Chapter 10 of 10
Lab Partners for Eternity

“Wait, where is Mo-Mo?” Yaolan’s voice was a mere whisper, thin against the stark whiteness. The all-consuming, logic-driven wave had stripped everything away, leaving behind a cosmos of pure, unblemished nullity. The ground beneath their feet, once the ancient stone of the archives, was now a flat plane of bleached, uncarved marble extending into the horizon. The sky above, previously a blood-red omen, was a pristine, indifferent grey. This was the Realm of Unbound Variables, a universe freshly wiped clean of preordained narratives. Every atom, every mote of dust, was free to choose its own path, unburdened by destiny’s strings.
Zang Weiming, the former Crown Scion, hung limply in the air a dozen paces away, his face still dazed from the loss of his 'Protagonist Halo'. His eyes, however, seemed to have gained a curious, gentle clarity. He floated down, landing softly beside a large, stone gargoyle, which had inexplicably survived the cosmic scrub. With a tender sigh, Zang Weiming reached out and lovingly stroked its cold, craggy cheek. The gargoyle's stony gaze seemed to soften, reflecting a strange, eternal devotion. They were, inexplicably, a picture of domestic bliss.
Yaolan ignored him, her gaze fixed on the lingering haze where the Author of Fate had been. A low, rumbling sound began, not from the ground, but from the empty air itself. It grew, deep and guttural, until the very fabric of the new reality seemed to vibrate. Then, a titanic *BURP* echoed across the endless expanse, shaking the bleached plains. From the dissipating smoke, an enormous, golden-scaled carp, easily a hundred times its original size, gracefully swam into view. Mo-Mo, somehow even more rotund, had swallowed the entire blast. Its scales glowed with a soft, internal luminescence, and a tiny, satisfied sigh escaped its massive, whiskered maw. It looked around, blinked its large, placid eyes, then lazily nudged a shimmering, marble-smooth array flag that had inexplicably appeared in its mouth, offering it to Yaolan.
“Mo-Mo! You’re alright!” Yaolan gasped, relief flooding her. She snatched the flag, her analytical mind already calculating the new energy signature of her companion. Her attention then shifted. Lord Shenjue, who had been groaning faintly, pushed himself up from the ground. A golden light, a faint afterglow of the logic-reset, pulsed around him. His fractured core, his battered body – everything had mended without a scar. He stood tall, his celestial robes unblemished, his gaze burning with an intensity that had lost none of its former adoration.
He approached Yaolan, his steps measured, his expression unreadable to her. He extended a hand, and in his palm rested a ring. It wasn't ornate or flashy, but subtly elegant, forged from what looked like pure starlight, with a single, glowing orb at its center. The orb pulsed with an internal, intricate pattern of light, a miniature galaxy contained within glass. “Bao Yaolan,” he began, his voice a rich, deep timbre, entirely free of strain. “You have, with your unparalleled intellect and relentless pursuit of knowledge, redefined the very fabric of existence. You have unbound us all. With this, I offer you a new tether, one forged by choice, not by fate.”
Yaolan stared at the ring. Her combat-tunnel-vision, usually reserved for deflecting attacks, now fixated on the object in his hand, dissecting its every aspect. She leaned in, her eyes narrowing as she scrutinised the orb. Her fingers, usually stained with ink and array dust, gently traced its surface. “By the Seven Seals of Axiom… the crystalline structure… the energy containment field… it’s flawless!” She snatched the ring from his hand, turning it over and over, examining it from every angle. “The micro-flux conduits, the hyper-dimensional warping – it’s an immaculate spatial-containment construct! A self-sustaining pocket dimension, rock-solid and completely portable!”
Her face, usually a mask of focused intensity, broke into an excited grin. This was not the look of a woman swooning over a lover’s token, but of a researcher discovering an impossible new theorem. “Shenjue,” she declared, her voice ringing with unbridled academic zeal. “This is beyond anything I’ve ever seen! This isn’t merely beautiful; it’s an engineering marvel! With this, we could store entire experimental setups, transport unstable elemental reagents, even create controlled, isolated blast zones for testing volatile formations without risking the local topography!”
She looked up at him, her eyes shining with a purely scientific delight. “This changes everything! No more lugging heavy implements, no more searching for isolated testing grounds! Our workflows will speed up ten times over! Shenjue,” she said, slipping the glowing ring onto her finger, where it settled snug against the knuckle, pulsing with a faint, agreeable light. “We will make excellent lab partners. For eternity.”
Lord Shenjue blinked. His smile, when it came, was slow and radiant, lighting up the pale expanse. His tribulation had indeed become his destiny, though not in the way any celestial sage could have predicted. She had accepted his bond, had declared their partnership eternal, had even worn his ring. This was, in every conceivable way, an absolute win. He nodded, his pupils gleaming with proprietary joy she utterly failed to perceive. “For eternity,” he affirmed, each syllable loaded with quiet pledges she would never decode.
Mo-Mo, floating beside them, nudged another, smaller, round-headed array flag into Yaolan’s hand, then gave a contented burble. Yaolan tucked it away, already outlining new experimental procedures in her mind. “Right then, Shenjue. To the Upper Realm! I’ve been meaning to test the stability of a compressed gravity-nullification array on the Nimbus Cords of the Cloud-Serpent Pass. The local deities should provide excellent baseline readings for environmental stress tolerance!” She clapped her hands together, a dangerous glint in her eyes. “Let’s see if we can finally achieve a stable, orbital research platform!”
Lord Shenjue, still smiling, strode beside her, his hand lightly resting on the small of her back. The two of them, the ruthless array-master and the enamored deity, walked purposefully across the new, blank cosmos, leaving behind the happily married Crown Scion and his gargoyle. As they ascended towards the newly formless heavens, a distant, terrified scream echoed from the Upper Realm. A new era had begun, an era of pure, unadulterated magical science, and the gods, previously bound by fate, were about to discover a far more chaotic force: an array researcher with bottomless caches of explosives, and a fully supportive, eternally smitten lab partner.
