Just Desserts

“What in the… *flavor*… is this?! Who cooked this abominable, yet… *fragrant*… food?!” The dreadnought’s voice, now a strained, guttural roar that still somehow maintained its aristocratic timbre, reverberated through the Gloomward Reaches. The rain of spiced proteins and savory broth splattered against the bunker's reinforced plating, steaming against the hot metal. Above, the gargantuan vessel, still leaking savory effluent from its exhaust ports, began to visibly list. A smaller, sleeker craft detached from its underbelly, a shuttle designed for emergency egress, now descending with an almost comical urgency. [NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHING! SUPREME RULER – VIP STATUS: PENDING!] the System narrator blared, its text shimmering with neon green. Danica Rurik, spatula still clutched in a triumphant grip, narrowed her eyes at the approaching craft. “Hmph! ‘Pending’ is right! No one gets a table in my dining hall without a reservation!” She wiped a streak of broth from her cheek with the back of her hand. The glow of the Endless Banquet Domain faded, the holographic dining hall flickering out, leaving only the dim, cozy chaos of her shop. Soren Vosh, still breathless from the spontaneous kiss and the subsequent spatula-smack, scrambled to his feet. His face, usually a mask of detached severity, was now a canvas of stunned disbelief and burgeoning adoration. He watched the descending pod. “Danica, that’s… that’s High Chancellor Vorlag, the sovereign of the Vossian Ascendancy. He’s never set foot outside his sky-palace! This isn’t a reservation, it’s an invasion!” Piotr, smeared from head to boots in starchy residue, piped up, “Maybe he wants a doggy bag, sir?” He scraped broth off his elbow with a fingernail and tasted it. Grandmaster Orok, his cybernetics sparking faintly, hauled himself up from a pile of collapsed synth-paste barrels. His gaze, usually cold and calculating, held a glint of predatory amusement. “That despot… I haven’t seen the coward in centuries. He’ll make a fine appetizer for the main course.” He cracked his knuckles, the sound like grinding gears. The imperial skiff settled into the soot with a heavy thump, kicking up a cloud of vaporized nutrient paste. The ramp hissed open, revealing a figure clad in obsidian-black ceremonial armor, sleek and devoid of ornamentation, save for the faint glow of integrated energy conduits. The man stepped out, oil-slick hair pasted against his forehead by gravy, his mouth twisted sideways in disbelief. He sniffed the air, a deep, primal inhale, then recoiled as if struck. “*This!*” the ruler roared, voice cracking against the bunker walls. “This… *stench* of cooked flesh! This… *fragrant* desecration of my capital! Who dares defile the sacred purity of Ternograd with… with *real food*?!” His black pupils darted across the street, locking onto Danica, who stood brandishing her spatula. “Oh, you mean *my* cooking?” Danica puffed out her chest. “That was a victory celebration for the successful completion of my final exam! The Gloomward Reaches Purge Protocol? Not on the menu! It’s canceled!” He stared, his jaw twitching as he processed the declaration. “Canceled? You… you *canceled* my Purge Protocol? And you claim this… this *culinary terrorism*… is a ‘victory celebration’?” He took another sniff, the tips of his gauntlets rattling against his greaves. “The aroma… it’s… an affront to all I stand for. Yet…” He closed his eyes, his nostrils flaring. “It reminds me of… of the legends. The old world. My grandmother’s stories of… *fried dough*.” His voice dropped to a wistful whisper. “I demand to know your secrets! I demand a table! Now!” Danica blinked. “A table? For you, the tyrant who tried to incinerate my customers? Hmph! You’ll be lucky to get on the waiting list! I’m fully booked for the next six months with all the people I had to save from *your* Purge Protocol! But since you’re here, and you just provided the most dramatic climax for my final exam, I suppose I can offer you a… standing reservation for Season 2, after the Galactic Bake-Off.” His mouth dropped open. “Six… six months?! Do you know who I am?!” “I know you’re holding up my staff meeting!” Danica shot back. She turned to Piotr, beaming. “Piotr! Your dedication to staff meals has been exemplary through this whole… *final exam* ordeal! From now on, you’re Head Waiter! You get first dibs on all leftovers, forever!” Piotr sniffled, wiping grease on his sleeve. “Head Waiter? Leftovers? All mine? Thank you, Chef! I’ll protect the stockpot with my life!” He saluted, a stray glob of spiced protein flying from his hand. Soren stepped forward, a soft smile finally gracing his lips. He unclipped the ornate Inquisitor badge from his belt, the polished chrome glinting under the flickering neon. He dropped it into the muck with a dull clink. “Excellency, my resignation is effective immediately. I’ll be staying on as Sous-Chef. And… partner.” He looked over at Danica, whose grin was already splitting her grease-streaked face. The ruler sputtered, tongue catching against his teeth. Before he could recover, a new figure, sleek and arrogant, pushed past him, a minor noble from the capital’s upper spires, Lord Xylos, his pristine robes now dotted with broth. “Out of my way, old man! I smelled actual food! I’m Lord Xylos of the Gilded Spire, and I demand the first available serving! I don’t wait in line for… *refuse* like this rabble!” He tried to push toward the door. Grandmaster Orok stepped out from the doorway's iron shadow, hydraulic servos whining in his chest. He grabbed Lord Xylos by the collar, lifting the flailing noble effortlessly. “Refuse, you say?” Orok’s voice was a low growl. With a single, fluid motion, he hurled the screaming noble into a nearby waste receptacle, slumping into decaying synth-paste boxes with a wet crunch. Orok dusted his hands. “Line forms behind the chief magistrate, *Lord*.” [SEASON 2 ANNOUNCEMENT! PREPARE FOR THE ULTIMATE CULINARY SHOWDOWN! THE GALACTIC BAKE-OFF!] the System narrator thundered, its text now a vibrant, swirling rainbow. Just then, the cracked pavement outside shuddered. A low, humming sound filled the air, growing louder until a gleaming, silvery saucer, unlike any vessel seen in the Vossian Ascendancy, descended from the low-hanging clouds. It settled into the street with a soft thud, its hatch hissing open to reveal a pale glare. From within, a single, slender metallic arm extended, holding aloft a truly ancient, ornate whisk, glowing with an otherworldly energy. Its purpose, and the galactic delights it promised, remained a tantalizing mystery.
