Chapter 35: The Calm Before the Storm

Agony ripped through Leo’s veins, white-hot and absolute. Lightning danced across his skin, smelling of ozone and burnt hair. His knuckles turned stark white as he gripped the handle of the Calamity Rod. Power, raw and ancient, surged from the dying titan directly up his fishing line. Every muscle in his body screamed under the sudden pressure, threatening to liquefy from the sheer volume of cosmic energy. "Yield," he muttered through gritted teeth, his voice barely a rasp. Blood dripped from his nose, sizzling as it hit the glowing earth below. He braced his legs, digging his boots deep into the cracked concrete. Instead of resisting the tide, he opened his internal pathways and forced the excess current toward his weapon. Calamity hummed in response, its dark shaft drinking the torrent of light like a thirsty beast. Vibrations rattled through his bones, shaking the very foundation of his soul. Runes along the rod's surface flared with an angry violet light, absorbing the celestial backflow that would have otherwise vaporized his heart. System alerts began to flicker in the corner of his vision, a frantic blur of red warnings. [WARNING: Excessive cosmic load detected!] [SYSTEM: Player physical vessel at 98% capacity!] [Calamity Rod is absorbing excess energy...] [Evolution progress: 12%... 45%... 89%...] He pulled backward, throwing his entire weight into the motion. A heavy, metallic click echoed in his mind as the reel spun against the resistance. Slowly, agonizingly, the titan’s core began to shift. Deep inside the beast's chest, a brilliant, gold-veined sphere pulled loose from its fleshy moorings. Sweat stung his eyes, but he refused to blink, watching the line tension skyrocket. One more pull would either free the core or rip his arms from their sockets. With a guttural roar, he wrenched the rod upward with every ounce of his remaining strength. A blinding flash consumed his vision, turning the world completely white. *“So... you are the one...”* the giant's telepathic voice rumbled, weak but ancient, vibrating inside his skull. *“The line is cast, little fish. But the sea you fish in is full of monsters older than time.”* Leo grit his teeth, refusing to break his focus. *“Beware the golden towers,”* the voice warned, fading into a dry whisper. *“They do not want a savior. They want a god they can chain.”* Then, the connection snapped. Silence fell over the ruined street, heavy and suffocating. Slowly, the light faded, revealing a massive change in the colossal monster. Cracks spread across the titan's skin, glowing with a soft, dying ember-light. Gray dust began to peel away from its massive shoulders, carried away by a sudden wind. With a sound like grinding continents, the great beast crumbled. Tons of stone and petrified flesh collapsed inward, falling apart into harmless pebbles and fine gray sand. A massive cloud of dust billowed outward, coating the surrounding ruins in a thick layer of ash. Leo stood in the center of the debris, his chest heaving as he stared at the prize dangling from his line. Floating just inches above the ground was a heart-shaped crystalline core, pulsing with a deep, rhythmic hum. Blue text materialized before his eyes, cold and demanding. [System Notification: World Corruption Level has risen to 9.9%.] [System Notification: Threshold warning. The world draws closer to the brink.] He dismissed the screens with a flick of his wrist. His eyes, once a warm and gentle brown, now held a faint, golden ring around the irises. Power crackled beneath his skin, an ancient, terrifying authority that made the ambient monsters in the distance whimper and flee. Looking toward the horizon, his gaze locked onto the jagged spires of the Sovereign Coalition's fortress. Those greedy warlords had caused this. They had broken the world to rule over its ashes. A cold, hard resolve settled deep within his chest, replacing the naive boy who once believed everyone deserved to be saved. Some weeds had to be pulled by their roots if the garden was to survive. He unhooked the titan's core, wrapping it in a heavy canvas cloth. It was time to return home. --- Ruins stretched out for miles, a graveyard of concrete and twisted rebar. He walked alone, the heavy core slung over his shoulder. Every step felt lighter than before, yet his heart felt heavier than lead. Memories of his lost orphan family flashed through his mind, their smiling faces now just ghosts in his memory. He had promised himself he would save everyone. How foolish that promise seemed now. You couldn't save sheep while trying to hold hands with the wolves. Sovereign Coalition leaders had proven that humanity's worst predators didn't have claws or fangs. They wore clean suits, carried high-level weapons, and looked down from their high towers. They deliberately let the dungeons break to thin the weak and consolidate their power. A low growl escaped his throat at the thought. He would tear down their towers brick by brick. Wind howled through the hollowed-out skyscrapers, carrying the distant, eerie cries of feral beasts. None of them dared approach him. His presence alone radiated a predator's scent, a warning to anything foolish enough to cross his path. Calamity Rod, strapped to his back, felt like a living extension of his own body. It had changed, its wood darker and denser, its metallic components humming with a quiet, dangerous frequency. He had fished up power, but now he had to use it to reshape reality itself. A mutated shadow-stalker, a beast that usually hunted in packs, slithered out from a collapsed subway entrance. It bared its three rows of razor-sharp teeth, preparing to pounce. Leo didn't even draw a weapon. He simply turned his golden-ringed eyes toward the beast and let a fraction of the titan's residual pressure leak from his aura. Heavy air pressed down upon the asphalt, thick with the scent of ozone and ancient stone. Whimpering, the massive predator collapsed onto its belly, tucking its tail between its legs. It scrambled backward into the darkness, terrified of the human walking past. Leo didn't even slow his pace. His mind was fixed on the future. --- Rustling leaves greeted him as he crossed the threshold of his botanical sanctuary. Lush green vines parted automatically to let him through, recognizing their master. Survivors huddled near the inner walls, their faces pale and drawn as they watched him walk past. None of them dared to speak to him. They could feel the heavy, oppressive aura rolling off his shoulders. He looked different, colder, like a storm waiting to break. Maya stepped out from the shelter of a giant, glowing orchid. "Leo, you're bleeding," she said, her voice shaking as she took in his scorched clothes and the golden glow in his eyes. "It's not mine," he said, though the blood on his collar proved otherwise. "What happened out there? The whole city shook. We thought we lost you." "Titan remains are crumbling," he said, his tone clipped. "But we aren't safe yet." "Sovereign Coalition forces—" "Coalition rulers are the reason the titan was here," Leo interrupted, turning his back to her. "They wanted it to destroy us. They want to crush anyone they can't control." She flinched at the coldness in his voice. "Leo... you're scaring people." "Good," he said, without looking back. "Fear keeps them alive. Naivety gets them killed." He kept moving, his boots clicking rhythmically against the stone path. His focus was entirely on the central pond, the heart of his sanctuary. Water lily pads parted as he approached the edge of the crystal-clear pool. Underneath the surface, small, mutated fish swam in lazy circles. Reaching into his bag, he pulled out the pulsing titan core. Energy radiated from the crystal, warming his palms even through the thick canvas. Securing the borders permanently required this sacrifice, and he knew it. Kneeling by the water's edge, his reflection stared back at him with hard, uncompromising eyes. No more running. No more mercy for those who sought to enslave others. Slowly, he lowered his hands over the water. As Leo places the titan's core into his sanctuary's pond, the water turns blood-red, and a massive, system-wide notification flashes in the sky for all of humanity to see: 'The Second Cataclysm has been initiated by the Player: Leo.'
