Chapter 2 of 10
Minimal Effort

Her rifle, a high-grade Kray-series plasma cannon, dipped. Her eyes, wide and disbelieving, flickered between the colossal construct and the cadet lounging beside it. Tassio Velt, whose greatest physical feat previously involved rolling out of bed, now stood flanked by a skeletal behemoth of fused metal and bone. The K’tharr, a ravenous tide of chitin and glowing red eyes, slammed into the blast door wreckage behind her, their screeches a raw tearing sound that vibrated through the deck plates.
“Tassio!” Vellera’s voice, usually a sharp command, was a ragged gasp. Her mind, trained for combat analysis, struggled to process the impossible. The thing was a demon, wasn’t it? Another monstrous variant. Her rival, the perpetual slacker, was standing too close to it, too calm.
She snapped the rifle up, the metallic whir of its charge building. “Get away from it! Now!”
Tassio merely blinked, a slow, languid motion. “It’s fine, Vellera. Bit loud, though.” He gestured vaguely with a finger. “Bad form, rushing in like that.”
Her mouth hardened into a thin line. “Bad form? The Spire is gone! We’re under attack! That *thing* could be another demon!” The plasma cannon whined, a fierce blue-white radiance coalescing at its muzzle. Instinct, honed by years of simulated combat, urged her to eliminate the immediate danger.
“No, it’s not,” Tassio murmured, a hint of annoyance in his tone. He shifted his weight, pulling a small, rusted cog from his pocket and idly turning it between his thumb and forefinger. The act was so utterly, infuriatingly casual in the face of absolute chaos.
[Warning: Hostile Energy Signature Detected. Target Lock: Vellera Dask. Threat Assessment: Minor. Engage?]
“Hold,” Tassio said, the single syllable barely louder than a whisper. His eyes remained on the cog.
The reanimated juggernaut, which had begun to pivot its massive frame, its bone-plate armor creaking, froze instantly. Its crimson optics, previously fixed on Vellera, dimmed fractionally.
Vellera, mid-squeeze on the trigger, faltered. The plasma charge dissipated, hissing into the air. Her arm, braced for recoil, sagged. The sheer, effortless obedience of the monster, responding to Tassio’s single word, was a blow more staggering than any demon’s claw. Humiliation, hot and sudden, flushed her face, mixing with the grime and blood.

“You… you control it?” Her voice was barely a whisper now, thick with disbelief. The implications were a maelstrom in her mind. This wasn't just a demon, it was *his* demon. Tassio, the boy who napped through tactical drills, had conjured a nightmare.
Behind her, the K’tharr horde surged, a chittering, scuttling wave of techno-organic horror. They flooded through the gaping maw of the ruined blast doors, their multi-jointed legs scrabbling on the metal deck, their razor claws tearing at the air. There were dozens, then hundreds, radiating an acrid stench of burned oil and sulfur.
“Withdraw! Fall back!” Vellera roared, her tactical mind finally reasserting itself. She glanced around for a defensible position, a choke point, anything. There was none. The hall was too open, too exposed. Her rifle was useless against such numbers, even with Tassio’s pet.

Tassio, meanwhile, sighed. A long, put-upon sound. He nudged a piece of fallen debris – a twisted section of conduit and rebar – with his foot, then settled onto it with the studied air of someone preparing for an inconvenient wait. “Really? Do they *have* to make so much noise?” he complained, rubbing his temples.
Vellera stared, aghast. “Tassio! We need to move! Now! They’ll overwhelm us!”
He waved a hand dismissively. “Nah. Just watch. And try to keep it down, will you? I just got comfortable.”
The sentinel moved. It didn’t charge. It simply *stepped*, a deliberate, heavy motion that vibrated through the deck. Its right arm, the one tipped with the glowing green blade, arced in a wide, fluid sweep. The blade, crackling with barely contained plasma arc-fire, met the first wave of K’tharr. It didn’t cut them. It didn’t cleave. It simply *vaporized* them. A dozen demons, screaming their last, dissolved into clouds of steaming, black ash and crystalline dust.

The construct didn’t pause. Its left arm, a complex assembly of reanimated servitor hydraulics and demon bone, swung like a monstrous club, pulverizing another cluster of encroaching creatures. Organic and mechanical components fused and shattered, spraying viscous ichor and twisted metal across the floor. The K’tharr, driven by primal instinct, hesitated for a fraction of a second, their red eyes flickering with something akin to fear.
“Come on, you brutes,” Tassio muttered, watching the carnage with an air of detached amusement. “More speed, less… squawking.”

The lone monstrosity, Tassio’s pet, systematically, ruthlessly, began to dismantle the entire horde. It moved with a terrifying economy of motion, each strike devastating, each parry deflecting claws that could tear through ceramite. The vault, once filled with the cacophony of hundreds of demons, slowly fell silent, save for the crackle of residual discharge and the occasional wet crunch of bone. Vellera watched, transfixed, as the monstrosity carved a path of absolute annihilation, a single, unstoppable force against an entire tide. Tassio, still perched on his rubble, merely yawned.
Suddenly, a shower of dust and fragmented metal rained down from an overhead ventilation shaft. A figure dropped lightly to the deck, landing with the practiced grace of a seasoned scout. Jorlan Kryk, his familiar charismatic grin plastered on his face, wiped soot from his brow. His reconnaissance gear, usually pristine, was scuffed and torn.
“Vellera! Tassio! You’re alive!” Jorlan exclaimed, his voice ringing with false relief. He gestured back up the shaft. “Found a route. A maintenance tunnel, might lead to the lower sectors. Some cadets are already there, waiting for extraction.” He seemed not to notice the demon corpses, or the towering metal-and-bone terror, or Tassio’s languid posture. His eyes darted, assessing, calculating.
[Anomalous Abyssal Energy Signature Detected. Origin: Jorlan Kryk. Threat Assessment: Undetermined. Recommend immediate investigation.]
Tassio’s HUD, a private overlay only he could see, flashed the warning. His eyes narrowed imperceptibly. Jorlan? Abyssal resonance? Before Tassio could even begin to process this new, inconvenient data, the Spire itself began to groan.
The very metal walls of the room, thick plasteel and reinforced ferrocrete, began to distort, buckling inwards. A low, resonating hum started deep within the structure, a sound that seemed to shake the very atoms in the air. Then, the hum intensified, shifting into a guttural, gargantuan voice that echoed not just through the chamber, but through the entirety of the crumbling Spire of Ghol.
“*Ar-chi-tect…*” the voice boomed, deep and ancient, “*I have found you…*”
