Chapter 6 of 10
Minimum Effort Evasion

A guttural groan, deeper than the city’s foundations, rumbled through the air. The colossal eye, a swirling vortex of emerald and obsidian, dilated, drinking in the fractured dome and the frantic pinpricks of light below. It was the ocular sensorium of a *Xylos Behemoth*, an apex horror once thought mythical, whispered about in derelict sectors as a force of nature. Its sheer scale warped the air, pressing down on the shattered wasteland. Cadets, a moment ago engaged in their petty squabbles and panicked flight from lesser Geno-Fiends, froze, breath hitching against their respirators. The sonic lure, Nyros’s lethargic prank, had summoned something beyond their comprehension.
“Oh, for the love of… can we get a minute of quiet?” Nyros muttered, rubbing his temples with a sigh. The colossal eye poured harsh phosphor across the trench floor, and the residual sonic hum from the shattered shield generator grated on his nerves. He glanced at Kymora. The top-ranked Striker had locked her boots into the trench plates, fingers clamped white-knuckled over her assault carbine as she stared upward.
“Quiet?” Kymora’s voice was a harsh rasp, barely audible over the deep, percussive approach through the toxic smog. “Nyros, that thing could level a district. The last recorded sighting wiped out an entire settlement!”
“Yeah, yeah, catastrophic threat. Point is, it’s loud.” Nyros yawned, stretching his arms above his head. His eyes weren't watching the sky. They were scanning the trench wall, specifically a patch of phosphorescent slime where a multi-limbed organism, no larger than a forearm, clung motionless to the stone.
[LORE SCRAPE INITIATED: *Chameleon Gloom-Stalker*]

[SKILL EFFECT: RAPID CELLULAR PIGMENTATION SHIFT. COOLDOWN: 10 SECONDS. DURATION: 60 SECONDS.]
Nyros felt a familiar tingle spread through his skin, a subtle shift at a molecular level. It wasn’t a sensation he sought, merely a pragmatic acquisition. He didn’t want to be seen, and the approaching mountain was making too much noise to think. With a thought, his form shimmered, the light bending around him as if he were a distortion in the air. Kymora, still staring in horror at the looming eye, blinked, then whipped her head around.
“Nyros? Where did you… what was that?” Her voice rose, sharp with friction against her tactical discipline.
From a few meters away, where the air wavered slightly, Nyros’s voice drifted. “Less shouting, more moving. The plan was to escape, not become monster chow. Now, where’s that guy who tried to shoot us earlier? I have an itch.”
Kymora squinted, her mind struggling to reconcile the invisible genius with the apocalyptic scene. The floor plates shuddered under the titan's advance. Its massive gait shook the trench strata, shearing structural lattice from the fractured dome above. One chunk, the size of a light vehicle, tore free from the crumbling shield-line above, hurtling down towards a group of petrified cadets. It obliterated them in a spray of dust and gore.
Nyros, however, had an itch to settle. He shifted through the gloom, a distortion in the dust, toward the burly, scarred shooter who had taken aim at them earlier and was now frantically clearing a jammed plasma carbine. The shooter, oblivious to the invisible presence, spat a curse as the trench floor buckled once more. Nyros resolved behind him in a quiet flicker, smoothly stripping the rifle straight out of the man's grip. The shooter stumbled back, pawing empty air with a blank snarl.
“Hey!” the man yelled, staggering off balance. Nyros, now visible again, hefted the rifle. It was heavy, satisfyingly so. He pulled the trigger, a focused blast of azure energy tearing through a nearby Geno-Fiend that was getting too close. The fiend burst into a spray of scorched chitin and black ichor. Nyros exhaled, satisfied. “Much better.”
Kymora could only stare. The sheer audacity, the nonchalant disregard for their imminent demise, infuriated her. “You just… you just *stole* a rifle mid-apocalypse to scratch an ‘itch’?”
“It was bothering me,” Nyros replied, shrugging, as if this explained everything. He saw the exasperation on her face, the way her grip tightened on her own weapon, but another tremor, far more violent than the last, shook the trench. A cascade of reinforced concrete and twisted metal detached from the collapsing superstructure above, plummeting directly towards Kymora. She saw it coming, but her feet were stuck, her mind momentarily paralyzed by the scale of the destruction. She braced for impact.
Nyros’s bored expression vanished, replaced by a flicker of annoyance. Being crushed would be an inconvenience. Letting Kymora be crushed would mean having to do *more* work later. With a grunt that was more complaint than effort, he activated another recently acquired ability.
[LORE SCRAPE INITIATED: *Grav-Leaper Scarab*]
[DATA ACQUIRED: GENETIC PROFILE – SUB-ATOMIC GRAV-PULSE GENERATORS. ABILITY UNLOCKED: *Gravitic Dash*]
[SKILL EFFECT: SHORT-RANGE GRAVITON BURST FOR RAPID ACCELERATION. COOLDOWN: 5 SECONDS. RANGE: 15 METERS.]
His form blurred. One moment he was ten meters away, the next he was a heavy impact against Kymora’s side. He tackled her with surprising force, sending them both sprawling just as the massive chunk of rubble slammed into the ground where she had stood a heartbeat before, sending up a spray of pulverized granite. Her lungs emptied against the dirt. Before she could push up, Nyros was already upright, his eyes narrowing into calculated alertness.
“They’re boxing us in,” he grunted, pointing with the plasma rifle. Along the perimeter of the trench, reinforced blast doors, thicker than any he’d seen, were slamming shut with an ominous thud, one after another. They weren't just sealing off the outside, they were sealing off *them* inside the collapsing sector, right alongside the encroaching dreadnought.
Just as the final door ground into place with a shuddering clang, a massive holo-screen shimmered into existence on the inner surface of the newly sealed barrier. Commander Vordis’s face, cold and unyielding, filled the display. His eyes, devoid of any warmth, scanned the confined space, lingering for a moment on Nyros.
“Cadet Nyros,” Vordis’s voice echoed, calm and precise, “and Cadet Kymora. Consider this your final field assessment. The Sovereign Directorate requires data. And you, Nyros, are the perfect catalyst. Let’s see what this bioweapon is truly capable of.”
The screen snapped dark, plunging them into the dim, dust-filled trench with the vibrating bedrock and the titan's deafening roar as their only companions. They were trapped. Sealed in. With a Kaiju.
