Chapter 7 of 10
Prep Time Under Fire

A draft sharper than industrial coolant crept into the fallout bunker. The air, already thick with the scent of seared cyber-beast and shattered metal, began to thin. The flickering neon signs, usually a chaotic symphony of magenta and viridian, sputtered. One by one, they winked out, plunging the cavernous space into deeper shadow. Danica, still wiping a smear of what she insisted was ‘flavor-enhanced drone residue’ from her apron, frowned. Not at the escalating darkness, but at the way her customers, now huddled around the remaining functional tables, started to cough, their lungs working thin.
“This won’t do,” she declared, her voice cutting through the growing quiet. “A truly exquisite dining experience demands a vibrant atmosphere, crisp air, and satisfied diners. This… this feels like a poorly ventilated back alley after a cheap street brawl!” She slapped her hand on a dented prep table, a clang that echoed in the heavy silence.
Soren, who had just managed to re-sheathe his concealed vibro-knife, watched the intake vents rattle. “Danica, the Ascendancy isn’t just sending scout drones anymore. They’re shutting down the life support. The oxygen scrubbers. They’re cutting off our air.”
Piotr, who had been attempting to clean a particularly stubborn scorch mark with a damp rag, dropped it, fingers slack. “Cut the air? But… but the staff meal hasn’t even been served yet! How can they do that?”
Danica ignored Soren’s explanation, her attention already diverted. “Stifling the room? That’s like trying to cook a soufflé in a vacuum-sealed jar! Utterly uncivilized!” She scanned the walls, her eyes narrowing on a corroded metal grate high above. “No, no. They won’t get away with ruining my establishment’s ambiance. Not on my watch!” She grabbed a discarded drone arm, still warm from its recent meltdown, and used it to pry open a maintenance hatch near the vent.
Inside, a dizzying vertical shaft, choked with decades of grime, stretched upward. A faint, distant hum resonated from its depths. “Aha!” Danica exclaimed, a triumphant grin splitting her face. “The old ventilation spine! It’s still connected! This must lead all the way up… to the Upper Sprawl, perhaps even the Imperial Citadel itself!” She imagined the pure, crisp air of the surface, a stark contrast to the stagnant air of the Gloomward. “They want to cut off our air? Fine! We’ll just force them to give it back!”

Danica slammed a fist against her cutting block. “Only one dish is powerful enough to achieve such a feat: Hellfire Broth! A soup so devastatingly spicy, so aggressively aromatic, it will clear out every sinus, every airway, every… *palace* it encounters!” She slammed the drone arm down, pointing at Soren and Piotr. “You two! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to acquire the rarest, most potent chili pods known to the underworld! I’ll need at least a dozen of the ‘Dragon’s Flare’ varietal, no less!”
Soren blinked. “Nightshade pods? To smoke out the palace?” The sheer absurdity was almost enough to make him laugh, but the determined fire in Danica’s eyes was infectious. He nodded. “Understood. Piotr, you’re with me. We know a vendor in the Whispering Labyrinth district.”
Piotr, still reeling, scrambled to retrieve his comm-bead, then remembered it was deep-fried. “Uh, right! Nightshade pods! The spicy ones! For… for breathing!”
As they geared up, a guttural roar echoed from the street outside. Grandmaster Orok, who had slipped out earlier to secure some ‘prime fermenting agents’ for his next spicy craving, staggered into the reinforced blast doors. He was a terrifying sight, not because of his usual imposing presence, but because he was *damaged*. His cyber-arm was mangled, sparks sputtering from exposed wiring, and a deep gouge scored his armored torso. He staggered, clenching a blood-stained sack in his good hand, his vocal synthesizer wheezing in jagged bursts.
“Master Orok!” Danica cried, instantly at his side, her concern not for his wounds, but for the integrity of his ingredient bag. “Is the produce alright? Did you get the ‘Dragon’s Flare’?”
Orok slumped against the doorframe, a low growl rumbling from his chest. “Imperial… patrol. Ambush. Tried… to confiscate… the spice.” He lifted the sack, revealing a handful of dark, gnarled chilies, pulsating with an unnatural, fiery glow. Their scent, even through the failing ventilation, brought caustic moisture to the eyelids. “These… are for your… Hellfire… Broth.” He pushed the sack into Danica’s hands, then slid to the floor, a heavy thud that shook the foundations. His glowing cyber-eyes dimmed.
Just then, a klaxon blared from outside, a guttural, mechanical shriek that vibrated through the very bedrock. The bistro’s single remaining neon sign, a sign that read “Rurik’s Refectory,” flickered one last time and died. Through the reinforced viewport, a colossal silhouette emerged from the swirling fog – the first of several massive, tracked siege engines, their multi-barreled cannons swiveling to face the defiant little restaurant.
