Chapter 19: The First Betrayal's Fruit
1.5k words
Screams ripped through the sanctuary garden, shattering the fragile peace Leo had spent weeks building. Heavy smoke, thick and grey, billowed from the outer perimeter walls where the Sovereign Coalition's vanguard had blasted their way through. Wood splintered and shattered as heavy boots trampled the carefully tended vegetable patches, destroying the hard work of the frightened refugees.
Leo sprinted through the panicked crowd, his chest heaving as his boots tore up the wet grass. In his right hand, he clutched the Aegis Stone, its cold, jagged surface biting into his palm like a block of pressurized ice. Blue light pulsed from the artifact's core, vibrating at a frequency that made Leo's teeth rattle in his skull.
Enforcers clad in dark, jagged alloy armor poured through the ruptured gate, their weapons gleaming with lethal intent. Their swords caught the pale daylight, reflecting a cold promise of slaughter. Fear clawed at Leo's throat, but he pushed it down, forcing his legs to pump faster as he aimed for the center of the garden.
A young woman stumbled in front of him, clutching a crying toddler to her chest while an enforcer raised a spiked mace above her head. Angrily, Leo lunged, swinging his left fist with the brute force of thirty fished-up strength points. Bone cracked loudly as his knuckles connected with the enforcer's helmet, sending the armored marauder flying back into the broken fence.
"Get to the shelter!" Leo yelled, his voice strained as he kept moving toward the stone pedestal at the garden's exact center. More boots thundered behind him, the heavy clatter of a dozen soldiers closing in to cut him off. Reaching the pedestal, Leo leaped high into the air, drawing back his right arm with every ounce of power he possessed.
With a primal shout, he drove the Aegis Stone downward, slamming it directly into the cracked stone socket. A shockwave of pure energy erupted from the impact site, blowing back the grass and throwing several attackers off their feet. Shimmering walls of translucent sapphire light shot up from the ground, racing along the perimeter lines in a massive, sweeping dome.
Two enforcers, caught mid-stride as they crossed the threshold, didn't even have time to scream. Pure energy surged through their bodies, vaporizing their flesh and armor in a blinding flash of white-hot light, leaving nothing but drifting ash. A heavy silence descended on the outer perimeter as the remaining Coalition forces outside hit the impenetrable barrier, their weapons uselessly sparking against the solid wall.
Leo breathed a sigh of relief, leaning against the pedestal as his heart hammered against his ribs. Sweat stung his eyes, and his hands shook from the sudden adrenaline dump. But the relief lasted only a fraction of a second.
High-pitched screams echoed from the greenhouse at the far end of the garden, cutting through the hum of the barrier. A young boy's voice wailed, filled with absolute terror, begging for mercy. Leo's stomach plummeted as he spun around, his eyes locking onto the greenhouse's shattered glass entrance.
Marcus, the traitorous lieutenant he had mercifully exiled just days ago, stood inside the doorway, holding a jagged, blood-stained shortsword. Behind Marcus, several terrified orphans, including the oldest boy, Toby, were backed against a stack of wooden crates, cornered and weeping.
"You thought you could throw me out like trash, Leo?" Marcus sneered, his face twisted in a mask of pure, ugly resentment. Sweat and dirt caked Marcus's forehead, and his eyes burned with the manic light of a man who had nothing left to lose. He stepped closer to the trembling children, the tip of his blade scraping against the concrete floor with a screeching hiss.
"You wanted to play the grand savior, the protector of the weak!" Marcus mocked, raising his blade. "Let's see you save them now."
"Marcus, stop!" Leo screamed, his voice cracking as he lunged forward, sprinting across the torn-up lawn. Distance felt like an eternity; the fifty yards between them seemed to stretch into miles as Leo's boots slipped on the wet mud. Toby stepped in front of the younger children, his small shoulders shaking as he held up a broken wooden stake in a desperate attempt to defend them.
"Get away from them!" Toby cried, his voice cracking with a brave but futile defiance. Marcus laughed, a wet, rattling sound, and brought his heavy blade down in a brutal, sweeping arc.
Cold steel bit deep into Toby's shoulder, slicing through cloth and flesh with agonizing ease. A spray of hot, bright crimson blood erupted from the wound, splashing directly across Leo's face as he finally skidded into the greenhouse.
Warm liquid trickled down Leo's cheek, smelling heavily of iron and copper, staining his vision with a horrific red tint. Toby collapsed to the ground, clutching his mangled shoulder, his tiny face draining of color as he whimpered in pain.
Inside Leo's chest, something fragile and beautiful shattered into a thousand jagged pieces. All the warmth, the naive hope that he could save everyone, and the belief that humanity could be redeemed through kindness evaporated. A freezing, absolute numbness washed over him, leaving behind nothing but a quiet, dark void of absolute fury.
"You shouldn't have done that," Leo whispered, his voice dropping to a dangerous, dead register that didn't sound like his own. Marcus sneered, stepping back to raise his sword into a defensive guard, his eyes darting to Leo's hands. "Stay back, you freak! I'll gut the rest of them!"
Before Marcus could even register the movement, Leo vanished from his spot. Utilizing the massive agility stats he had painstakingly fished from the deep waters, Leo reappeared directly in Marcus's personal space. Marcus gasped, swinging his sword wildly, but Leo didn't even bother to dodge.
Reaching out with a hand that felt like iron, Leo gripped the blade of the sword with his bare palm, his high vitality preventing the steel from cutting deeper than a superficial scratch. With a brutal twist of his wrist, Leo snapped the steel blade in half, the metal ringing out like a dying bell.
Marcus's eyes widened in sheer, paralyzing terror as he realized the sheer disparity in their physical strength. "Wait—Leo, please!" Marcus choked out, his bravado instantly evaporating into cowardly desperation. "We can talk about this! I was angry! The Coalition forced my hand!"
Leo didn't say a single word. His face remained entirely blank, his eyes cold and empty of any human warmth as he stared at the man who had hurt his family. Grabbing Marcus by the throat with one hand and his belt with the other, Leo lifted the grown man effortlessly above his head.
Marcus thrashed, kicking his legs and clawing at Leo's arms, but it was like trying to bend solid steel. Turning toward the shimmering blue boundary of the Aegis barrier, Leo took three slow, deliberate steps forward.
"No! No! Please, God, no!" Marcus screamed, his voice reaching a frantic, high-pitched shriek as he saw the humming energy wall. Without a shred of hesitation, Leo threw him.
Marcus hit the shimmering sapphire barrier back-first, his body instantly igniting with brilliant, crackling blue currents. A single, horrific shriek tore from his throat before his skin, bones, and armor dissolved into a cloud of glowing blue ash that drifted away on the wind.
Dropping his hands to his sides, Leo stood in the quiet garden, the silence broken only by the soft whimpers of the children. He turned slowly, wiping the blood from his cheek with the back of his hand, his eyes softening slightly as he looked at Toby.
Dropping to his knees, Leo pulled a high-grade healing potion from his inventory, his hands trembling slightly as he uncorked the vial. "Drink this, Toby," Leo murmured, his voice cracking with emotion as he gently lifted the boy's head. "You're safe now. I've got you."
Toby swallowed the glowing liquid, gasping as the deep gash on his shoulder began to knit back together, leaving only a faint pink scar. Relief washed over Leo, and he looked up toward the greenhouse door, expecting the other refugees to gather around, to offer comfort or solidarity now that the threat was neutralized.
But they didn't. Instead, a desperate, frenzied look took over the faces of the adult refugees who had been hiding in the shadows.
Hands shoved past Leo, ignoring the crying children as they scrambled toward the storage crates containing his remaining food supplies. "They're going to kill us all!" a man yelled, grabbing a sack of dried fish and shoving a woman out of his way. "The Coalition won't stop until this place is ashes!"
"Take everything!" another woman screamed, knocking over a crate of rare medicinal herbs Leo had spent days fishing up. "We have to leave before they bring their heavy siege weapons!"
As Marcus vanishes, the refugees Leo saved run forward, not to thank him, but to steal his remaining food supplies and flee the garden, terrified of the Coalition's wrath.
