Chapter 1: Scarlet Gauntlet Initiation

Sweat stung Eryan’s eyes. His chest heaved, each breath a ragged gasp tearing at his throat. He tasted dust, metallic tang of his own exertion, and the cloying, putrid scent of fear. Not his own, not entirely. The fear belonged to the creature before him, a hulking mass of mottled grey hide and raw muscle, its stubby, bone-like horns already cracked and chipped from previous encounters. Its name was Runt Beast. A misnomer, really. It stood taller than Eryan, its forelegs ending in crude, blunt claws that gouged the cracked earth with primal fury. Crimson drool dripped from its exposed fangs, glinting in the harsh, late-afternoon sun. Eryan clutched his blade. Not a fine weapon. Just scavenged steel, crudely sharpened, wrapped at the hilt with strips of worn leather. It vibrated in his trembling hand, a testament to the raw energy coursing through him. He ducked. The Runt Beast’s charge was predictable, a brutish lunge designed to crush. Eryan rolled, dust erupting around him, the beast’s massive head missing him by a hair’s breadth. A flash of blue text overlaid his vision. <Runt Beast> <Weakness Identified: Cranial Plate - Moderate Damage> <Weakness Identified: Exposed Jugular - Critical Damage (Requires precise strike)> <Weakness Identified: Unprotected Mandible Joint - Vital Damage (Requires forceful impact)> His System. His only real advantage. It had saved his life more times than he could count, turning every monstrous encounter into a cold, calculated equation. His mind processed the data, filtering out the noise of his own racing heart. Exposed Jugular was too risky. The beast’s neck was thick, muscled. He needed an opening, a moment of vulnerability it wouldn't offer easily. Cranial Plate was already damaged, but further damage would only slow it, not stop it. Unprotected Mandible Joint. A risky move. It meant getting close, dangerously close. But the System highlighted it. A deep, angry red. Vital. He sprang. Not with grace, but with desperate, practiced economy of motion. His boots skidded on loose gravel, propelling him forward as the Runt Beast turned, its small, piggy eyes narrowing. It let out a guttural roar, a challenge, a warning. Eryan ignored it. He focused. The blade, dull by most standards, became an extension of his will. He aimed for the specific point the System had painted for him, just beneath the corner of its jaw, where bone met sinew in a vulnerable seam. Its head snapped down, attempting to bite, to tear him apart. He plunged the blade. Not a clean cut. More of a violent, wrenching stab. The scavenged steel grated against bone, then tore through soft tissue. A gush of hot, scarlet blood erupted, splattering his face, coating his clothes in a sticky, metallic spray. The Runt Beast shrieked. A sound of agony, of surprise. It thrashed, its powerful body convulsing, sending Eryan stumbling backward. Its claws tore at the air, missing him by inches. <Weakness Identified: Cranial Plate - Vital Damage!> Wait. Cranial Plate? He hadn't aimed there. Then he realized. The force of his desperate thrust, combined with the beast’s downward lunge, had driven the blade up, through the mandibular joint, and into the base of its skull. A lucky hit. A brutal, messy, lucky hit. He watched, panting, as the Runt Beast shuddered. Its limbs spasmed, its eyes rolled back, and with a final, choked gurgle, it collapsed. A cloud of dust rose around its massive form, then settled. Silence. Only his own ragged breathing disturbed the air. His hands still trembled, but a grim satisfaction bloomed in his chest. A victory. Another one. It was always a victory. Yet, it was tinged with the familiar bitterness of his own precarious existence. Survival meant constant struggle. Always. He wiped a hand across his blood-slicked face, then moved to the fallen beast. No time for sentimentality. He needed proof. He needed the beast core. Carefully, he began to work, his scavenged blade chipping away at the Runt Beast’s hide, exposing the cavity where the beast core would reside. The sun dipped lower, painting the horizon in hues of orange and deep purple. He had to reach the Academy before nightfall. Hours later, his pack heavier, his body aching, Eryan saw it. Académie des Épreuves Mortelles. It rose from the scarred landscape like a titan, its colossal iron gates a dark maw in its formidable, buttressed walls. The stone, a deep, obsidian grey, seemed to absorb the last vestiges of twilight, making the structure appear even more imposing, more ancient. He wasn't the only one. A trickle of other figures, some looking just as ragged and weary as he felt, others preternaturally composed, converged towards the gates. They were all here for the same reason. To prove themselves. To survive. His core wound, a deep-seated fear of powerlessness, gnawed at him. This Academy promised power. It promised control. It promised a path away from the scrounging, the constant fear of not having enough, of being cast aside. He had clawed his way here, bled for this chance. He wouldn't fail. Slowly, he joined the silent queue. The air crackled with unspoken tension, with ambition, with a primal hunger for ascension. No one spoke. They simply waited, their eyes fixed on the immense gates. Eventually, his turn came. A heavily armored guard, face obscured by a spiked helm, merely grunted, gesturing him through a smaller, reinforced side door. Eryan stepped inside. The courtyard was vast, paved with dark, smooth stone that reflected the last embers of the sky. Buildings, impossibly tall and angular, loomed on all sides, their windows like watchful eyes. He felt small. Insignificant. But a spark of defiance flickered within him. He was here. He had made it. A wave of new recruits milled about, some looking overwhelmed, others determined. There were a few who carried themselves with an air of inherited privilege, their clothes finer, their weapons gleaming. Eryan ignored them. His focus remained internal, on the cold, hard logic of survival. He took a deep breath, the air here different, cleaner, but also heavier. Charged with expectation. He was inside. The first hurdle cleared. Now, the real fight began. --- As the Academy's towering gates groan shut behind him, sealing his entry, a chilling, disembodied voice whispers directly into his mind: "Welcome, new recruit. Your first 'Trial of Blood' begins at dawn. Failure is… irreversible."
