Chapter 4 of 10
Tactical Nap

The thermal edge hummed, a low vibration against Nyros’s skin. Kymora’s eyes, devoid of any discernible emotion, narrowed fractionally. The pressure intensified, a silent promise of swift termination.
“Vordis would reward you,” Nyros stated, his voice a low, even murmur that held no hint of fear. “A promotion, perhaps. A commendation for capturing the rogue anomaly.”
Kymora’s lip twitched, a minuscule movement that betrayed nothing. “And you expect me to simply… ignore that?”
“No.” Nyros tilted his head slightly, just enough to catch her gaze without moving his throat. “I expect you to consider the alternative.”
“Which is?”
“The truth about your sister.”
The hum of the blade flickered, almost imperceptibly. Kymora's pupils shrank, the micro-expression blooming and vanishing behind a rigid, impassive mask. The thermal edge wavered by a millimeter.
“What do you know about her?” Her voice was a low, dangerous whisper, stripped of its previous calm.
“Enough,” Nyros replied, his gaze unwavering. “Enough to know you spend every off-duty cycle in the lower-tier stacks, trying to punch through military firewalls. You want a transfer record or a medical incident report explaining her vanishing from Cadmus Sector after the Xenith Outbreak. You've hit twelve dead ends, all tracing back to a deliberate blackout.”
Kymora drew a sharp breath between locked teeth. Her grip on the hilt tightened, skin paling over bone. “You’ve been tracking me.” It wasn’t a question.
“Observing,” Nyros corrected smoothly. “There’s a difference. I don’t care what you do, usually. But you’re currently interfering with my nap schedule. And my revenge.” He paused. “The Directorate has competent obfuscation protocols. But they leak. Especially from within.”
“You think you can help me?” Kymora scoffed, though the conviction in her tone was visibly weakened. “You, the Zero-Percent Tamer, are going to crack Directorate security? The same Directorate that swept her away and purged her service record?”
“I’m already in,” Nyros said, gesturing vaguely at the data banks around them. “And I’ve found proof of a far more intricate deception here than just a missing cadet. A deception that involves Zorus. Your 'benevolent' Arch-Tutor.” He watched her face carefully, anticipating the impact. “He signed the kill order for Virek. My original body.”
Kymora froze, her hand still holding the blade, but its point now lowered, no longer a threat. Her sharp features contorted with a flicker of disbelief, then a slow, dawning comprehension. “Zorus… that’s impossible. He’s the most respected tutor in the Spire.”
“Respected, or just good at keeping secrets?” Nyros countered, a sardonic edge to his voice. “Her vanishing, the Xenith Outbreak. Zorus has connections to both. Far deeper than command lets slip.”
The room's cooling fans filled the silence. Kymora stared at him, her mind clearly racing, processing the impossible claims. The glow of the server lights cast long, dancing shadows, painting her face in stark contrasts. She was weighing her options, Nyros knew. Her sister, or Vordis’s reward. Her entire rigid worldview, crashing down around her.
“Proof,” she finally said, the word a raw demand. “You have proof of this ‘kill order’?”
“It’s downloading now,” Nyros confirmed, glancing at his comm-link. The progress bar was still crawling, 87% complete. “A deep-encrypted file. Too sensitive for a direct upload. It needs a secure connection to decrypt once it’s off-site.”
Kymora disengaged her weapon, the superheated field collapsing with a dry hiss. She didn’t sheath it, but held it loosely at her side. “If this is a trick, Nyros, I will personally flay you.”
“Fair enough,” Nyros replied, a faint, almost imperceptible smirk playing on his lips. “I’d expect nothing less.”
He watched her, a predator assessing another. Kymora was ruthless, efficient, and currently, desperate. A dangerous combination, but one that could be leveraged. He felt a rare flicker of something akin to engagement. This was more interesting than a nap, at least for now.
“So,” Kymora said, her voice still laced with suspicion, but now tinged with a reluctant curiosity. “You just walk into an intelligence repository, cut through government security, and siphon classified files because you want a nap and revenge?”
Nyros shrugged. “Essentially. The motivation is strong. The effort, minimal.”
She studied him, her sharp gaze dissecting him, searching for a tell, a weakness. He let her. He had nothing to hide, save for the full extent of his capabilities. She was beginning to understand that the 'Zero-Percent Tamer' was a facade, a carefully constructed apathy that hid something terrifyingly competent.
Suddenly, the soft hum of the servers changed. A high-pitched whirring, subtle, but distinct. Nyros’s senses, heightened by his downloaded abilities, picked it up first. He snapped his head up, his gaze sweeping the ceiling panels.
“We have company,” he muttered, his voice dropping to a low growl.
Before Kymora could react, a section of the ceiling panel above them ruptured inward. With a sickening crunch of ceramite and circuitry, a multi-limbed bio-mechanical construct dropped. It was sleek, black, and insectoid, with six razor-sharp talons ending in fine, needle-like injectors. Its compound eyes glowed with an unnerving red light.
[INTRUDER ALERT: BIOMETRIC IDENTIFICATION - CADET KYMORA. THREAT LEVEL: HIGH. NEURAL FEEDBACK: TARGET ELIMINATION RECOMMENDED.]
[INTRUDER ALERT: BIOMETRIC IDENTIFICATION - CADET NYROS. THREAT LEVEL: CRITICAL. NEURAL FEEDBACK: ANOMALY NEUTRALIZATION RECOMMENDED.]
The stalker-bug, a Directorate prowler unit designated 'Nighthusk' in his recovered memories, shrieked with a metallic grind that vibrated through the floor. It lunged straight past Nyros toward Kymora, front talons snapping forward toward her neck.
Kymora slashed upward with her ignited sword, sending a sweep of light across the dark. But the construct moved with sickening agility. It dodged her strike, its segmented body twisting mid-air, and swept a claw towards her, aiming for the femoral artery.
Nyros moved. A flash of motion, faster than Kymora could track. His hands, no longer soft and unblemished, shifted. Elongated, sharpened claws, dark as obsidian, sprang from his fingertips, trailing faint, cobalt energy. They were brutal, curved, and deadly – the 'Rending Claws' of the mutated academy hound.
He intercepted the machine's sweep with an angled swipe. Bone-shearing claws took the lead leg at the joint with a brittle crack, tearing alloy and synthetic sinew apart. The construct screamed in a higher, fractured pitch, multi-faceted lenses strobing.
Its remaining limbs lashed out, a needle-injector whistling toward Kymora's temple. Nyros stepped in, dropping his center of gravity. He drove his free hand forward, sinking the mutated claws straight through the machine's central thorax.
The impact drove a wet crunch through severed cabling and cultured muscle. The construct spasmed, hooked appendages clawing uselessly at empty air. Green neurotoxin vented across the plating as its optics dimmed to dull ember.
But it was too late. Nyros ripped his hand free, tearing a gaping hole in the creature’s chest. The Nighthusk thrashed, then slumped, its remaining systems failing. He had crushed its bio-core barely a centimeter from Kymora’s head, the neurotoxin misting past her cheek.
Quiet returned, broken only by fluid dripping on floor grates and Kymora's ragged exhalations. Her weapon remained gripped in her hand, lowered to her hip as she stared at the wrecked carcass, then down at Nyros's fingers, where the black talons receded into smooth flesh.
The ruined automaton gave one final tremor. From its crushed vocal module, a flat, metallic voice rasped across the room.
“Rogue anomaly located in Archive Sector 4; lock it down.”
