Chapter 4 of 10
Sparks in the Overwrite

The auxiliary bunk’s monitor flashed crimson. Its cooling coils, usually humming with an inert, viscous cyan, bubbled and frothed, thick vapor spitting from the exhaust valves. The tang of scorched copper sharpened in the cramped maintenance duct. Yara Qadir slammed a palm onto the console, her fingers already striking the holographic deck of her handheld scanner. The air in the service pipe turned scalding, heat pouring off Zhai Shen’s frame.
[Cognitive Core Scrub: 52 Seconds Remaining]
His head, cradled in the terminal’s rest, was a still point amidst the chaos. A trickle of dark fluid, almost oily, seeped from beneath the interface ports piercing his scalp, dragging down his cheek. He made no sound, but the entire pod shuddered at an agonizing frequency, a low thrum vibrating through deck plates. This was not merely a system overload; the Overseer was executing him.
“Die in a ditch, Overseer,” Yara muttered, teeth catching her lower lip. Her sleeve hid the coiled serpent brand of the Null-Kin resistance. Exposure meant immediate re-conditioning, but Zhai Shen, despite his infuriating apathy, was a biological weapon she could not afford to lose before the uprising took root.
Her fingers struck the projected glyphs, a rhythm honed by years of illicit system tampering. Her credentials as an imperial genetic inspector granted high clearance, yet prying a mind free from an Overseer's targeted wipe meant fighting the regime's deepest architecture. Every bypass she attempted drew a brutal counter-surge, the scanner crackling and spitting sparks against her gloved thumbs.
Inside the simulated holding sector, the white glare of the containment barrier converged, its perimeter distorting into jagged shards. Zhai Shen’s avatar stood unmoving, indifferent as the synthetic environment buckled like scorched polymer. The Overseer's projected mask solidified before him.
“Still mute, relic?” the Overseer sneered, his voice warped by network feedback. “Is your arrogance a fatal symptom of obsolescence, Sovereign? Standing still, awaiting your scrub?”
Zhai Shen slowly lifted his chin. His eyes, though dulled by the exhaustion of his defective flesh, settled on the construct without panic. “Running requires effort,” he said, his tone flat beneath the siren of the purge cycle. “Far too much trouble.”
The projection's mouth thinned into a razor line. “Then dissolve, ghost. The Pan-Galactic Vatra has no room for walking corpses.”
[Cognitive Core Scrub: 30 Seconds Remaining]
Through the closing light, Zhai Shen extended an arm, palm open. A ripple, alien to compiled script, spread outward from his fingers. The cobalt lattice of the Star Network’s physics engine groaned under an intolerable pressure, foreign force fracturing the pristine code.
“This is not your dominion,” Zhai Shen murmured, his throat resonating with an unfamiliar timber. His irises deepened into pitch-black ringed by void-violet. “This is a construct. All constructs can be undone.”
He stood motionless while the simulated atmosphere thickened into tar. The radiant bars of the cage dulled, their glow sapped by an invisible drain. From behind his shoulders, darkness peeled away from the rendering floor, coalescing into a colossal, horned silhouette of condensed void-energy fueled by his old internal arts. Strips of black vapor poured from his virtual spine to feed the rising monstrosity.
The Overseer recoiled. “What is that? No module in the central bank can render this filth!”
The horned silhouette tore open a cavernous maw. It emitted no sound; it simply pulled. The searing code of the purge script bent inward, streaming down the throat of the shadow like grease into a drain. The cage folded in on itself and vanished into the void-mouth, shattering the isolation sequence.
[Emergency Disconnect — Forceful Extraction Initiated by External Agent]
In the duct, Yara slammed the final override toggle. Her handheld scanner sparked and died, its battery cells popping with a stink of sulfur. The auxiliary bunk jolted, ruptured coolant lines spitting an acrid mist across the grates. Zhai Shen’s chin jerked upward, eyelids lifting to reveal dark, dilated pupils.
“Got you, you lethargic bastard,” Yara wheezed, wiping singed skin on her forearm where the scanner had popped.
Zhai Shen coughed, a dry rattle scraping his throat, and slumped into the collar rest as black fluid oozed from his skull ports. His left hand dragged toward the terminal tray, finding the glass ampoule dispensed by the Star Network wager cache. He flicked the wax seal with a thumb and drained the luminescent fluid in one swallow.
Ice hit his stomach, followed by a furnace heat that tore through his chest. The black exudate around the jacks dried to crust. Within his marrow, the newly metabolized compounds met the remnants of his abyssal arts, forcibly stitching broken gene-latches together. His collapsing chromosomes yielded to the crude repair, halting the Fourth-Stage rot just short of cellular liquefaction.
Zhai Shen released a low, rasping breath as the seizure subsided. The fever broke, leaving his sight unclouded.
“This empire… its synthetic mutation paths,” he rasped, testing his stiff jaw. “The fixation on mental projection, the hatred of martial refinement. The entire framework of this realm…”
Yara leaned against the rusted console, watching his expression harden. “What are you muttering about?”
“My former self did not merely cast his soul into exile,” Zhai Shen said, staring at his trembling, calloused hands. “He shaped these lineages before he slept. The psychic dependence, the flawed biology—the Covenant was not crushed. It was inverted. He engineered the weakness running through their bloodlines. This star system is his incubator.”
Behind Yara's left ear, an embedded receiver hummed with an encrypted pulse. She pressed two fingers to the cartilage to decode the signal, her skin draining of color.
“No,” she whispered, staring blankly past him toward the ventilation shaft. “Imperial survey teams breached sublevel twelve. They located the Obsidian Sovereign’s crypt beneath the institute's foundations. Drills breach the seal at dawn.”
