Tassio stared at Vellera, her face pale beneath the dust, then at Jorlan, frozen mid-gasp as another shudder ripped through the Spire. The ceiling groaned, the sound like a titan’s dying breath, and a cascade of smaller debris, jagged shards of plasteel and twisted conduits, began to rain down.
His budding army, the cyber-spiders still clinging to the ruined walls, the Death Knight standing sentinel, represented his only path to quiet, uninterrupted slumber. His future. To let them be crushed… it was a setback he could ill afford. Yet, the image of Vellera’s determined face, the unexpected warmth of her body against his just moments ago, felt too real to ignore.
He closed his eyes. "Mortis-Engine," he muttered, his voice hoarse, "Prioritize organic life preservation. Deploy localized kinetic barrier. Target: immediate vicinity. Max output." It was a gamble. He had no idea how much strain this would put on the already taxed system, or himself.
[Warning: Insufficient power for dual-protocol execution. Army Reinforcement Protocol will be terminated. Proceed?]
"Proceed!" Tassio snapped, the word tearing from his throat, a raw sound of exertion he hadn't made in centuries. Pressure mounted behind his temples, an exhausting draft pulling hoarded reserves straight out of his marrow.
[Executing. Kinetic Barrier Protocol engaged. Army Reinforcement Protocol Terminated. Deconstruction of active units initiated to supplement barrier]
Chills sank through Tassio, radiating outward from his sternum. His tether to the spider-swarm severed node by node, their constructs dissolving into raw energy shunted straight into the emerging dome. The Death Knight, its singular optic still glowing, shuddered, its limbs locking. Its form began to pixelate, then collapse into a pile of rusted components and crackling wires. The sacrifice was complete.
A transparent, shimmering dome of cerulean light flared into existence, encompassing Tassio, Vellera, and Jorlan. It pulsed with a low hum, expanding just enough to brace against the falling wreckage. A massive slab of concrete, wider than a transport skiff, smashed against the warding field, fragmenting into gravel that cascaded down the curved plane. The Spire of Ghol continued its cacophonous descent, but inside the aegis, the air was still, save for the hum of the field and Tassio's ragged breaths.
Vellera stared at the dissolving frames of the cyber-spiders, then up at the humming shield, and finally at Tassio. He was slumped, one hand pressed to his temple, his face pale and slick with a fine sheen of sweat. He looked utterly spent, his usual languid grace replaced by a visible tremor in his hands. The effortless genius she knew, the one who casually commanded monsters, was gone, replaced by someone vulnerable, strained. A fierce, unfamiliar protectiveness flared within her, surprising her with its intensity.
Jorlan, meanwhile, clapped Tassio on the shoulder, a wide, relieved grin on his face. "That was a close one, Tassio! Good thinking!" His voice was light, almost too cheerful for the recent near-death experience.
Tassio merely grunted, the effort of speaking too much. The blue field wavered once, then dissolved, leaving them exposed to the cool, dusty air of the ruined chamber. The immediate collapse had passed, but the Spire continued to settle with groans and creaks.
"Can… can we just find a bed?" Tassio mumbled, pushing himself upright with visible effort. His knees felt like water, his head throbbed. He just wanted to sleep, for an eternity. The thought of building another army from scratch was, frankly, infuriating.
Vellera was already on her feet. "We need to move. This entire sector is compromised. The upper levels are blown open now, leaving a direct route for more of those things." She glanced at Tassio, then to Jorlan. "Can you walk?"
"Give me a moment," Tassio said, leaning against a crumbling pillar. He pushed off, forcing a semblance of his usual, unconcerned stride, though Vellera noticed the subtle drag in his left foot. "Lead the way, commander. Just… try to find somewhere quiet. And soft."
They picked their way through the pulverized chamber floor, wading across a carpet of bent girders and cracked resin. The breach in the ceiling showed a sliver of Kravos's perpetually twilight sky, choked with smoke plumes from distant burning districts. What had once been towering glass spires were now skeletal husks, their reflective panes shattered like broken mirrors beneath a dying sun. Demonic flesh, like creeping fungal growths, had begun to fuse with the rusted skeletons of abandoned sky-trains and utility gantries, creating grotesque, living bridges between the ruined buildings.
"The nearest functional shelter would be the old Sector Gamma Data-Hub," Jorlan offered, pointing towards a cluster of less damaged, though still scarred, structures in the middle distance. "It's heavily shielded, used to store all the planetary archives. Might have a secure sub-level."
Tassio, despite his exhaustion, felt a spark of interest. Planetary archives. If his memories predated the collapse, records might decipher his forgotten identity—or point him toward a functional cryo-pod.
They navigated the perilous landscape, stepping over the desiccated husks of lesser techno-organic demons and avoiding the larger, still-pulsing masses of corrupted bio-mass. The air grew colder, the wind whistling through the shattered city like a lament. Vellera kept her hand near the hilt of her vibro-blade, her eyes constantly scanning for movement in the shadowed alleys between the crumbling towers.
After what felt like an endless trek, they reached the Data-Hub. It was a squat, formidable structure, mostly intact save for several deep gouges that looked like claw marks from a giant. The main entrance was buried under a mountain of rubble, but Jorlan quickly located a smaller, reinforced service hatch, partially obscured by a fallen comm-relay.
"Here we go!" Jorlan said, reaching for the latch. As his fingers brushed the corroded hatch plate, a high-pitched whine shrilled from the panel, followed by rapid, rhythmic beeps that cut the silence. A soft, crimson light pulsed around the hatch.
[Proximity Alert: Unauthorized Access Detected. Initiating Local Defense Protocol. Dispatching Security Response.]
Jorlan recoiled, his face a mask of feigned surprise. "Whoops! Guess it's still active. My bad."
Tassio shot him a glare. "'My bad'? That just means we have company incoming. Vellera, get ready."
Even as he spoke, skittering sounds echoed from the labyrinthine corridors outside. Three hulking beasts, hybrids of corrupted plating and segmented chitin, rounded a nearby corner. Their heads were rudimentary, bearing single, glowing crimson optics, and from their mouths, tendrils of black ichor dripped onto the broken pavement.
"Get the hatch open!" Vellera ordered, freeing her vibro-blade with a practiced flick. The blade hummed to life, a faint blue glow emanating from its edge. She braced herself, her stance wide, ready to meet the charge.
"I'm working on it!" Tassio snapped, already pulling out a small, multi-tool from his pocket – a relic from his ‘simulation’ days. He jammed a data-spike into a hidden maintenance port, fingers skimming across the blue holographic interface. His skull still throbbed, but Vellera standing alone against the abominations spurred his hands faster.
[Security Bypass Protocol Initiated. Firewall detected. Analyzing…]
"How long, Tassio?" Vellera grunted, deflecting a sweeping claw from the front beast. The impact sent a jarring vibration up her arm, but she held her ground, her blade singing as it carved a deep gouge into the demon’s shoulder plating.
"A few moments!" He bit back, furiously overriding security subroutines. The installation was centuries old, its firewalls designed against planetary cataclysms rather than simple bypass spikes.
Jorlan, meanwhile, unholstered a compact slug-thrower, peppering the targets with bursts that drew their attention without piercing their armor plates.
[Firewall breached. Accessing primary control sub-routines. Initiating hatch release…]
A loud *thunk* echoed as the hatch mechanism disengaged. Tassio pulled it open just as Vellera, with a ferocious roar, sliced through the leg joint of the lead demon, sending it toppling to the ground in a spray of black fluids. "Inside!" she yelled, covering their retreat. Tassio grabbed her arm, pulling her through the narrow opening just as the remaining two creatures lunged.
They stumbled into a dark, cavernous space, filled with rows of deactivated data servers. Tassio quickly resealed the bulkhead, the reinforced leaf slamming shut with a heavy clang that muted the snarls outside.
"Okay," Vellera said, breathing heavily, leaning against the cool metal of the server rack. "Now what?"
Tassio moved toward a central terminal, its dark arrays humming with dormant processing power. He plugged in his diagnostic tool, feeding a signal straight into the sleeping network.
[System Initialization Protocol. Revitalizing dormant archives. Welcome, Architect.]
The console illuminated, monitors coming alive with a pale blue sweep. A holographic projector hummed to life in the center of the room, casting an ethereal, shimmering image into the air. It depicted an immense monument standing atop a stylized globe of Kravos, hands outstretched over the planet's meridian. The statue was identified by archaic script as 'The First Architect, Builder of Kravos's Last Line'. As the hologram resolved into clean vectors, the visage of the legendary builder stared back at them, serene and impossibly familiar. It was Tassio's face.
