Chapter 4 of 10

A Reluctant Rescue

1.6k words

The multi-limbed horror shrieked, a sound that grated bone. Its chitinous form, black as polished obsidian and slick with dark ichor, heaved itself further into the chamber, unfolding segmented limbs that scraped against rock. One elongated appendage, tipped with a razor-sharp talon, whipped through the air, aimed directly at Feng Xiaoyue’s neck. The speed was inhuman, a blur against the deepening gloom. Xiaoyue, caught off balance from her failed strike, barely registered the attack. A cold dread, far more potent than her usual composure, seized her. She saw the glint of the talon, felt the wind of its passage, but her body, still locked in the aftermath of her lunge, couldn't respond. This was death, swift and brutal, here in the heart of the mist-choked hollow. Then, a low, drawn-out sigh rippled through the cold air near her. It was heavy with irritation, a profound weariness that seemed to challenge the very concept of existence. Shen Mo, who had held his crooked, low crouch, straightened with a slow, deliberate grace. The movement was effortless, a ripple of dark power that barely disturbed the thickening vapors. “Must you always make things so… noisy?” he murmured, his voice a silken whisper that nonetheless cut through the ear-splitting shriek. His eyes, usually half-lidded with apathy, now held a flicker of something primordial and terrible. He did not turn his head toward the monstrous claw hurtling toward Xiaoyue. His hand, slender and pale, lifted just an inch, then his index finger lazily extended. It was a gesture so casual, so dismissive, that it felt like an insult to the ravenous creature. He showed no focus, gathering no energy with a flourish. He simply *flicked* it. A pulse of pure, unadulterated gloom, not unlike the dense fog around them but infinitely more potent, erupted from his fingertip. It wasn't a beam, nor a bolt. A silent, crushing surge crashed into the beast's approaching talon. The chitinous limb, formidable enough to cleave stone, refused to merely splinter or crack. It simply *vaporized*. In its place, a momentary void hung, then the air rushed in to fill it with a sickening *whoosh*. The creature shrieked again, a sound of agony and primordial surprise. But Shen Mo wasn't done. The dark arc continued, tearing through the beast's remaining limbs, then its torso, bisecting its many eyes, and finally, its head. The massive brute, which moments ago seemed an unstoppable force of nature, unravelled. It dissolved, limb by limb, segment by segment, into swirling motes of dark dust that dispersed into the damp air, leaving behind only the heavy, sweet-rotting scent of the depths. Yet the dark force drove forward. It ploughed onward, a straight, narrow furrow through the bed-stone behind where the brute had stood. The ground trembled, a low rumble echoing through the stalagmite’s hollowed core. A trench, fifty paces long and two paces deep, appeared in the stone floor, clean and precise, as if carved by a god’s scalpel. Dust rained from the ceiling, carrying with it the unsettling whisper of unseen things. Xiaoyue stood frozen, her breath caught in her throat. The icy air of the cave felt almost mild compared to the raw, untamed force that had just erupted nearby. Her eyes, wide with shock, traced the impossible trench. A beast that could have slaughtered a dozen elders, annihilated with a casual flick. And the source of that power stood beside her, yawning. “There,” Shen Mo mumbled, rubbing his eye with the back of his hand, as if the exertion of carving a chasm through the mountain had been nothing more than a minor inconvenience. “Now perhaps I can find a less… disturbed place for a nap.” The air grew dense, the fumes coiling around them, heavier than before. The destruction of the fiend seemed to have agitated the very marrow of the cavern. A faint, glowing haze, pulsing with a faint indigo light, began to settle. It was a more virulent form of the mist, known to corrode spiritual energy and induce a suffocating paralysis. “The… the mist is thickening,” Xiaoyue managed to stammer, her voice hoarse. A sharp pain lanced through her left collar where the fiend's ichor had splattered, a burning sensation that began to numb her arm. She instinctively tried to draw on her cultivation, but the effort felt like pulling teeth, her meridians sluggish and unresponsive. Shen Mo glanced over, his gaze settling on the purple-black stain creeping along her clavicle, already leeching into the pale flesh. A flicker of something, not concern, but perhaps a minor annoyance, crossed his face. “Hmph. Void-born blight. A rather inefficient way to die, I must say,” a seductive voice purred directly into Shen Mo’s mind, carrying a hint of amusement. Huan Meilan’s ethereal form shimmered into existence beside him, visible only to his senses. She regarded Xiaoyue with a mischievous glint in her spectral eyes. “Unless, of course, our little ice queen here prefers a slow, agonizing descent into madness? It *would* be rather amusing to watch.” Xiaoyue swayed, the miasma pressing in. Her vision blurred at the edges. The cold seeping into her marrow was no longer just the mountain chill, but the poison’s insidious touch. She watched Shen Mo, fear tangled with a desperate hope blooming in her chest. His presence, despite the overwhelming power he’d just displayed, felt strangely… warm. Indeed, as the haze intensified, Shen Mo’s frame began to emanate a faint, dark aura, almost imperceptible to the naked eye. It wasn’t a destructive force now, but a soft, enveloping warmth that seemed to push back the encroaching indigo fog, creating a small, breathable bubble around them. Xiaoyue, without even realizing it, leaned slightly into the comfort, a small, involuntary sigh escaping her lips as the cold receded. “It’s simple, my dearest,” Meilan’s voice echoed in Shen Mo’s mind, dripping with mock sympathy. “A kiss of shadow, skin to skin. The poison, you see, is not unlike a parasite seeking a host. You merely persuade it that *you* are a far more appealing host. And then… you expel it. A rather intimate little dance, wouldn’t you agree?” She winked, her spectral lips curving into a dangerous smile. Shen Mo’s eyes narrowed, the skin taut over his cheekbones. “You enjoy this far too much,” he muttered under his breath, barely audible. He looked at Xiaoyue, who trembled openly, her porcelain features pinched with pain and the raw dread of impending demise. “I’m not… I can’t…” Xiaoyue stammered, trying to lift her poisoned arm, but it hung limp. The world around her spun. She was a perfectionist, always in control, always prepared. To be this helpless, this vulnerable, in front of the lazy outcast she despised… it was unbearable. Yet, the warmth radiating from him was her only refuge. Shen Mo sighed again, a sound of supreme resignation. He reached out, his fingers light as they hovered over the blackened wound. The dark energy that shielded them from the noxious fog intensified slightly at his touch, settling like warm silk. Xiaoyue flinched, not from pain, but from the sudden, unexpected intimacy. Her cheeks flushed, a stark contrast to her usually pallid complexion. “Hold still,” Shen Mo commanded, his voice devoid of emotion, yet with an underlying authority that brooked no argument. He knelt slightly, bringing his face closer to the corrupted flesh. The faint, musky scent of loam and age, dangerous yet deeply steadying, filled her senses. Her heart, which had been racing from fear, now thrummed with a different, more unsettling rhythm. He pressed his lips to the purpling skin just above her collarbone. It wasn't a kiss of affection, but a cold, precise seal. A gasp escaped Xiaoyue’s lips, her entire body tensing. A searing cold, followed by a rush of heat, flooded her upper arm, a battle waging beneath her skin. She felt a distinct, sucking sensation, as if something was being drawn out of her, something vile and corrupt. Air locked tight in her throat, her stare locked blankly on the dark rock. Her mind raced, a confusing maelstrom of humiliation, shock, and a strange, bewildering sense of… relief? Then, with a faint, almost inaudible pop, Shen Mo pulled away. A small, glistening droplet of thick, black ichor, now concentrated and writhing like a trapped serpent, clung to his lower lip. Without a trace of disgust, he flicked it away into the miasma, where it instantly dissolved into nothingness. The purple blight on Xiaoyue’s neck had vanished, replaced by smooth, unblemished skin, though a faint blush remained, reaching up to her ears. Xiaoyue stared at him, breathless. The numbness and pain were entirely gone. But her mind was reeling. The casual intimacy, the raw power, the infuriating nonchalance… it was all too much. She wanted to scream at him, to rage against the violation, yet a part of her, a deep, primal part, felt… strangely protected. Confused. Her usual icy certainty shattered, replaced by a bewildering warmth. “There,” Shen Mo said again, as if he’d merely brushed a speck of dust from her clothes. “That should hold. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I truly need that nap.” He turned to leave, but then paused, his gaze fixed on the spot where the Abyssal Shadow had dissolved. Where the colossal brute had imploded, a faint, iridescent light now pulsed on the stone floor. It was not the chaotic glow of nascent poison mists, but a deliberate, geometric pattern. A sigil. It was intricate, ancient, and undeniably potent. As Shen Mo watched, the sigil grew brighter, etching itself into the very stone. His hand instinctively went to his chest, tracing the faint, jagged scar just above his heart – a mark he’d carried since childhood, a memento of Elder Kuang’s cruel ministrations. The sigil on the ground pulsed once more, mirroring the throbbing ache in his old wound. It was the exact same symbol.
