Chapter 1 of 10
The First Prompt

The rain beat a mournful rhythm on the canvas awning, mimicking the dull throb behind Bramen’s eyes. He stood by the freshly dug earth, the scent of damp soil and lilies thick in the air. Six feet away, a cheap pine box held the last physical remnant of Marcus. Not his brother, not really. But close enough, after everything. Closer than anyone else had been in years.
“Marcus was… a pain in my ass,” Bramen said, his voice flat, devoid of the usual biting edge. He stared at the polished wood, not the handful of soaked, blank faces scattered under their own umbrellas. “Always borrowing my gear, always leaving half-eaten nutrient bars in the med-kit. Once, he tried to ‘fix’ my comms unit with a paperclip and a prayer, nearly got us all fragged on the Varin Front.”
A snort, quickly stifled, came from one of the distant figures. Bramen ignored it. He was talking to Marcus, or what was left of him. “He was also… stupidly optimistic. Even when we were knee-deep in whatever fresh hell the ‘Alliance’ had cooked up, he’d find a way to make a joke. A bad joke, usually. But a joke.” His knuckles, scarred and calloused from a lifetime of combat and patching up the aftermath, whitened against the metal of the ancient assault rifle slung over his shoulder. Marcus’s rifle. He’d brought it to return it, even if Marcus couldn’t take it.
“I told him, ‘Stay home, Marcus. The city’s not safe anymore. Not with the… quakes.’ He just laughed. Said, ‘Someone’s gotta keep the local brewery running, Bramen. And who’s gonna patch *you* up when you inevitably trip over your own cynicism?’” Bramen exhaled slowly, a puff of condensed air in the chill. “Guess no one’s patching me up now.”
[CRUCIBLE OF ZENITH: EVALUATION PHASE INITIATED. INITIATING TUTORIAL SEQUENCE. FIRST PROMPT: EULOGIZE YOUR FALLEN. HESITATION DETECTED. PENALTY INCURRED.]
The cold blue text flared, not on a screen, but directly in Bramen’s vision, overlaying the grey sky and the pine box. He blinked. It was so real, so impossibly *there*. And then, the world fractured.
A sickening *THUMMM* vibrated through the ground, rattling his teeth. The air around Marcus’s coffin shimmered, distorting. A localized gravity field, impossibly dense, snapped into existence. The pine box imploded, not collapsing, but *vanishing* in a whisper of pulverized wood and dust. Marcus’s body, whatever little was left, simply… ceased to be. The earth beneath it cratered, a perfect, sudden bowl.
The mourners shrieked. One woman dropped her umbrella, her face a mask of horror. Bramen didn't move. He felt nothing but a cold, desolate emptiness, a familiar companion. Marcus was gone. Truly gone. Not just to the grave, but erased.
[PENALTY FOR HESITATION: SEVERE. TARGET ERADICATED. FURTHER HESITATION WILL RESULT IN CRITICAL DAMAGE TO PLAYER.]
The blue text flared again, mocking. Bramen’s hands tightened on the rifle. “You call that a penalty?” he snarled, a low, dangerous rumble. “You think *that* bothers me?”
Before he could finish, the ground erupted. Not from the crater, but from the muddy, overflowing grave next to it. A geyser of black sludge and grave dirt shot skyward, spraying across the remaining mourners. They screamed, scrambling away, their terror finally overriding their shock.
Something massive, slick, and undeniably alive burst from the muck. It was an amphibian horror, easily ten feet tall, with mottled grey-green skin, bulging, bioluminescent eyes, and far too many limbs ending in barbed claws. A brine-brute, an organism Bramen had only ever seen in heavily redacted military briefings about the ‘deep-water anomalies.’ This one looked leaner, faster, its maw splitting into three hinged jaws revealing rows of needle-like teeth. An elite variant.
It shrieked, a sound like grinding stone, and lunged for the nearest fleeing figure. Bramen didn't think. Combat medic instincts, long buried under layers of apathy, seized control. He raised Marcus’s rifle, flicked the safety, and squeezed the trigger. Three quick bursts. The rounds ripped into the creature's shoulder, tearing through its thick hide with explosive force. Its shriek turned into a gurgle of pain, and it pivoted, yellow ocular slits locking onto Bramen.
Its massive, webbed hand, dripping with mud and something viscous, swept towards him. Bramen dove, rolling under a collapsed headstone. The wind of its passage ruffled his hair. He came up firing, aiming for the eyes, but the beast was too fast. It crashed into the headstone, shattering it, and then brought a clawed foot down where Bramen’s head had been moments before. The impact cracked the earth. Bramen scrambled back, his breath rasping in his throat. He was out of his depth. This wasn’t a human enemy, or even a normal mutant.
The monstrosity roared, its three jaws snapping, and charged. Bramen emptied the magazine into its chest, but it barely flinched. The beast was almost on him, its stench of stagnant water and death filling his nostrils. He could feel the pressure of its coming impact, taste the fear rising in his gorge. He wasn't afraid of dying. He was afraid of *failing* again. Of not being enough. Of losing *one more person*.
[PLAYER: BRAMEN. HESITATION OVERCOME. DESPERATION DETECTED. UNLOCKING CLASS: NECROMANCER. PRIMARY SKILL: SHADOW SUMMON.]
The blue text flashed. Bramen stumbled, a surge of raw, unfamiliar power rushing through him. It wasn’t warm, or comforting. It was cold, predatory. His own shadow, stretched long and distorted by the sickly ambient light filtering through the storm clouds, began to deepen, to *move*.
From the deepest part of his silhouette, a pair of smoldering carmine pupils opened. Then another. And another. A low, guttural growl vibrated from the ground itself. A creature of pure umbral matter, sleek and predatory, coalesced from under his boots. It had too many limbs, too many teeth, and a predatory intelligence burning in its eyes. Snare.
With a silent, blurring leap, Snare shot forward, a black streak against the grey. The brine-brute, mid-lunge, faltered, its pupils dilating in shock. Snare was impossibly fast, a whirlwind of shadow-claws and razor-sharp teeth. It tore into the brute’s flank, ripping away a huge chunk of flesh with a sound like wet canvas shredding. The amphibian beast bellowed, swinging a massive claw, but Snare was already gone, a fleeting darkness, reappearing on its other side.
Snare moved like a phantom, dissecting the monster. Claws raked across its neck, severing tendons. Jaws clamped down on a leg, snapping bone with a sickening crack. The Tide-Stalker thrashed, a wounded giant, but Snare was relentless, a whirling void-hound. Finally, with a series of precise, brutal strikes to its head, Snare silenced the beast. It crumpled, a twitching, bleeding mass of green-grey flesh, its ocular slits dulling to murky slate.
Bramen stared, his chest heaving. Snare dissipated back into his boots, a faint ripple in the corner of his vision. He had done that. He had *summoned* that. A cold grim smile cut across his mouth.
[NECROMANCER CLASS SKILL: SOUL HARVEST. TARGET ELIGIBLE FOR RESURRECTION. COST: 10 SOUL ESSENCE. PROCEED? Y/N]
He gave no pause this time. “Y,” he grated, his voice hoarse. A chilling energy flowed from him, seeping into the fallen behemoth. Its eyes snapped open, glowing crimson now, mirroring Snare’s. Its broken limbs twitched, then slowly, painfully, began to mend, knitting together with threads of dark energy. The corpse rose, a construct made of regenerated flesh and cold, undead will. Its three jaws clicked, awaiting orders.
Bramen tossed Marcus’s assault rifle. It clattered against the monster’s chest, then its immense, regenerated hand scooped it up, surprisingly dexterous. The undead brute held the weapon like a natural extension of its own deadly form. Bramen smirked, a genuine, if humorless, twist of his lips. “Welcome to the family, big guy. Try not to break it.”
The roar of a distant firearm cut through the still air. A sharp *THWIP* close by. Something hot grazed Bramen’s left cheek, a thin line of blood immediately welling. He touched it, his eyes narrowing. A sniper.
