly woven back together with thick, gold-infused threads of raw genetic energy. Blood dripped from his nose, but his heart beat with the force of a thundering war drum as the trash-tier barriers within his DNA shattered. `[Gene-rate: 9%... 14%... 19%... 25%!]` `[Physical strength increased by 300%. Reflexes increased by 250%. Martial path unlocked.]` Pain morphed into a soaring, intoxicating rush of absolute power. He stood up slowly, the wet ground cracking beneath his boots as his newly dense muscular structure settled. His vision, previously blurry in the dim light, was now incredibly sharp; he could see the individual raindrops frozen in mid-air and the dust motes dancing in the yellow glare of the approaching spotlight. "Target identified! Drop your weapons!" an enforcer roared, stepping into the alley with an automatic rifle aimed at David's chest. Heavy metal plating of the exo-suit hissed as the soldier took a step forward, ready to fire. David didn't hesitate. Moving with a speed he had never imagined possible, he lunged forward, leaving a faint blur in the damp air. He closed the ten-meter distance in a fraction of a second, his fist driving straight into the center of the enforcer's chest plate. Metal buckled and shattered under the impact of his 25% gene-rate strength, the shockwave blowing the rain away in a perfect circle. The enforcer flew backward out of the alley, crashing into the side of a transport vehicle with a sickening crunch. "Unbelievable," Linnea gasped, her eyes wide as she watched the heavy exo-suit soldier lie motionless on the street. "More are coming," David said, his voice deep and vibrating with his new power. "Grab on." Before she could protest, he scooped her up with one arm, marveling at how light she felt now. He turned toward the solid brick wall of the warehouse that blocked the end of the alley and braced his body. Raw energy flooded his legs, and he threw himself shoulder-first into the wall. Bricks exploded outward in a cloud of dust and debris as they burst through the wall, entering the dark interior of the building. Alarms blared in the distance, but David was already moving, his enhanced legs carrying them through the shadows of the warehouse. He leaped over rusted machinery, shattered windows, and old pipes with effortless grace. Within minutes, they had slipped into the labyrinthine sewer system of Sector 4, where the Coalition's electronic tracking would be useless. They ran through the damp, echoing tunnels until they reached a heavy iron hatch. David pulled the hatch open, guiding Linnea up into a dusty, forgotten maintenance room he had prepared as a makeshift safehouse. He closed the heavy iron door behind them, sliding the thick steel bolt into place with a heavy clang. Silence fell over the room, broken only by the sound of their heavy breathing. As they catch their breath in a safehouse, Linnea drops her blade and whispers, 'The contract is signed, but if you touch me before I deem you worthy, I will carve that system out of your skull.'
