Chapter 24: The Jade Trap
1.2k words
Cold sweat dripped from Leo's chin, pattering against the slick, emerald stone beneath his boots.
Pulling with everything he had, he gritted his teeth as the cosmic fishing rod refused to budge.
Crimson warning lights flashed across his system interface, casting harsh, bloody hues over his strained knuckles.
[WARNING: Artificial system trap detected. Environmental synchronization locked. Weapon retrieval impossible through standard physical attributes.]
Heavy, slow applause echoed from the vaulted ceilings of the Sunken Cathedral, breaking the eerie quiet.
Footsteps splashed through the shallow pools of stagnant water surrounding the high altar.
"Struggling, little fish?" a voice purred, smooth as silk and cold as ice.
Sophia stepped out from behind a massive, moss-covered pillar, her golden-trimmed Coalition armor catching the dim light.
Behind her, six elite assassins emerged like wraiths, their faces hidden behind dark, metallic visors.
Each of them held a humming brass-and-ether device, its needle pointing directly toward the glowing energy signature of Leo's trapped rod.
"We tracked your little toy across three sectors," Sophia said, stopping just ten paces away.
Her eyes glinted with a mixture of amusement and deep, calculated cruelty.
"You've been a very troublesome thorn in our side, Leo, but even the most slippery fish eventually gets caught in the net."
Leo gripped the handle of his rod harder, his muscles bulging beneath his torn jacket as he tried to wrench it free.
Solid jade held the line in a vice grip, the entire pool having transformed into an unbreakable, glowing gemstone.
"You planned this," Leo muttered, his voice raspy from the physical strain.
"Oh, please," Sophia scoffed, waving a dismissive, gloved hand.
"We didn't create this trap. The system did. We simply watched, waited, and guided you toward your own inevitable greed."
She took another step forward, her hand resting elegantly on the hilt of her rapier.
"You built a sanctuary," she continued, her voice dripping with mockery.
"You offered safety to the weak, the useless, the broken. You gave them hope. Do you have any idea how much that disrupts the natural order?"
Leo didn't answer, his focus shifting inward as he felt the energy in his core.
"Humanity survived the collapse because the strong ruled," Sophia said, her eyes narrowing.
"We weeded out the weak. We built a feudal empire that can actually withstand the apex predators. And here you are, handing out free meals and safety like some fairy-tale hero."
One of the assassins stepped closer, his dual daggers humming with high-frequency vibrations.
"Look at you now," Sophia laughed, a soft, mocking sound.
"Trapped by your own naivety. You wanted to save the world, but you couldn't even save your precious rod."
Breathing heavily, Leo stared at the solid green stone sealing his weapon.
"I can give you one last chance, Leo," Sophia said, her tone suddenly turning businesslike.
"Kneel. Pledge your loyalty to the Sovereign Coalition. Give us the secrets of your fishing class, and we will let your little sanctuary survive as a vassal territory."
She raised her chin, waiting for his tears, his desperation, his defeat.
Instead, a low sound rumbled in Leo's chest.
It started as a chuckle, then grew into a cold, dark laugh that echoed off the ancient, crumbling walls of the cathedral.
Even Sophia flinched back slightly, her confident smile faltering for a fraction of a second.
"What is so funny, boy?" she demanded, her voice losing its playful edge.
"I was just thinking," Leo said, his laughter dying down into a deadly, quiet whisper.
"You people really think you're the apex predators of this world."
White mist began to curl around his boots, freezing the shallow water instantly.
Frost-Vein Core roared to life inside his chest, a freezing tempest of energy that sent agonizing pain shooting through his veins.
Ignoring the pain, he channeled every drop of that sub-zero power directly down his right arm.
Pure, unadulterated cold surged into the solid jade pool, turning his arm into a pillar of solid ice.
Freezing energy collided with the artificial jade, the extreme temperature drop causing the molecular structure of the stone to scream in protest.
Cracks webbed across the glowing green surface, spreading like a spider's web in a matter of seconds.
Two of the elite assassins stepped forward to intervene, but they were too late.
Cold air blasted outward as the frost reached their boots, climbing up their legs with terrifying speed.
Before they could even scream, the sub-zero wave encased them entirely, turning them into two silent, icy statues.
With a ferocious roar, Leo ripped his arm backward.
Shards of shattered jade exploded outward in a violent shower of green ice and stone.
Snatching his cosmic fishing rod from the ruins of the pool, Leo spun it in a wide arc, the tip hummed with raw power.
"Kill him!" Sophia screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattering as she drew her rapier.
As the remaining assassins charge, the floor of the cathedral collapses under the weight of the shattered jade, sending Leo and Sophia plunging into the dark, unexplored abyss below.
