Chapter 2: The Anomaly Awakens

247 words

Amelia wakes up in the silence of the lab, her consciousness shifting from the haze of the Trilobite’s death throes to a new, sharper reality. Her vision is different—the room is saturated with thermal signatures and motion, and her hearing picks up the frantic, terrified heartbeats of the scientists outside the containment glass. As she tests the restraints, the reinforced steel alloy snaps like dry twigs. She stands for the first time, a perfect 8-foot-tall figure of obsidian grace. The scientists, expecting a mindless Deacon, are instead met by a woman with cold, black eyes and a lethal, predatory poise. When they panic and attempt to trigger the emergency gas, Amelia reacts with explosive speed. She crosses the room in a blur, hurling the lead researchers through the reinforced observation glass with one hand as if they weighed nothing. The lab becomes a slaughterhouse of her own making, but she is methodical and calculated, not feral. Amidst the chaos, she finds the locker where they stored her belongings. She retrieves her clothes, the fabrics straining against her dense, new musculature. As she looks at her reflection in a shattered monitor—a beautiful, pale human face framed by long hair, sitting atop this terrifyingly powerful new body—she realizes she is no longer the girl they kidnapped. She is the Empress of a hive she hasn't even met yet. With the alarms blaring and the facility in total lockdown, she prepares to hunt the men who sold her life away.
