Chapter 9 of 10
The Crimson Eclipse
938 words
The darkness bore down heavy and dense, pressing against the skin like damp wool. The washhouse vapors, usually a comforting haze, coiled in frantic drafts. Zhai Yan felt a prickle of cold fear, a sensation far more chilling than the icy wind. He gripped his darning needle, its polished tip glinting faintly in the deepening gloom. Miao-Miao clung to his collar, its tiny body trembling. “*She’s done it, Zhai Yan! She’s brought it forward! The altar! We have to go!*”
The sharp iron reek of slaughter sharpened, coating the roof of Zhai Yan's mouth. He hurried past the wooden rinse basins, engaging his Thread-Sight to locate the pale glows of the washhouse drudges. They were all converging, pulled by an unseen force, towards the heart of the sect – the Grand Ancestral Altar, a place forbidden to outcasts.
He burst from the washhouse gates, the sudden expanse of the central plaza opening beneath the eclipsed sky. The eclipse was nearing totality. A sliver of the sun remained, a malicious red eye peering through the encroaching night. And there, in the center of the plaza, stood the Grand Altar of the Cang-Xiu, now transformed into a horrific spectacle.
A massive, cinnabar-tinged circle glowed on the flagged stones, pulsing with malevolent energy. Within its boundaries, dozens of captive washers – the old, the frail, the weary – stood frozen, staring in dread. Their spiritual fibers, thin and fragile, dissolved into the array. At the very nexus of this ritual, Elder Fen-Jiao stood, her opulent crane-and-turtle garment – the ceremonial piece Zhai Yan had prepared – now shimmering with an unnatural, vibrant carmine. Her face, usually a mask of haughty disdain, was alight with cruel ecstasy.
“Foolish commoners!” her voice boomed, amplified by the dark magic. “Did you truly believe your pathetic lives held any value beyond this? To fuel the ascent of your betters?” She threw her head back, a cackle tearing through the oppressive silence. “The Crimson-Qi Robe is nearly complete! The sacrifice is nigh!”
Zhai Yan pushed through the invisible barrier of dread, his battered boots slapping against the flagstones. Miao-Miao let out a desperate chirp. Elder Fen-Jiao’s eyes, gleaming with malevolent power, snapped to him. Recognition, then fury, twisted her features. “You! The little rat from the steam-pits! How dare you defile this sacred space with your presence? You will be the first to be bled dry!” She raised a hand, and a tendril of dark energy snaked towards him.
Zhai Yan didn’t flinch. He walked steadily into the glowing blood-array, the strange energy tickling his skin but finding no purchase. Thread-Sight revealed the intricate network of siphoned lifespans, all converging upon her ceremonial vestment. Along the neckline ran the single master filament he had stitched in secret, glowing with faint, defiant gold.
Elder Fen-Jiao watched him, a slow, contemptuous smile spreading across her lips. “Brave, but utterly useless. Your pathetic interference is over. Soon, the last vestige of the outer sect will be absorbed, and I shall truly become peerless.” She stroked the shimmering weave of her garment, her chin lifted high. “And this flawlessness you promised, little tailor? It is indeed exquisite. The power flowing through me is unprecedented!”
“It serves its true purpose, Elder,” Zhai Yan said, his tone quiet and steady across the stones. A collective gasp rose from the trapped captives. “Designed specifically to unravel everything you took.”
Elder Fen-Jiao froze, her smile faltering. “What insolence is this?”
“When you demanded flawless work,” Zhai Yan continued, stepping closer across the stones, “you left the design to my hands. Balance demands rectifying an excess, restoring what was pillaged.” His gaze locked onto the filament along her neckline. “You wanted an ensemble to swallow lives during this celestial crossing. I simply ensured it would take everything, and then reverse the current at the zenith.”
Miao-Miao let out a triumphant squeak. The pale-faced captives watched with dawning comprehension. Elder Fen-Jiao’s face twisted into a snarl of dawning horror. “You… you *dare*? You altered my most prized possession to betray me?!”
“Betrayal, Elder? Or merely a tailor’s careful hand, mending a tear in the fabric of fate?” With a swift, precise flick, Zhai Yan’s scarred hand whipped forward. His darning needle caught the golden filament nestled in the blood-dyed lapel. He gave it a firm, deliberate tug.
A shrill wail tore from the silks themselves. The cinnabar circle flared violently and shrank back. The shimmering weave around Fen-Jiao sputtered. Strands of white radiance reversed their flight, snapping home into the chests of the washerfolk. The elders gasped, color rushing into sallow cheeks as warmth drove out the chill.
Elder Fen-Jiao screamed, a sound of pure agony and disbelief. The parasitic vestment regurgitated decades of hoarded vitality. Each outbound strand of life force scorched her skin like hot iron. The rich scarlet drained away into bleached grey. The elaborate crane and turtle motifs, once so proud, distorted, their stitches pulling apart with audible pops. Her face, which had been unnaturally youthful, began to sag, lines deepening, her skin wrinkling with horrifying speed. Decades of pilfered youth peeled away, snapping home to the outer-disciples or scattering as the balance settled.
“No! My power! My longevity!” Fen-Jiao clawed at the fraying silk, her fingers catching in frayed knots. The garment was devouring itself, purging her illicit reserves in violent convulsions. The eclipse reached totality, casting the world in a chilling, blood-red gloom, illuminating the Elder’s frantic, desperate struggle as her world, and her cultivation, came undone. The golden filaments Zhai Yan had stitched ran clear and bright through the tatters, snapping each anchor until not one borrowed year remained.
