Chapter 7 of 10

The Mantle Breach

1.1k words

A deafening roar of superheated water enveloped the flagship, its reinforced hull groaning under the crushing descent. Bramen shoved himself upright, bruised ribs aching against the deckplates, and scanned the rapidly darkening bridge. Tavira, already on her feet, steadied herself against a console, her sniper rifle still slung across her back, eyes narrowed at the shattered remains of Boz’s radio. The air tasted of scorched wiring and ozone. [MANTLE BREACH DETECTED. CORE TEMPERATURES: RISING. ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE: EXTREME. NEW BIOME: PYROCLASTIC ABYSS. SURVIVAL OBJECTIVES UPDATED.] “Boz!” Tavira’s voice was sharp, cutting through the shuddering metal. “Where are you?” From the ruined communication station, a whimper. Boz crawled out from under a collapsed panel, rubbing his head, looking more disheveled than usual. In his hand, fragments of what used to be his radio sparked. “I… I think I found a new frequency,” he stammered, then caught sight of the plummeting depth gauge. “Or I just broke everything.” “You wedged the core compass directly into the beast’s steering nerve, didn’t you?” Bramen pushed a strand of sweat-soaked hair from his forehead, a sardonic smirk fighting its way through his concern. “I specifically told you not to drop guidance relics into the spine of my reanimated flagship.” “It felt… right!” Boz protested, clutching his head. “Like it slipped right out of my fingers!” The descent slowed, then stabilized, the monstrous carcass vibrating with a low, bone-jarring hum. Outside, the reinforced viewports framed a churning, superheated landscape. Rivers of liquid rock flowed past, illuminating jagged pillars of basalt and veins of incandescent minerals. This was no ocean; it was the planet’s beating heart, exposed and ablaze. [PYROCLASTIC ABYSS: ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS ACTIVE. MAGMA-BASED HOSTILES DETECTED. EXTERMINATION SEQUENCE INITIATED.] Suddenly, the viewports flared. From the lava currents, grotesque forms emerged, dark and craggy as living crust. They were beasts of solid stone, their bodies radiating furnace heat, their eyes chips of polished glass. Black-rock behemoths, hundreds of them, swarmed the hull, their vitrified carapaces deflecting rounds from the dorsal auto-turrets. They clawed for purchase, incandescent talons gouging slagged furrows in the bone armor. “Standard munitions are useless,” Tavira observed, her rifle already in hand, though her target acquisition system was struggling with the heat distortion. “Their hides are too dense.” Bramen snarled. “Right. Time for some creative demolition.” He accessed the external cameras, his gaze sweeping over the encroaching horde. Through the link in his marrow, he felt his reanimated drowned crew shambling along the dorsal plates, dried flesh charring against the ambient heat. He needed a way to crack these things open. “Boz, tell me we still have some of that naval demolition ordnance from the armory,” Bramen demanded. “And any C4 charges you ‘misplaced’ into your personal stash.” Boz, surprisingly quick, fumbled through his satchel. “Uh, yeah! Mostly for emergency fishing, but… I’ve got some Mark-4 shells and a few blocks of ‘Boom-Juice’!” “Perfect.” Bramen’s voice took on a chilling calm. “Snare.” The dark patch beneath his feet rippled, then surged upward, forming the familiar, multi-limbed shape of his first companion. Snare’s glassy eyes reflected the infernal glow of the abyss. “Strap the ordnance to the deck cadres,” Bramen said over the internal comms. “One shell, two blocks of plastic explosive per corpse. Pack their ribcages if needed. Run them into the pack, then detonate on my mark.” Snare gave a silent nod, its form blurring as it zipped through the exterior airlocks, a whirlwind of deadly efficiency. Seconds later, hull cameras showed his dead crew, torsos packed with high explosives, charging the basalt pack. Skeletal silhouettes marched across the carapace, bathed in yellow radiance. The first blast tore open the trench, a clean concussive snap that shuddered through the beast’s ribs. Vitrified shards and liquid basalt sprayed wide as the front line disintegrated. Then another. And another. The deep, rumbling explosions echoed through the hull, a deadly, beautiful symphony of destruction. [IGNIS-THRALL: SELF-TERMINATION PROTOCOL EXECUTED. PYROCLASTIC HOSTILE: OBLITERATED. TIER-UP: GRANTED. NEW SKILL: 'VOLCANIC DETONATION' UNLOCKED.] The outer ring of beasts shattered, but the trench shuddered anew. A horned brute, twice the size of the pack and veined in liquid fire, crested the ridge. It trampled through the suicide squad, barreling straight toward the superstructure. With a screech of parting composite, it tore through the upper viewport housing and breached the bridge deck. Shrapnel sprayed across the bridge. The brute roared, spewing superheated slag across the consoles. It lunged, not for Bramen, but for Tavira, who had been caught off guard, trying to recalibrate her scope. She rolled clear as an armored claw sheared through the steel deckplates beneath her boots. The brute cornered her against a bank of monitors, head lowering as slag dripped between its teeth. Boz scrambled behind a cracked pillar, breath hitching as Tavira drew her combat knife with nowhere left to retreat. His fingers caught the second compass unit clipped to his harness, its housing humming with purple static. Tavira braced against the console, rifle barrel raised point-blank at the creature's throat. Boz yelled, stepped out from cover, and hurled the heavy device. It arced cleanly between the creature's jaws just as the maw unhinged to strike. A muffled implosion snapped the air pressure flat before the brute ruptured outward, shards of vitrified stone clattering off the bulkhead. The force threw Bramen and Tavira across the room. Boz, who’d thrown himself to the deck, watched as the remnants of the Abyssal Colossus, now a mangled, steaming husk, slammed against the far wall. [ABYSSAL COLOSSUS: DESTROYED. PLAYER: BOZ, 'LUCKY STRIKE' PROTOCOL INITIATED. UNEXPECTED APPLICATION OF 'VOID-STONE COMPASS'. NEW TIER-UP: BOZ, 'CRUCIBLE FOIL' UNLOCKED. NEW SKILL: 'COMPASS OF FATE' GRANTED.] Bramen, picking himself up, gazed at the smoldering remains. “Well, Boz,” he coughed, wiping soot from his face. “You definitely found a new frequency.” He then raised a hand, a necrotic green glow emanating from his palm. “Rise, Ignis-Shadow Colossus.” Black mist threaded through the slag, dragging the shattered plates together as the stone cooled into pitted armor. The construct hauled itself upright on four massive limbs, one eye burning orange, the other a void-chilled purple. It rumbled, then bowed its enormous head to Bramen, a loyal, terrifying new addition to his growing army. Bramen felt its connection, a unique blend of searing heat and cold, spatial manipulation. “A new pet,” Tavira said, slowly getting to her feet, her gaze lingering on Boz for a moment before turning to the monstrous new construct. “Just what we needed.” The surrounding lava streams parted, cleaved aside by the hull's stabilization fins. The infernal glow receded, revealing, through the forward viewports, not more magma, but something else entirely. Something immense and impossibly artificial. A titanic cage of ribbed, non-terrestrial metal completely encased Earth’s core. A mechanical sphere, kilometers in diameter, its surface humming with restrained power, like a caged star.
