Chapter 31: Evelyn's Retaliation
907 words
A metallic taste coated Elara's tongue. Her heart hammered against her ribs, echoing the frantic rhythm of the city outside. Asher's arm remained a steel band around her, a silent anchor in the whirlwind of their escape.
Lily was safe. That was the only thought that mattered.
She leaned into Asher, drawing strength from his unwavering presence. His scent—a mix of expensive cologne and something uniquely his, like fresh rain on dark earth—filled her senses, grounding her.
Asher’s phone buzzed incessantly in his pocket. He ignored it for a moment, his gaze fixed on the bustling street below their secured apartment.
Finally, with a sigh that seemed to carry the weight of the world, he pulled it out. His thumb scrolled through the notifications, his jaw tightening with each new alert.
His eyes, usually a calm, deep obsidian, now sparked with controlled fury.
“She didn’t waste any time,” he murmured, his voice rough.
Elara watched his face, her own stomach clenching. She knew who ‘she’ was.
Evelyn.
“What happened?” Elara asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Asher turned the phone to show her. A headline blared from a prominent news site: ‘RENOWNED SURGEON ASHER REID ACCUSED OF GROSS MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE AND FRAUD: FAMILY CLAIMS KIDNAPPING OF MINOR PATIENT.’
Her breath caught in her throat. Kidnapping? Evelyn was truly deranged.
Scrolling further, Asher showed her a video clip. Evelyn, impeccably dressed and perfectly coiffed, stood before a phalanx of reporters.
Her eyes, usually cold, were now brimming with what looked like genuine tears.
“My sister, Lily, a vulnerable minor, was under Dr. Reid’s care,” Evelyn’s voice, amplified by microphones, filled the room. “He promised us the best, promised a swift recovery. Instead, he subjected her to experimental, unauthorized procedures.”
Elara gasped. Lies. All of it.
“Yesterday,” Evelyn continued, her voice trembling just enough for dramatic effect, “Dr. Reid, with the assistance of his… associate, Elara Hayes, forcibly removed Lily from the hospital. Without proper discharge, without my consent, her legal guardian.”
Asher’s knuckles whitened around his phone. A muscle twitched in his jaw. “She’s calling it kidnapping,” he ground out.
“This isn’t just medical malpractice; it’s an abduction,” Evelyn declared, her voice rising in outrage. “We fear for Lily’s safety. We don’t know where she is, or what Dr. Reid intends to do.”
Reporters shouted questions, a chaotic chorus of accusations.
“Dr. Reid’s entire medical practice, his research, his company—Reid Medical—is built on a foundation of lies and manipulation,” Evelyn announced, ignoring the clamor. “I call for a full investigation, and for his immediate suspension.”
As the clip ended, Asher pulled up a stock market app. The vibrant green of Reid Medical’s stock had cratered, a stark, angry red bleeding across the screen.
Millions, perhaps billions, wiped out in minutes.
“She’s systematically dismantling everything I’ve built,” Asher stated, his voice flat with disbelief and rage.
Elara wrapped her arms around herself, a sudden chill running down her spine. Evelyn wasn't just angry; she was weaponized.
“This is insane, Asher. She’s destroying your reputation, your company…” Elara trailed off, her mind reeling.
“This goes beyond reputation, Elara,” Asher said, looking at the plummeting stock. “This is a direct attack on our ability to protect Lily. If Reid Medical collapses, I lose a lot of my influence, my resources.”
He paced the opulent living room, his movements restless and sharp. Every step radiated a frustrated energy.
“We knew she’d retaliate,” Elara reminded him, trying to keep her own fear in check. “But not like this. Not so… public.”
“Publicity is her weapon,” Asher countered. “She knows the media thrives on scandal, especially when it involves a prominent figure like me. She’s twisting the narrative, making us out to be the villains.”
He stopped, turning to face Elara, his intense gaze pinning her in place.
“Lily is still safe, that’s the priority,” he said, reaffirming their core mission. “But Evelyn’s endgame isn’t just to get Lily back. She wants to ruin me. To make sure I can never interfere with her plans again.”
His fists clenched and unclenched at his sides. The sheer audacity of Evelyn’s lies was staggering.
“And the part about me?” Elara asked, her voice tight. “An ‘associate’? She’s implicating me too.”
Asher nodded, his expression grim. “She’s making it clear you’re involved. A co-conspirator in her fabricated kidnapping narrative.”
Fear, cold and sharp, pierced through Elara. She wasn’t a doctor, wasn’t a public figure. How would this impact her? Her job, her life?
“This isn’t just about Lily anymore, is it?” she whispered, the full weight of the situation crushing her.
“No,” Asher confirmed. “This is about everything. My career, my company, your reputation… and the future of every patient I’ve ever tried to help. She’s attacking the very foundation of my work.”
He ran a hand through his dark hair, frustration etched deep on his features. “The board will be calling. Investors will be panicking. This is a full-scale assault.”
His phone vibrated again, a call from his legal team. He dismissed it, needing to process the immediate threat first.
Looking at Elara, his dark eyes held a dangerous glint. “She’s playing dirty. We need irrefutable proof, and fast.”
