Chapter 7 of 10
Sword Dances and Stolen Veins

“Right,” I said, rolling up Shen Zhixing’s map. “The primary vein runs under the Orthosian Monastery, a Tier 2 sanctum. It feeds a dozen lesser factions. It's also shielded by an Amulet of Dampening—a passive array that muffles most spiritual emanations, blinding long-range detection talismans.”
Shen Zhixing shifted, his gaze tracking my movements. “The dampening ward covers the subterranean threshold, not the full vein. If one were to dig around the perimeter, just past the boundary markers…” He trailed off, his eyes bright with a dangerous calculation that mirrored my own. “The monastery guards patrol in three-hour cycles. A distraction at the main gates would buy us sixty minutes, perhaps seventy-five, if it was sufficiently… engaging.”
I nodded, already picturing the terrain. The monastery was a granite bastion cut directly into Mount Zirra, its gates pinched between two precipices. “We’ll need a diversion that draws every guard away from the western perimeter. Something flamboyant. Something theatrical.” My gaze settled on Jian Wuchen, who was sharpening Glacial Whispers against a whetstone, its edges humming with a low, frosty keen.
He looked up, silver eyes meeting mine. “A display of martial prowess?” His voice was calm, but a subtle tension tightened his shoulders. He appeared bracing himself to split more ironwood cords.
“Precisely,” I confirmed. “A sword dance. Long, drawn-out. Full of dramatic flair. Think heartbroken hero, battling inner demons, the entire show. Make them *weep*.” I made a sweeping gesture with my hand, indicating the scale of performance I expected. “The objective is to mesmerize. To ensure every living soul within a league of those gates is utterly captivated.”
Jian Wuchen’s lips pressed into a thin line. He didn’t question it, only nodded once. “It shall be done.”
“Good. Shen Zhixing, you’re on subsoil excavation and hoist operation. We’re tunneling in, not battering down the threshold.” I unrolled my schematics for the brass haulers. “Morou Qiong, you’re the battery for the mobile escape platform and the pulleys. Your demonic miasma produces excellent mechanical torque, volatile as it is.”
From his corner, Morou Qiong let out a low, guttural chuckle. “So, the little wren finally admits her need for a predator’s strength.” Chains clinked faintly as he shifted. “What glorious destruction do you envision this time, Qilan?”
“Utility,” I corrected, ignoring the undertone. “And a fast escape. The moment that vein is severed, the Heavens will know. We have precious minutes before their wrath descends.”

The alpine draft outside the walls tasted of crushed needles and frost. Down in our concealed trench, Shen Zhixing wrestled with a greasy iron cog. I checked the bronze fittings piping Morou Qiong’s miasma into the hydraulic pistons. The Demonic Sovereign sat cross-legged upon the copper sled, eyes closed, black vapor curling off his shackled wrists.
“Ready?” I muttered, tightening a clamp on a pulsating pipe. The iron was already heating, a faint reddish glow visible in the dim light.
“As I’ll ever be,” Shen Zhixing grunted, spitting a mouthful of earth aside. “The access shaft is stable. Just past the ward's border stones. I’ve seen the vein. It pulses like a captured star.”
Just then, the first strains of a flute drifted over the ridge, mournful and clear, followed by the metallic *shing* of a blade being drawn. Jian Wuchen had begun.
“Now,” I snapped. “Morou Qiong, dump the reservoir.”
Pitch-black miasma flooded the conduit, scalding my leather gauntlets. The cast-iron flared dull scarlet. Morou Qiong let out a rasping bark of laughter that shook the rock strata beneath our boots, savoring the strain on the metal.
“Harder, little wren!” he called out over the hiss of venting steam. “Tear it clean out!”
The hoists screamed as the teeth engaged. Shen Zhixing hauled the directional lever, driving three-pronged augers through shale. Sweat dripped off my chin as the pressure dials pinned against their brass stoppers. Heat blistered the palms of my gloves.
Up above, Jian Wuchen’s sword dance intensified. Glacial Whispers became a blur of silver light, spinning, plunging, parrying against unseen foes. His movements were fluid, elegant, yet imbued with a desperate, aching sorrow that seemed to pour from him. He moved as if every strike was a wound, every parry a broken promise. Guards, who had initially been running towards the main gates, now stood frozen, mesmerized by the sheer, heartbreaking spectacle.
“Almost there!” Shen Zhixing yelled, his voice strained. “The main root!”
A deep, resonant *crack* echoed from the depths of the earth, splitting the ravine floor. The spiritual vein, a cord of petrified lightning as thick as a carriage, tore free from the fractured bedrock. It writhed like a captured serpent, radiating warmth and power. The perimeter amulets shattered into powdered jade under the sudden reflux.
“Cinch the cables! Lock it to the sled!” I barked, wiping grease across my brow. “Morou Qiong, maintain pressure!”
He snarled, driving another blast through the intake. Solder bubbled at the pipe seams, but the cables hauled the radiant root directly onto the reinforced carriage. Runes etched into the chassis flared white-hot as the stolen lode coupled with the drive.
“We did it,” Shen Zhixing breathed, collapsing beside the uprooted vein, smearing black sludge across his cheek. “We actually… stole it.”
“No time for celebration,” I snapped, already activating the array. “Move! Before they can react!”
The mobile array flared, lifting from the ditch. Jian Wuchen, still a silver blur in the distance, ended his dance with a final, heart-wrenching flourish, his sword embedded deep in the monastery’s stone archway. Then, kicking off the stone balustrade, he kicked across the ravine in a single, soaring trajectory.
He landed on the array platform just as it surged forward, skimming northward across the tree line. Below, brazen gongs hammered to life within the complex. But we were already miles away, a luminous streak against the twilight sky.

I ignored the voice, my gaze fixed on the horizon. The bronze tubing ticked as it cooled, reeking of charred oil and sulfur. My palms burned beneath the scorched hides.
But as we put more distance between ourselves and the enraged monastery, a chilling pressure descended from the heavens. The clouds above us, previously scattered, began to churn into an oily spiral. In the center of the swirling tempest, a single, colossal eye began to open, ancient and cold, its gaze falling directly upon me.
