Chapter 35: The Digital Trail

A cold shiver traced Elara's spine, despite the warmth of the office. Her gaze kept snagging on Asher. He was leaning over the main monitor, his jaw tight. This wasn't just about Lily anymore. Not for her.
Swallowing hard, she forced herself to focus. "Alright. Where do we start with Evelyn's company?" Her voice was surprisingly steady.
Asher pointed to the screen. "Their public records are clean. Too clean. We need to go deeper. Access their internal network, if possible."
She nodded, pulling up her own laptop. "I have a few backdoors I've kept... updated." A wry twist touched her lips. "From my less lawful days."
His eyes met hers, a flicker of something unreadable there. "Good. We're on the same side now."
That 'now' hung in the air, thick with unspoken history and unnerving present. She averted her gaze, fingers flying across her keyboard. This was safer. The cold logic of code.
Hours bled into each other. Coffee cups piled up, the aroma growing stale. Asher worked beside her, a silent, formidable presence. His focus was absolute.
Accessing the perimeter systems of 'Evergreen Solutions' was a challenge. Evelyn had invested heavily in security. But Elara was better. Or at least, more desperate.
Finally, a small breach. "Got it," she murmured, a jolt of adrenaline hitting her. "I'm in their secondary server farm. Lots of archived data."
Asher leaned closer, his shoulder brushing hers. A spark. She ignored it, her eyes locked on the screen. "Search for anything out of the ordinary. Large, unscheduled transfers. Communications with external, unlisted IPs."
Scrolling through endless lines of data felt like sifting sand for gold. Most of it was legitimate business. Quarterly reports, client communications, marketing strategies.
Then, a peculiar folder. Named 'Project Chimera'. It was encrypted, layered with multiple firewalls.
"This is it," Asher said, his voice low. His finger tapped the screen. "Why would they hide a project name like that?"
Elara felt her pulse quicken. This wasn't just data manipulation; it screamed something more sinister. Her fingers flew, decrypting the layers one by one. The code was complex, but flawed.
Bit by bit, the contents revealed themselves. Not a project. A database. A vast, intricate web of patient records. But not just records. Modified records.
"Look at this," she whispered, pointing. "These patient files... they've been altered. Symptoms exaggerated, diagnoses changed. All pointing to a specific, severe prognosis."
Asher's eyes narrowed. "They're manipulating health data. Why?"
"Insurance fraud, maybe?" Elara suggested. "Or something worse. These aren't random patients. They seem to be from a specific network of clinics."
Her heart hammered. A chilling thought surfaced. "Lily's clinic."
They cross-referenced the altered records with the list of clinics associated with 'Evergreen Solutions'. Sure enough, Lily's original pediatric oncology clinic was on the list.
"This is huge," Asher stated, his voice tight with controlled fury. His knuckles were white where he gripped the edge of the desk.
"It gets worse," Elara said, her gaze fixed on a sub-folder within 'Project Chimera'. 'Subject 734-L'. Lily.
Inside, a series of encrypted communications. Not between Evelyn's company and the clinic, but between Evelyn herself and a private email address.
"I'm going to try to decrypt these," Elara announced, her voice strained. The air in the room felt heavy, suffocating. Every click, every line of code felt like a step deeper into a dark abyss.
Minutes stretched into an eternity. Sweat beaded on her forehead. The encryption was sophisticated. But not impenetrable.
Finally, a breakthrough. The first email popped open. It wasn't a casual message. It was a veiled threat.
Subject: Re: Our mutual understanding.
Sender: Evelyn Thorne
Recipient: Dr. Julian Thorne (No relation listed, but the name... Thorne again.)
"Julian Thorne," Asher breathed. "Lily's original doctor. The one who signed off on the initial diagnosis and recommended the experimental treatment."
Elara's fingers trembled as she scrolled through the email chain. Evelyn was coercing Dr. Thorne. Threatening to expose irregularities in his own research, fabricating patient outcomes from his past.
"She was blackmailing him," Elara murmured, the pieces clicking into place with a horrifying clarity. "Forcing him to confirm the aggressive diagnosis, pushing for that experimental trial."
"To get Lily into the trial," Asher finished, his voice a low growl. "To use her." His fist slammed against the desk, a dull thud echoing in the quiet room.
His anger was a palpable force. It vibrated through the air, stirring a similar rage within Elara. Not just for Lily, but for the sheer audacity of it all. The callous manipulation.
"There's more," she said, her voice sharp with renewed focus. "Financial records linked to these communications. Payments."
They followed the digital breadcrumbs. A series of irregular wire transfers, small amounts at first, then larger sums, paid out from a shell corporation controlled by 'Evergreen Solutions'.
"This isn't just blackmail for services," Asher observed. "This looks like a sustained payout. A retainer for silence."
"Or for ongoing compliance," Elara added, navigating deeper into the financial labyrinth. The numbers blurred, but a pattern emerged. Regular payments. Always to the same account.
Her fingers flew, pulling up the details of the latest transfer. An overseas transaction, routed through several offshore banks.
"Here," she announced, her voice tight with anticipation. A full transaction log appeared. Date, amount, routing numbers, and a recipient account.
But the recipient's name was a string of characters. Encrypted.
Asher leaned over, his breath warm on her neck. "Can you decrypt it?"
She tried. She ran her most advanced algorithms. She threw every decryption method she knew at it. The system resisted.
"It's... different," she admitted, frustration gnawing at her. "Not the standard encryption Evelyn used elsewhere. This looks like a custom-built cipher. Very robust."
Her brow furrowed, a sense of dread creeping in. This wasn't just Evelyn's work. Someone else was involved. Someone with serious resources.
"A dead end?" Asher asked, his voice rough with disappointment. The air went out of the room.
Elara stared at the jumbled characters on the screen. The name that held the key. The name that would lead them to the mastermind.
"For now," she conceded, the word a bitter taste on her tongue. Her stomach churned. So close. So maddeningly close. But this wasn't over. Not by a long shot.
Her gaze drifted to Asher. His face was a mask of grim determination. He wasn't giving up. And neither was she. The complex knot of her feelings for him tightened, an unwelcome anchor in the storm.
This quest for justice, this hunt for truth, had irrevocably bound them. And for the first time, Elara wasn't sure if she wanted to break free.
