Chapter 19: Moved, Yet Merciless
950 words
Chaos exploded. Screams echoed off the crystal chandeliers as the single gunshot ripped through the opulent ballroom. Panic was a tidal wave, sending guests scrambling for cover. But in the eye of the storm, Scarlett was eerily still.
Christian Ethan’s dead weight was heavy in her arms. The warmth of his blood soaked through the silk of her gown, a stark, visceral stain against the pristine white. His face, usually a mask of arrogant control, was pale and twisted in pain. His breath came in ragged, shallow gasps.
A flicker of something ancient and unwelcome stirred in her chest. A ghost of the girl she used to be, the one who would have wept, who would have screamed his name. For one treacherous second, her heart ached. This ruthless Alpha, this billionaire titan, had thrown his body in front of hers. He had taken a bullet meant for her.
Then, her gaze dropped. His phone, clutched in her hand, was still lit. The message glowed with venom, a digital snake striking at her soul.
Chloe: *Is the bitch dead yet?*
The betrayal was a splash of ice water, extinguishing the fledgling warmth in an instant. The flicker of compassion died, replaced by a glacial fury. Chloe. Of course. And Christian… for all his last-minute warnings, he had kept this viper close. His weakness had almost gotten her killed.
His eyes fluttered open, desperately searching for hers. “Scarlett…” he rasped, a trickle of blood at the corner of his mouth. “You’re… safe.”
She said nothing. Her expression, which had softened in shock, hardened into a flawless mask of indifference. She looked down at him not with the concern of a wife, but with the cool, detached assessment of a queen observing a fallen pawn. He had made a strategic sacrifice. Nothing more.
This was karma, in its purest, most brutal form. For three years, she had been invisible to him. For three years, her pleas, her pain, her very existence had been met with a wall of silence. Now, he lay bleeding at her feet, begging for a crumb of attention with his eyes.
He would receive none.
“Somebody help! The CEO is shot!” a security guard finally yelled, breaking through the pandemonium.
Boots thundered across the marble floor. Paramedics rushed in, their faces grim. They knelt beside her, their hands hovering, waiting for her to move.
“Ma’am, we need to get him,” one of them said gently.
Scarlett released him without a word, letting his head loll back onto the cold floor. She rose to her feet in a single, fluid motion, the blood-soaked gown clinging to her legs. She looked at her hands, stained crimson with the blood of the man who was still her husband. With deliberate, almost theatrical slowness, she picked up a pristine white napkin from a nearby table and wiped the blood away, her face a study in chilling composure.
Across the room, she saw her. Chloe Vance. Her face was a mask of horror and disbelief, her skin the color of ash. She wasn't looking at Christian bleeding on the floor. She was staring at Scarlett. At the phone still in Scarlett’s hand. Their eyes locked across the terrified crowd, a silent battlefield declared in a single, loaded glance.
Scarlett allowed a slow, predatory smile to touch her lips. It didn't reach her eyes. Her eyes promised a reckoning. Chloe flinched as if struck, a wave of pure terror washing over her features as she realized her catastrophic miscalculation.
The paramedics had Christian on a stretcher now, an oxygen mask over his face. As they wheeled him past, his hand shot out, his fingers surprisingly strong as they clamped around her wrist. It was the desperate grip of a drowning man.
“Don’t… go,” he pleaded, his voice muffled by the mask. The mighty Christian Ethan, the billionaire who commanded boardrooms and brought rivals to their knees, was begging.
Scarlett leaned down, her lips close to his ear, her voice a silken whisper meant only for him. “You bled for me. A noble gesture.” She paused, letting the words hang in the air. “But three years of humiliation cannot be erased by one bullet. Your regret is only just beginning, Christian.”
She met his wide, pleading eyes. She felt the desperate squeeze of his fingers, a silent testament to his newfound fear of losing her. With methodical precision, she pried his fingers off her wrist, one by one. She straightened up, turning her back on the stretcher, on the man, on the entire pathetic display of delayed affection.
She didn't look back as they rushed him out of the ballroom.
An impeccably dressed man who looked like just another panicked guest materialized at her side. It was Silas, her head of security, her most trusted shadow. “Rosewood?” he murmured, his eyes scanning the room, assessing every threat.
Scarlett stared at her own reflection in a dark pane of glass, her expression utterly merciless. The meek, submissive girl was gone forever. In her place stood an empress forged in betrayal and tempered by a thirst for vengeance.
“Chloe Vance tried to have me killed,” she said, her voice as cold and sharp as a diamond shard. “Activate the plan. I want her to wake up tomorrow owning nothing but the designer clothes on her back.”
Silas nodded. “And the shooter?”
Scarlett’s gaze drifted to the shattered window the assassin had escaped through. A chilling smile graced her lips.
“The police can have what’s left of him,” she declared. “But first, I want to know who he works for. Christian thought this was just about his company. He has no idea the real war has just begun.”
