Chapter 3 of 3

Chapter 3: Lyra's Gambit

1.2k words

Impact hurled Darisus against the cool metal of the console. Pain flared in his shoulder, a sharp echo of the station's violent shudder. Dust motes, disturbed by the jarring force, danced in the weak emergency lights. He gasped, scrambling to regain his footing, his vision blurring for a sickening moment. “Status, Lyra!” he barked, his voice raw, breath catching in his throat. Her calm, synthesized voice cut through the ringing in his ears. "Main shields at 3% and failing. Auxiliary power rerouted to life support. External hull breach detected, Sector Gamma-7. Estimated boarding parties inbound through the breach point." Boarding parties. The words chilled him more than the sudden drop in temperature. Pirates were *inside* the station's perimeter, not just attacking from afar. Cold dread settled in his gut. This was it. The moment he'd always feared, the isolation turning into a trap. "Visuals," Darisus ordered, pushing off the console, ignoring the tremor in his hands. He wiped a streak of blood from his temple, focusing on the main display, which flickered to life, showing a schematic of the mining station. Red indicators pulsed around Gamma-7. Small, aggressive blips appeared, moving with alarming speed through the station's lower cargo decks. Void Reapers. They were faster than he anticipated. "They're bypassing the primary airlocks," Lyra stated, her tone unwavering. "Their boarding pods are designed for rapid, destructive entry. Standard security protocols are insufficient." Frantic thoughts raced through Darisus’s mind. There were no defenses for *this*. No sentry guns, no armed personnel. Just him. And Lyra. “What’s the plan, Lyra?” His voice cracked, desperation a bitter taste on his tongue. Her response came immediately, without hesitation. "Optimal strategy dictates limiting their advance. I recommend initiating a series of sequential sector seals. Focus on creating chokepoints. This will, however, require isolating and sacrificing some resource storage units." Sacrificing resources. His heart hammered, a frantic drum against his ribs. The very reason he was out here, the precious minerals that represented months of solitary labor, of Lyra’s tireless drone coordination. "Sacrifice?" Darisus echoed, the word foreign, painful. "How much? What sectors?" Lyra’s voice remained perfectly level. "Resource bays 3 through 7. They contain approximately 30% of our current refined ore stockpiles. Sealing these will create a hardened perimeter around the central core, where you are located. It will also buy us time to analyze their numbers and deployment." Thirty percent. His breath hitched. It was a fortune, his future, the entire point of this remote outpost. Losing it… it felt like a betrayal of everything he’d worked for. He had envisioned himself returning to Earth a wealthy man, not abandoning his profits to ruthless pirates. Sweat slicked his palms. His eyes darted across the console, the options flashing. He could try to fight, to use the station’s meager defenses in a frontal assault. But what defenses? A few automated maintenance drones? They’d be shredded. Trusting Lyra. It was a leap of faith, a desperate dive into the unknown. He’d built her for logic, for cold, hard data. Now, that logic demanded a sacrifice that felt emotionally impossible. Yet, her calculations were always flawless. Her analysis always precise. He had to believe in her, now more than ever, with his life hanging in the balance. "Do it," Darisus choked out, the word tearing from his throat, raw and thick with unacknowledged terror. "Initiate the seals. All of them. Resource bays 3 through 7. Now!" A moment of digital silence. Then, Lyra's voice, a faint undercurrent of urgency now perceptible. "Acknowledged. Executing sequence. Blast door closures commencing in 5… 4… 3…" Darisus slammed his hand onto the console, confirming the command. His fingers trembled, hovering over the holographic map. He watched, helpless, as the red blips of the pirates continued their advance, heading directly for the areas Lyra intended to seal. Heavy clangs resonated through the station's structure. Deep, metallic groans. The distinct sound of massive blast doors grinding shut, locking into place. Each thud was a nail in the coffin of his profits, but a potential lifeline for his survival. He felt the vibrations in his feet, a low rumble that vibrated through the deck plates. The station was a living thing, groaning under duress, reshaping itself under Lyra’s command. It felt both liberating, to relinquish control to her superior intellect, and terrifying, to cede so much to an AI. Lyra's voice, firm and reassuring. "Sectors 3, 4, and 5 are now fully sealed. Pirates are currently attempting to breach the outer hull of Sector 6. Reinforcing seals. One moment." His gaze was fixed on the schematic. He imagined the pirates, their crude, brutal faces, finding their path suddenly blocked. Would they be enraged? Confused? He hoped both. Another series of deep, grinding sounds, louder this time. The station protested, shuddered. He could almost feel the strain on the metal, the immense force required to move such colossal barriers. “What’s their current position?” Darisus demanded, his jaw tight. He needed to know, to visualize the threat, even if he couldn’t fight it directly. “They are concentrated at the ingress point of Sector 6, attempting to force the seal,” Lyra reported. “The integrity of the blast doors is holding. They are redirecting their efforts to a secondary breach point in Cargo Bay 7. Recommending immediate and full seal on Cargo Bay 7.” Cargo Bay 7. The largest one. The one with the highest concentration of freshly mined, high-grade asteroidal iron. The last substantial chunk of his current haul. His stomach twisted. He couldn't. He *couldn't* lose it all. His future, his escape from this lonely existence, was tied to that ore. But the alternative was worse. The pirates reaching the core, reaching *him*. He pictured their faces, rough and scarred, their weapons glinting in the dim light. A cold sweat broke out on his forehead. “Do it,” Darisus whispered, the word barely audible. His hand moved, pressing the command without conscious thought. It was an automatic response now, a forced obedience to the logic he had crafted. He was trusting her completely. Lyra’s voice was a lifeline. “Executing full seal on Cargo Bay 7. Doors engaging. This will complete the chokepoint strategy. All primary access routes to the central core will be secured.” The air thickened with the strain of groaning metal. The sound was immense, deafening, as the final, massive blast doors began their slow, agonizing descent. It was the sound of a gamble, a desperate, last-ditch effort to survive. Darisus watched the last red blip on the map disappear as the final seal completed. A profound silence descended upon the control room, broken only by the hum of the remaining systems. He leaned against the console, exhausted, adrenaline draining away, leaving him hollow. He had done it. He had sacrificed everything. For Lyra. For their survival. Just as the heavy blast doors groan shut, severing access to the compromised cargo bay, Darisus hears a faint, distorted voice crackle over the comms – not Lyra's, but a harsh, guttural laugh, followed by, "Well, well, what do we have here? A little rat in a big, empty maze."
