Chapter 2: The Golden Beast's First Breath

1.2k words

Frost bit into Stormy’s bare chest, sharp as needles. Behind him, the high metal walls of Aegis Sector 4 finally vanished into the swirling white storm. Barefoot and bleeding, he dragged Lily through the deep snowbanks, his breath coming in ragged, desperate gasps. The sub-zero air burned his throat, and every inhalation tasted like ground glass, but the terrifying roar of the Aegis sirens in the distance kept him moving. Ice clung to his sister’s eyelashes as she stumbled beside him, her small hand shivering violently inside his grasp. "Run, Stormy," Lily whispered, her voice barely carrying over the howling wind. Stormy didn't reply, his throat too raw from the cold to form words. Every step was an exercise in pure agony, the jagged rocks beneath the snow slicing into his numb soles. Blood stained the pristine snow with every stride, leaving a trail that even a blind tracker could follow. Memories of their mother's face flashed behind his eyelids, her final promise giving him the strength to keep moving. "Keep her safe," she had whispered before the Aegis scientists dragged her away. A blue screen flickered directly in his field of vision, pulsing with an eerie, mechanical light. [WARNING: Hostiles approaching at rapid speed. Distance: 200 meters. Lethal intent detected.] Stormy shook his head, trying to blink away the glowing text. Golden scales shimmered faintly beneath his skin, still warm from the violent awakening inside the laboratory, but the freezing mountain air was quickly numbing his flesh. Another prompt flashed, brighter than the first. [SYSTEM DIRECTIVE: Eliminate pursuers to ensure high probability of survival. Failure to comply will result in severe physical danger.] "Shut up," he hissed under his breath, his teeth rattling. He didn't want to kill anyone else. Images of the guards he had destroyed in the laboratory flashed in his mind, making his stomach churn with sickening guilt. Blood had painted the sterile white floors of Sector 4, and the memory of their terrified screams echoed louder than the blizzard. He was a monster in that room, and he refused to let that beast take over again. Heavy boots crunched through the crust of the snow somewhere behind them. Barking orders echoed through the dark spruce trees, cutting through the natural silence of the blizzard. "Spread out! They couldn't have gone far on foot!" a harsh voice commanded. Ducking behind a massive, snow-laden trunk, Stormy pulled Lily close against his chest. Snow fell in heavy, blinding sheets, obscuring the path ahead but doing nothing to mask their deep footprints. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Stormy, I'm cold," Lily whimpered, her body shaking so hard her teeth clicked. "I know, Lily. Just a little further," he lied, staring out into the endless white expanse. They had no food, no shoes, and no shelter. Only the wild, unexplored frontiers of Aurora lay ahead of them, a brutal wilderness that devoured even experienced travelers. Finding a hollowed-out spruce trunk nearby, Stormy quickly ushered Lily inside. Inside the cramped shelter, the wind was slightly quieter, but the cold remained an oppressive force. Lily’s skin was turning a dangerous shade of blue, her lips pale and cracked. [WARNING: Ally physical status critical. Hypothermia progressing. Recommended action: Ignite external warmth.] Stormy stared at his hands, trying to summon the fire that had incinerated the lab. Golden sparks danced across his knuckles, but the moment they touched the cold air, they died. Primal energy roared in his veins, but it was wild, untamed, and refused to obey his gentle nature. Sound of barking hounds echoed in the distance, drawing closer with every second. They couldn't stay here. Leaving the safety of the hollow trunk, Stormy pulled Lily back into the freezing wind. Trees seemed to press in from all sides, their heavy branches drooping under the weight of the snow. [HOSTILE DETECTED within 50 meters. Prepare for engagement.] Branches snapped nearby, too close for comfort. Out of the white haze, a heavily armored mercenary emerged, his assault rifle raised and ready. Red targeting lasers swept across the snow, painting thin lines of crimson light on the white ground. Stormy stepped in front of Lily, shielding her small frame with his own body. [HOSTILE DETECTED. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Incinerate target using Dragon’s Breath.] Fire was not what Stormy wanted; it would leave nothing but ash. Clenching his fists, he focused on the freezing cold around them instead, drawing on the magic humming in his blood. Frost erupted from his palms in a sudden, violent wave. A massive spike of solid ice shot across the snow, slamming into the mercenary’s heavy boot. Screaming in surprise, the soldier was pinned instantly, his foot encased in a thick, unbreakable block of blue ice. Stormy didn't wait to see more. "Go!" he gasped, grabbing Lily’s hand and lunging back into the dense trees. But mercy came with a terrible price. Trapped in the ice, the mercenary snarled in rage and lifted his rifle with a free hand. A sharp, high-pitched crack echoed through the forest. Lily whimpered, a sudden, sharp gasp escaping her lips as she stumbled. Blood, bright and horrifyingly red, began to seep through her thin shirt at the shoulder. Guilt slammed into Stormy’s chest like a physical blow. "Lily!" he cried, dropping to his knees beside her. Her eyes were wide with pain, her face turning pale as she clutched her arm. A specialized mana-disruptor dart was embedded in her flesh, pulsing with a faint blue light that seemed to drain her energy. Angrily, Stormy ripped the dart out, throwing it into the snow where it hissed and died. He should have killed the mercenary. Failing to act was his undoing, a foolish mistake born of fear and weakness. His hesitation had almost cost his sister her life. Lifting her into his arms, he ignored the sudden, searing agony that flared in his own hands. Fire bloomed beneath his skin, localized entirely in his fingers. Pain ripped through his forearms as his fingernails lengthened, shifting into sharp, golden dragon claws. Every step felt like walking through boiling lava. Deep in his chest, a primal power demanded to be let loose, screaming for destruction. Wind howled through the trees, throwing freezing sleet against his face as he pushed forward. Behind them, the sound of more boots and the mechanical hum of tracking drones grew louder. Stopping was not an option. "I'm sorry, Lily," he whispered, tears freezing on his cheeks. "I should have stopped him. I should have been stronger." She didn't answer, her head resting heavily against his shoulder as she drifted into unconsciousness. Golden claws burned with an uncontrollable, self-destructive heat, melting the snow wherever his hands brushed. Snow sizzled against his skin, rising in tiny puffs of steam. Ahead, the dense forest suddenly gave way to a vast, open clearing. Just as they reach the edge of a frozen ravine, the snow ahead shifts, revealing a cloaked Aegis tracker holding a detonator wired to the very bridge they need to cross.
