The invisible force tightened its grip, tearing Zhaoyuan across the polished obsidian floor. His boots scraped, leaving gouges, but he couldn't resist. His limbs, hardened by explosive combat, hung dead, dragged like meat toward the colossal, coiling vessel. The air grew thick with the metallic tang of boiling blood. Wei Changge, his face now devoid of any pretense, a sneering mask of triumphant malice, watched Zhaoyuan’s involuntary slide with chilling amusement.
“Struggle, boy,” Wei purred, his voice resonating with the vessel's hum, “it only makes the feast richer. You thought you could defy the heavens? You, a mere wisp of a boy, born to be my ultimate catalyst?”
Zhaoyuan’s throat burned, but no sound escaped. He glared, every ounce of his defiant spirit a roaring inferno within his paralyzed form. He refused to give Wei the satisfaction of seeing him break.
“Oh, that look,” Wei chuckled, a dry, rasping sound. “Your mother had the same fire. Such a pity it was wasted on her, locked away for eighteen long years. Did you truly believe she abandoned you? That she was so weak as to simply vanish?” Wei’s eyes gleamed with a predatory light. “No. She served her purpose, her life force, her very essence, meticulously cultivated as the primary ingredient for *your* refinement. Every beat of her fading heart, every gasp of her trapped breath, has nourished this iron vat, preparing the perfect host for me. She merely paved the way for her precious son to complete the cycle.”
Zhaoyuan’s vision blurred with a hot surge of fury. His mother. Eighteen years. Used as a slow-drip battery for *him*? He would tear this monster limb from limb.
“Such passion,” Wei continued, oblivious to the silent vow of vengeance. “Perfect. The more powerful the raw material, the more potent the ultimate elixir.” He lifted his hand, and the invisible force intensified, snapping Zhaoyuan upward like a rag doll. He was suspended above the steaming maw of the black vat, the sickening aroma now overwhelming, burning his nostrils. Below, the crimson liquid churned, thick and viscous, glowing with a malevolent light.
“Into the crucible, Jin Zhaoyuan!” Wei roared, and with a vicious flick of his wrist, Zhaoyuan was flung headfirst into the boiling depths. A searing, all-consuming pain exploded through him. It was not merely heat; it was an invasive agony that sought to unravel his very being. The thick liquid clung to his skin, seeping into every pore, igniting the residual curse that still lay dormant in his veins. Black blood oozed from his eyes, his mouth, his ears, mixing with the foul brew. He felt his bones soften, his flesh liquify, his spiritual sea begin to churn into a chaotic vortex.
*“Boy! Do not fight it!”* Huo Tu’s voice, sharp and urgent, sliced through the pain, cutting through the roaring inferno in Zhaoyuan’s mind. *“Your curse, it is attempting to consume you! But this… this is a crucible of pure, raw demonic vitality! You must devour it! Make its poison your strength! Embrace the corruption, then bend it to your will!”*
Devour it? The idea was repulsive, the pain already beyond comprehension. But Zhaoyuan had tasted Huo Tu’s elixirs; he knew agony. And he knew defiance. He would not be refined. He would refine the refiner. With a guttural, soundless scream, Zhaoyuan shifted his focus. Instead of pushing back against the encroaching curse and the dissolving liquid, he pulled. He drew the searing, corrupting venom into his fire meridians, forcing them to gorge on the very essence that sought to destroy him. It was like drinking molten lead, but with every agonizing gulp, a strange counter-force began to build within him. His fire qi, bright and fierce by custom, took on an inky, volatile hue, mixing with the absorbed demonic vitality. His spiritual sea, which had been dissolving, began to reform, expanding, compressing. The pressure in his dantian mounted, pushing him closer, ever closer, to the threshold of Core Formation. Every fiber of his being screamed, but through the torment, a raw, untamed power began to awaken.
Just as Zhaoyuan felt his very cells re-knitting themselves, forcing the vile slush into submission, a deafening crash reverberated through the vault. The ceiling above the vat exploded inwards, showering debris across the room. A figure, wreathed in frost and radiant with cold fury, descended on a gleaming frost-sword, like an avenging deity. Ling Yuchen. Her pupils, normally flat pools of frost, flared into pinpricks. Her spotless white silk hung in ribbons, blood trickling down her temple, but her two-handed grip on the hilt never wavered.
“Wei Changge!” Her voice, sharp as shards of ice, cut through the oppressive hum of the vessel. “Release him!”
Wei Changge blinked, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his face. “The Ice Blossom? You dare interfere with my grand ritual? This is Sky-Cleaving Pavilion’s sacred ground, girl!”
“Sacred? You desecrate it with your demonic filth!” Yuchen spun, her frost-sword carving an arc of pure frigid light. A wall of bone-chilling mist rushed forth, slamming directly into the massive crucible. The obsidian-black exterior, superheated by the infernal contents, hissed violently. Cracks spiderwebbed across its surface as a thick layer of rime instantly formed, freezing the boiling blood-iron solid. Steam billowed, blinding everyone to the trapped youth within. The vile, metallic stench was replaced by the crisp, clean scent of ozone.
Wei Changge roared, enraged. “You ignorant child! You think a mere frost spell can stop this? My masterpiece, eighteen years in the making!” He lunged, his hand crackling with dark energy, but Yuchen was already moving, her frost-sword meeting his attack with a blinding flash of azure light. Their colliding strikes sent shockwaves through the vault, fracturing masonry. The frozen vat groaned, a deep, resonant rumble echoing from within its icy shell. The rime began to shudder, spiderweb cracks spreading further. Then, with a concussive blast that ripped through the vault, the blood-iron cauldron exploded from the inside out. Shards of obsidian and frozen blood-iron flew outwards like shrapnel, tearing through the air, embedding themselves in the stone walls. The cloud of steam and ice shards dissipated, revealing the wreckage. Standing amidst the shattered remains, his tattered robes still clinging to his form, was Jin Zhaoyuan. His skin, no longer dissolving, was a canvas of raw power. His eyes, though, were the most terrifying. One blazed with a terrifying, ancient crimson fire, swirling with the essence of pure corruption, while the other glowed with a pristine, ethereal blue, cold and serene as starlight.
