The Arena of Heavenly Mandate

“Dual-cultivate with her?” Zhaoyuan’s inner voice was a raw snarl, utterly disbelieving. He ripped his hand away from Ling Yuchen’s, the residual cold clinging like a frostbite. The clang of his ceremonial sword dropping onto the polished stone was startlingly loud in the sudden silence of the Plaza of Azure Zenith. He barely registered the stunned faces in the gathered crowd, their murmurs muffled against the wind. His entire being pulsed with a searing heat, a furious rejection of Huo Tu’s outrageous proposition. *“Are you insane? She tried to cut my throat! And you want me to… to entwine with her cultivation?”* *“Heh heh heh! That’s the beauty of it, boy! Her lethal Frost-Marrow needs a potent yang counter, and your demonic curse… it’s a parasitic fire, a twisting, consuming blaze that only true, pure yang essence can scour. Your unique fire-attuned meridians, forged by my supreme elixir, are the perfect furnace! Her Yin-aligned spiritual root, combined with your Yang, will create a unique resonance, a powerful alchemical reaction that could cleanse both your afflictions! It’s either that, or you become a human pill for your uncle, and she becomes a frozen statue!”* Huo Tu’s cackle was almost manic. Zhaoyuan glared at Ling Yuchen. Her gaze, usually cold marble, betrayed sharp shock, a glint of fear, and stubborn pride. She met his stare, her hand instinctively going to the hilt of her main sword, though her backup blade still lay at his feet. A profound unease settled in Zhaoyuan’s gut. The thought of entwining with *anyone*, let alone this infuriating, beautiful swordswoman, churned his stomach. He would never accept charity, never show weakness. But the alternative… the insidious poison from Wei Changge, the constant threat of being refined alive… Before he could voice his furious refusal, a stern voice boomed across the plaza. “Jin Zhaoyuan! Ling Yuchen! Your unauthorized duel has disrupted the opening ceremony. While your talent is undeniable, rules must be upheld. Jin Zhaoyuan, for violating the Pavilion’s decree against internal duels, you shall face a disciplinary challenge in the Arena of Heavenly Mandate!” It was Elder Shen, his face a mask of cold authority. Zhaoyuan’s eyes narrowed. A disciplinary challenge was no ordinary sparring match. It was a brutal, often crippling, affair where older students could punish juniors under the guise of upholding order. And the Arena of Heavenly Mandate was precisely where Wei Changge had subtly suggested Zhaoyuan be placed. “The Arena awaits!” Elder Shen gestured with a dismissive wave. “Proceed immediately!” Zhaoyuan scoffed, retrieving his own sword. He didn't need a map; the roars from the arena were a constant, bloodthirsty backdrop to the Pavilion. He glanced once more at Ling Yuchen. Her expression was unreadable, but a faint flush had risen on her cheeks. He turned sharply, his crippled leg no longer faltering, and stalked towards the arena entrance, the mischievous Baozi, clinging contentedly to his collar, occasionally spitting a tiny spark of lightning. *** The air in the Arena of Heavenly Mandate was thick with the scent of sweat, dust, and fresh blood. The tiered stands, carved into the mountain's granite ribs, howled with bloodthirsty spectators. Zhaoyuan stepped onto the circular platform, the coarse sand crunching under his boots. Sunlight, filtered through the immense barrier overhead, cast warped shadows across the bloodstained floor. His opponent lumbered into view, a mountain of a brawler shouting his name as Garan Stonefist of Granite Mountain Peak. Garan was easily two heads taller than Zhaoyuan, his entire body encased in plate armor forged from Dark Iron, heavy gauntlets clanking with every step. A heavy maul, its head etched with jagged runes, rested across his neck. Garan's martial aura rippled with early Spirit-Nourishing force, an entire tier above Zhaoyuan's nascent Foundation-Building. Zhaoyuan knew this was no ordinary 'disciplinary' match. He could feel the raw intent to cripple emanating from Garan. *“That brute was paid handsomely by that vixen Bai Muwan,”* Huo Tu hissed in Zhaoyuan’s mind. *“She wants you utterly broken, boy. But you’re not going to let her have the satisfaction, are you?”* Zhaoyuan’s lips curled into a mirthless smile. “Come then, brute. Let’s see if your armor is as thick as your skull.” Garan roared, a sound like grinding stone, and charged, swinging his maul down like a falling boulder. Zhaoyuan, instead of meeting the blow, moved with unexpected agility, slipping sideways, a blur of motion. The hammer slammed into the arena floor, cracking the stone and sending dust billowing. Zhaoyuan launched a precise kick at Garan’s knee, but the Dark Iron armor repelled it with a dull thud. His fire qi flared, but the sinister whispers within his core intensified, causing his meridians to seize. *“Damnation! The curse is acting up!”* Zhaoyuan grimaced, dodging another sweeping strike. He could feel the insidious cold trying to extinguish his internal flames. Garan pressed forward like an iron battering ram, shoving Zhaoyuan toward the stone rim. “Time to pay for your insolence, cripple!” Garan bellowed, raising his weapon for a skull-cracking downward smash. The surrounding crowd roared, sensing the end. Just as the hammer began its descent, a silvery flash arced through the air. A frost-sheathed sword, unmistakably Ling Yuchen’s backup blade, spun end-over-end, landing point-down directly in front of Zhaoyuan, its hilt vibrating. The crowd gasped. Zhaoyuan’s eyes darted to the stands, where Ling Yuchen stood, her face pale but her gaze resolute, her primary blade still sheathed at her hip. She had thrown her sword for him. A flicker of something akin to reluctant respect crossed Zhaoyuan’s face. He snatched the hilt, the frigid cold of the blade shocking his palm. His mind raced. Ice and fire. Huo Tu’s words echoed. He had to risk it. With a savage yell, Zhaoyuan channeled his unstable fire qi into the frost-blade, the dual energies screaming in protest as they collided. A volatile, shimmering aura erupted around the sword. He met Garan's descending iron, not with a block, but with a precise upward thrust aimed directly at the carved runes. The force of the impact was immense, but the true devastation came from the elemental clash. *BOOM!* A blinding explosion of ice and fire ripped outwards. The runes on the iron head fractured, the haft groaning under the strain. The Dark Iron armor, designed to withstand physical blows, was not immune to such an alchemical assault. Cracks spiderwebbed across Garan’s breastplate, glowing with an infernal orange and an ethereal blue. The shockwave drove Garan back, his heavy frame recoiling as plates of metal disintegrated into steaming shrapnel. He crashed to the ground, a guttural groan escaping his lips, his skin scalded and frostbitten simultaneously. His eyes, wide with disbelief and pain, stared up at Zhaoyuan, who stood amidst the dissipating smoke, the frost-sword still humming with residual energy. “Get out of my sight,” Zhaoyuan snarled, kicking a shard of Garan’s shattered armor. Garan, completely humiliated and injured, scrambled to his feet and fled the arena, the crowd’s jeers following him like a physical blow. The arena fell silent, then erupted in a deafening roar of astonishment and wild cheers. Zhaoyuan had not merely won; he had broken an elite fighter's prized defense to splinters. Wei Changge, Zhaoyuan’s adoptive uncle, strode into the arena, a beaming smile plastered across his face, his robes fluttering gently. He moved with an effortless grace, projecting an aura of benevolent pride. He seized Zhaoyuan by the collarbone, pulling him into a tight embrace. “Nephew! A magnificent victory! Truly, the Jin clan prodigy has returned!” His voice was resonant, filled with public admiration. As he pulled back, his knuckles grazed Zhaoyuan's neck with barely perceptible pressure. Zhaoyuan felt a sudden, sharp prick, like a mosquito bite, but when he pulled away, there was nothing visible. Wei Changge’s smile did not waver, but his eyes held a calculating glint that Zhaoyuan now recognized as pure malice. *“Heh heh heh! That’s no mosquito bite, boy! That’s a Demonic Shadow Parasite! He’s just planted a tracking device on you. A living tag, clinging to your spiritual essence. He doesn’t want to lose his precious human pill.”* Before Zhaoyuan could process Huo Tu’s chilling revelation, a thunderous *CRACK* ripped through the arena. The colossal gates, built to repel high-tier martial artists, blasted inward in a spray of splintered timber and twisted iron. A suffocating stench of corrupted qi, bitter and ancient, washed over the arena, choking the stands into silence. All eyes turned to the gaping maw where the gates once stood. From the swirling dust and shadows, a terrifying figure descended. Cloaked in tattered black robes that seemed to absorb the very light around him, his face was hidden beneath a cowl, but the sheer oppressive power radiating from him made even the elders in the stands pale. His voice, a rasping growl that echoed with untold age and malice, reverberated through the stunned silence. “I have come for the Jin heir. Hand him over for refinement.”
