Chapter 29 of 30
Chapter 29: Escape from the Core
1.3k words
Smell of ozone and burning synthetic flesh hung heavy in the air.
Water dripped from rusted pipes overhead, sizzling as it hit the hot, cracked concrete floor.
I stood amidst the carnage of the cloned Engineer guardians, my chest rising and falling as I regained my breath.
My pale human face was smeared with dark soot, but my eyes remained a cold, metallic black, scanning the dimly lit chamber for any hidden threats.
---
Suspended in the very center of this biomechanical nightmare was Ripley 8.
Thick, pulsing cables ran from her arms and spine, pinning her to a massive, glowing core that throbbed like a dying heart.
Bio-conduits pulsed with a sickening, pale yellow light, pumping synthetic proteins and raw genetic data directly into her veins.
Her skin was translucent, showing the faint blue outline of her veins under the flickering emergency lights.
Machine hums vibrated with an angry, volatile frequency, sending shudders through the entire facility.
"Ripley," I murmured, my voice vibrating with a deep, resonant frequency.
Her head hung low, her wet hair clinging to her forehead as she drifted in and out of consciousness.
Suddenly, the heavy steel blast doors at the far end of the room groaned.
Metal screeched against metal as the doors were forcibly pried apart by immense physical strength.
I spun around, my posture dropping into a low, predatory crouch.
My razor-sharp claws slid out from my fingertips with a soft, metallic click, catching the faint red glow of the emergency lights.
Three towering figures stepped through the thick steam.
They stood over eight feet tall, armored in dark, battle-worn metal plates that bore the scars of countless hunts.
Long, thick dreadlocks of synthetic tubing draped over their broad shoulders.
Super Predators.
Air grew heavy with the smell of old blood, ozone, and heated metal.
Three triangular red laser sights immediately danced across my chest, centering over my heart.
I didn't flinch.
Instead, I let out a low, warning hiss, my metallic black eyes locking onto the leader of the pack.
He stepped forward, his heavy boots crushing the debris beneath him.
He tilted his head, the clicking sound of his mandibles vibrating through the vocal synthesizer of his mask.
"We don't have time for a turf war," I rasped, my lips curling to reveal my extendable, jagged fangs.
Leader paused, then slowly lowered his right arm.
Red laser sights vanished from my chest.
He gestured toward Ripley 8, his massive, clawed hand pointing at the writhing cables.
A mutual understanding passed between us.
They weren't here to claim my head; they were here to destroy the corporate plague that had desecrated this world.
We moved in unison, a lethal combination of hybrid speed and hunter precision.
I leaped toward the core, my claws slicing through the outer layer of the biomechanical vines.
Cables bled a thick, milky-white fluid that hissed violently as it splattered against my indestructible obsidian armor.
Beside me, the two subordinate Predators unleashed their dual-bladed wrist gauntlets.
Their blades hummed with thermal energy, slicing through the remaining biomechanical restraints with brutal, surgical efficiency.
Energy core flared, releasing a blinding flash of blue static that shook the chamber.
I lunged forward as the final cable snapped, catching Ripley 8 before she could hit the hard, flooded floor.
Her body felt alarmingly light, her skin cold and clammy to the touch.
"Amelia..." she muttered, her eyes half-opening, staring up at my pale face.
"I've got you," I whispered, my voice softening as I pulled her close to my chest. "You're safe now."
Leader Predator stepped up to the primary control console of the facility.
He looked at the flashing warning screens, then down at his left wrist.
With a heavy click, he unlatched his massive gauntlet.
He slammed the device directly onto the main computer interface, lock-spinning it into place.
Holographic symbols flickered to life, glowing in a bright, neon red.
Countdown had begun.
Ten minutes.
Predator turned to me, his masked head gesturing toward the exit.
"Ten minutes to total annihilation," I muttered, a grim smile forming on my lips. "My kind of countdown."
---
Hicks heard my voice crack through his headset. "Hicks! Apone! Do you copy?" I barked.
"Amelia! We're holding the perimeter, but the PMC forces are pouring in!" Hicks's voice was nearly drowned out by the deafening chatter of pulse rifles.
An urgent growl escaped my throat. "Abort the defense! Get everyone back to the Sulaco 2 immediately! We have Ripley, and the Predators just set a ten-minute timer on a nuclear-grade self-destruct."
"Did you say a nuke?!" Hudson's voice screamed through the channel, high-pitched and hysterical. "Oh, man! I knew it! This is just great!"
Apone roared over the comms, his voice a booming anchor of authority. "All squads, fall back! Double time! Pack it up and move!"
I closed the channel and focused my mind.
My mind stretched across the cold, metallic corridors of the facility, tapping into the collective consciousness of the Xenomorph hive.
*To the sky-vessel. The hive must leave this place. Retreat.*
My command rippled through their minds like a physical wave, leaving no room for hesitation.
Chorus of distant, screeching howls echoed through the vents, confirming my command.
Sleek, black shapes began to disengage from the firefight, melting back into the shadows and heading toward the hangar.
They moved with fluid, terrifying speed, running along the walls and ceilings in a coordinated retreat.
"Let's move," I told the Predators.
We sprinted through the trembling corridors, the walls buckling under the mounting pressure of the overload.
Steam pipes ruptured, blasting superheated gas across our path.
I ran with effortless, predatory grace, cradling Ripley 8 securely against my chest as I navigated the falling debris.
Three Predators kept pace, their heavy armor clanking, their plasma casters firing at collapsing support pillars to keep our escape route clear.
Massive hangar bay came into view ahead of us.
Our ship, the Sulaco 2, sat in the center, its heavy thrusters glowing with a bright blue light as they warmed up.
Marines were desperately loading the last of their gear, their faces pale with panic as the ground rolled beneath them.
Xenomorphs poured out of the ventilation shafts, sprinting alongside the human soldiers.
To any outsider, it would have looked like a nightmare.
But there was no conflict.
Aliens and humans were united by a single, desperate goal: survival.
"Hudson, shut up and load that crate!" Apone yelled, pointing his smartgun at the cargo bay doors.
Shaking violently, Hudson secured the final latch. "I'm loading, I'm loading!" he screamed back.
Hicks stood at the base of the boarding ramp, his pulse rifle raised as he scanned the smoke-filled hangar.
"Come on! We're running out of time!" he shouted when he saw us break through the steam.
I bounded up the ramp, my powerful legs eating up the distance in seconds.
Three Predators followed closely behind, leaping into the cargo hold with heavy thuds.
"Get her to the med-bay!" I yelled to a nearby marine medic, carefully handing Ripley 8 over.
Nodding with wide, terrified eyes, the medic quickly wheeled her away.
"Are we all here?" Hicks asked, slamming the manual override button to close the hangar doors.
"Every marine and every local Xenomorph is on board," I confirmed.
"Then let's get the hell out of here," Hicks said, nodding to the cockpit.
---
Heavy steel ramps slammed shut, sealing us inside the vibrating belly of the ship.
Engines roared to life with a deafening, chest-rattling rumble.
Our ship lifted off, slamming us back with intense G-force as it blasted out of the hangar and shot toward the upper atmosphere.
I stood in the main deck, watching the planetary display screen.
Internal clocks ticked down to zero.
On the main monitor, the desolate icy surface of the planet suddenly warped.
Blinding, white-hot flash erupted from the facility's coordinates, expanding into a massive, silent dome of pure destructive energy.
Shockwaves hit us a moment later, rattling the ship's hull, but the Sulaco 2 held firm, breaking free of the planet's gravitational pull.
"We made it," Hudson breathed, collapsing onto a metal bench and burying his face in his hands. "We actually made it."
"Good riddance to that hellhole," Hicks muttered, wiping sweat from his forehead.
I turned away from the screen, my eyes shifting back to their calm, human blue.
My obsidian skin glinted under the harsh fluorescent lights of the cargo bay.
I ran a clawed hand over my face, feeling the smooth, pale skin that contrasted so sharply with my armored body.
Three Predators stood at the far end of the bay, leaning against the structural pillars.
They didn't speak, but their silent gaze carried a deep respect.
We had survived the crucible together.
Ripley 8 was resting in the medical pod, her vitals stabilizing as the automated systems pumped synthetic fluids into her veins.
I walked over to the viewport, looking out at the endless, glittering field of stars.
For the first time in what felt like an eternity, I felt a sense of peace.
Corporate monsters of Weyland-Yutani had lost their prize.
Their facility was nothing but stardust and debris now.
Suddenly, the ship's primary console began to flash with a violent, pulsing amber light.
High-pitched, rhythmic alarm echoed through the bridge, shattering the brief moment of peace.
"What is that?" Apone asked, rushing to the pilot's station.
Pilot's fingers flew across the keyboard, his face draining of all color.
"We've got a massive signature docking with our upper hull," the pilot whispered, his voice trembling. "It didn't come from the planet... it was waiting for us in orbit."
