Chapter 9 of 10

The Loophole of Compassion

697 words

The profound darkness that had swallowed the Obsidian Kiln was not merely the absence of light. It settled like wet slate across the ribcage of the mountain. Above, the veil of the world tore like rotting silk. Jagged rents of raw void appeared, screaming fissures that bled a sickly green light, and through them, the abyssal gnashing of unseen horrors echoed, a sound that flayed the mind. The very air thickened, becoming molasses, then stone, then something colder and sharper than ice. Zong Kuang lay sprawled on the cold stone floor, not by choice but by force. The gravitational pull of the unraveling realm was immense, pinning him like an insect under a mountain. His divine form, once impervious, now felt like a leaden shell. He tried to push himself up, a grunt of raw effort escaping his lips, but his limbs refused to obey. He had been a god, and now he was less than dust, incapable of even lifting a hand as the world prepared to die. Beside him, Feng Yancheng sucked in bile-slick spit. He scrabbled at the ground, nails scraping against obsidian, trying to claw his way towards Zhihe, but the force was too great. His body convulsed, his breath rattling in his throat as the pressure intensified, threatening to crush his bones. Moqiu, colossal and silent, remained curled around the plinth, its three eyes glowing faintly in the gloom, a grotesque guardian. Even its vast bulk seemed to sag under the unseen pressure, its rumbling purr now a low, mournful vibration. Ruan Zhihe stood before the split basin of the Heaven-Mending Crucible, unyielding. The dead ash within lay cold and chalky. Yet, she moved. Her hand, usually so steady, trembled as she reached out, not to the artifact, but to the very door of the furnace itself. The set of her shoulders snapped. Her focus narrowed entirely on the mute spirit behind her, ignoring the unraveling sky. With a strength that defied the crushing atmosphere, she swung the heavy iron furnace door shut, a resounding clang that seemed to challenge the Abyss itself. Then, she turned, her gaze locking onto Gongyi Ren. Her lips, usually a thin, calm line, parted, a soundless plea caught in her throat. She stepped forward, an uncharacteristic urgency in her movements, and placed her palms flat against his chest, as if she could physically absorb him, shield him, even now. “No,” she mouthed, her voice a raw whisper, barely audible above the world’s dying screams. “Not you. There must be… another way. My soul. It is… more than enough. Take mine.” She possessed no instinct to spare her own marrow when a broken vessel sat before her. The compulsion to mend had consumed every safeguard, leaving only the urge to throw her own vital spark into the draft. Gongyi Ren’s spectral edges fractured like sun-baked glaze. He raised a hand, his touch impossibly gentle, and placed it over hers, moving them from his chest. His gaze held steady, clear of grievance. He shook his head, a soft, almost imperceptible movement. Then, leaning forward, he touched his dry lips to her forehead. The contact struck her like fresh charcoal on bare skin—a foreign, sharp sting that demanded nothing of her sealed pulse. Zhihe twitched backward, unaccustomed to any warmth that did not rise from an ember. The corners of his mouth lifted slightly. He raised his hand, tracing the elegant, familiar movements of sign language. His fingers hooked and curved through the draft: *Forge me into something beautiful.* Before Zhihe could catch his sleeve, he turned. Without hesitation, without a backward glance, Gongyi Ren stepped into the yawning, dark maw of the Obsidian Kiln, into the dead ash that now filled the crucible. His ethereal form glowed with a sudden, brilliant light, a final, radiant beacon against the encroaching Abyss. The moment his form touched the cold, inert metal, the split basin shuddered. Then, with a deafening roar that ripped through the very fabric of the collapsing realm, the Heaven-Mending Crucible erupted in a blinding, heaven-piercing light, a column of pure, white brilliance that shot upwards, tearing a perfect, clean hole through the abyssal rents in the sky.
