Heart of Glass

The colossal head, sheathed in polished, black glass, lunged. Tashna pushed Rhovgar back instinctively, but he was faster, a blur of motion, leaping forward with a roar that met the Wyrm’s guttural challenge. His body, now shimmering with the raw energy of their fused bloodlines, struck the beast’s jaw with the force of a battering ram. The impact echoed, a deafening crack that reverberated through the very bedrock. The Wyrm recoiled, its molten emerald eyes blinking in surprise, but the momentary advantage was fleeting.
Its serpentine neck whipped forward with terrifying speed, a massive maw lined with vitreous volcanic shards opening impossibly wide. Rhovgar, mid-air, was caught. Tashna’s cry of alarm was choked off as the creature’s jaws clamped shut around him, a grotesque, grinding sound that spoke of crushing bone and tearing flesh. The Wyrm swallowed, its scaled throat rippling as the last living dragon shifter disappeared into its depths. Tashna stood frozen, the silence that followed more deafening than the roar.
*He’s gone.* The thought was a shard of ice in her chest, chilling the very heat of her blood. Her knees threatened to buckle. This was it. The nightmare. The moment she’d always feared, when her weakness, her hesitation, claimed what little she had left.
Then, Drevok’s cruel laughter echoed, not from the cavern, but from the air itself. A projection rune, mounted high on the basalt wall, flared to life, showing his smug, triumphant face. “Well, well, Ash-Bringer,” his voice boomed, distorted by the static of the broadcast. “Looks like your pet lizard found a new home. A fitting end for a traitor and her whore-mate.”
His words, meant to shatter her, instead ignited a spark. The ice in her chest melted, replaced by a searing inferno. Rhovgar, swallowed. Jelam, threatened. Drevok, laughing. Her shyness, her meekness, her lifelong habit of shrinking from conflict – they weren't just gone, they were incinerated. Ash. Nothing but ash.
She lifted her head, her eyes fixed on the massive, undulating body of the Obsidian Wyrm. *He’s not gone. Not until I say so.* She would not be Tashna, the timid outcast, any longer. She was the pit's rage, the mountain's fury. She was the forge.
Her hands slammed together, palm to palm, and she pulled them apart slowly. Between them, the very air shimmered, not with heat, but with solidifying force. Red-black essence, drawn from her awakened bloodline, streamed from her fingertips, swirling, condensing, hardening. A guttural growl ripped from her throat, a sound raw and untamed. The vitrified floor beneath her feet began to glow, then buckle, its surface rippling as if in a terrible fever.
She refused to shrink back. She refused to yield. Her will was absolute. With a final, agonizing surge of power, she ripped her hands apart, and a massive, gleaming blade of solidified magma, jagged and still smoking, materialized between them. It pulsed with the mountain's core tremor, radiating an intense, searing heat that distorted the air. This was no mere weapon; it was an extension of her very being.
The glassy Wyrm, having absorbed its prey, turned its dark head, its molten eyes fixing on the small, defiant figure before it. It roared again, a sound of smug dominance, and began to coil, preparing to strike. Tashna met its gaze, her face set, utterly devoid of fear. She did not wait. She ran.
Leaping with impossible speed, fueled by adrenaline and a primal fury, she launched herself directly towards the Wyrm's gaping maw, which opened in a fresh roar of contempt. She plunged into the beast’s throat, a searing spear of pure resolve. Inside, the heat was suffocating, a furnace of churning digestive fluids and crushing muscle. She ignored the burn. She drove the blazing blade, a meteor of pure, refined rage, deep into the creature’s internal heat-sac, the throbbing core of its elemental power.
The Wyrm thrashed, a seismic convulsion that ripped through the very mountain. A scream, not of agony but of pure, shattered defiance, tore from its depths. Cracks spiderwebbed across its glass scales, fissures glowing with internal, catastrophic energy. It exploded. A blinding flash of light, followed by a shower of vitrified shrapnel that rained down like deadly, black hail. The cavern roared, the air filled with the scent of ozone, pulverised rock, and something else – victory.
From the chaotic maelstrom of glass shards and dissipating smoke, a figure emerged, soot-covered but undeniably alive. Rhovgar. His eyes, usually fierce, now held a wild, relief-filled light. He found her, standing amidst the rubble, her magma blade dissolving back into raw energy. He strode towards her, his movements powerful, primal. She met him halfway.
Words failed him; silence took over. He crushed her against him, a desperate embrace that stole the breath from her lungs. His lips, rough and demanding, descended upon hers, a kiss that was neither gentle nor tentative. It was a claiming, a fervent promise, a locking of fated destinies. Her blood surged, answering his, a final, undeniable fusion that resonated through every fiber of her being.
As the last echoes of the explosion faded, a single, glowing object clattered to the ground where the Wyrm's head had been. A control key, pulsing with intricate runes. Tashna bent, picking it up, its warmth a promise in her hand. This was it. The path to the Core Vent, to Jelam, to their freedom.
But before she could fully comprehend the victory, the very air distorted. A projection rune, mounted higher on the cavern wall, flickered. This wasn't Drevok. This was a new feed, an unfamiliar segment of the caldera. And on it, battered and bleeding, surrounded by jagged rocks and a swirling dust storm, was Jelam. He wasn't in the Kholvas Pack anymore. Drevok had thrown him into the proving ground's outer ring.
