Chapter 23: Risky Alliance
907 words
Frustration burned a hollow ache in Elara's chest. Asher’s dismissal, his coldness, left her reeling. Lily’s safety was paramount, far outweighing any contractual obligation or threat of his ire.
Ignoring his warning felt like a necessary rebellion.
She needed answers. Asher wouldn't give them. That meant she had to find them herself.
Remembering a name, a ghost from a past life, a flicker of hope ignited. Elias Thorne. He wasn't just a contact; he was an old friend, a former colleague from her investigative journalism days.
Carefully, Elara retrieved her old burner phone, a relic she'd kept hidden, powered down for years. It felt heavy in her hand, a link to a world she'd deliberately abandoned.
Thumb hovering over the power button, a wave of apprehension washed over her. Calling Elias, meeting him, risked everything. Her contract marriage, her carefully constructed facade – all could crumble.
But Lily. The thought of Lily, alone and vulnerable, pushed her forward. Some risks were worth taking.
Pressing the button, the familiar startup chime was a jarring sound in the quiet mansion. Her fingers flew across the worn keypad, dialing a number etched into her memory.
One ring. Two. Three. Her heart hammered against her ribs.
“Thorne,” a gruff voice answered, laced with a familiar weariness.
“Elias? It’s Elara Vance.” Her voice was barely a whisper, a stark contrast to the confident reporter she once was.
Silence stretched, heavy and profound.
“Elara? Is that really you?” His voice softened, tinged with disbelief. “Where have you been? We thought you… disappeared.”
“It’s a long story,” she said, forcing lightness into her tone. “I need a favor. Something big.”
He hesitated. “I’m not in that game anymore, Elara. Not like before.”
“Please,” she pleaded, her voice cracking. “It’s urgent. Lives are at stake. A child’s life.”
The line went quiet again, but this time, she felt a shift. Elias, despite his protests, had always possessed a strong moral compass. A child in danger would resonate.
“Alright,” he finally said, resignation in his tone. “Same place. Midnight. Don’t be late.”
The old warehouse district, abandoned and forgotten, was their usual rendezvous. A place where shadows swallowed secrets whole.
Hours later, dressed in nondescript dark clothing, Elara slipped out of the mansion. The night air was cool, a stark contrast to the fiery anxiety churning within her.
Every rustle of leaves, every distant car horn, made her jump. Paranoia was a cold hand gripping her throat.
Reaching the designated alley, the familiar scent of damp concrete and decay filled her nostrils. A lone figure stood silhouetted against the broken moonlight, leaning against a graffiti-scarred wall.
“Elias,” she breathed, relief washing over her.
He turned, his face etched with worry lines she didn’t remember. His once bright eyes seemed dimmer, burdened by unseen weight.
“Elara. You look… different.” His gaze swept over her, taking in the expensive, yet deliberately plain, clothes she wore. He noticed the subtle changes, the guardedness in her posture.
“So do you,” she replied, a faint smile touching her lips. “Life… changes us.”
“What’s so important you risked contacting me? You vanished, Elara. Completely.” His tone held a hint of accusation.
“I know. I’m sorry,” she said, sincerity in her voice. “But I wouldn’t be here if it wasn't critical.”
Her voice dropped to a whisper. “I need information about Veridian Labs. And a Dr. Reed.”
Elias’s eyes narrowed. He pushed off the wall, moving closer. “Veridian Labs? That’s… big. And Dr. Reed… I’ve heard whispers.”
“Whispers about what?” she pressed, desperation clawing at her.
He glanced around, his movements fluid, practiced. “Not here. This isn’t the place for specifics.”
“Then tell me what you can,” she insisted. “Anything. Is it dangerous?”
“Dangerous isn't the word, Elara. It’s insidious.” His voice was low, grave. “Veridian Labs has its fingers in a lot of pies, and not all of them are baked legally.”
“I need to know about Dr. Reed. He was working on a project, something about children’s health, at the same hospital where Lily, my… where a child I care about, was treated.”
Elias ran a hand through his thinning hair. “Dr. Reed… he’s a ghost. Appeared on the scene, made a splash with some groundbreaking research, then vanished into Veridian’s black box. People who dig too deep into him tend to disappear too.”
A cold dread settled in Elara’s stomach. “What kind of groundbreaking research?”
“That’s the mystery. The official reports are vague, sterile. But the unofficial chatter… it’s unsettling. They call it the ‘Project Chimera’ among certain circles.” His gaze met hers, solemn.
“Project Chimera? What does that even mean?” Elara’s mind raced, trying to connect the dots to Lily, to her strange medical condition.
He shook his head slowly. “Details are scarce. Just hints. But I’ve been quietly following some leads on my own, after I heard you were back in the city, even if I couldn’t find you.”
“You were looking for me?” Her heart gave a painful lurch.
“Always. You don’t just let a talent like yours vanish without a trace.” A faint, sad smile touched his lips. “And I always knew you’d find your way back to the truth, one way or another.”
“So what have you found?” she urged, her voice tight with urgency.
His eyes scanned the shadows one last time. “The whispers speak of a shadow operation, Ms. Vance. And it involves more than just money.”
