The Trap is Sprung

The name hung in the damp air, a poison breath. Irineya’s gaze locked with Stellan’s, the raw understanding in his blind eyes mirroring the horror in her own. Ksenia. The architect of the city’s order, the voice of its tradition, the face of its treachery.
“She wouldn’t do this alone,” Irineya stated, the shock hardening into a cold resolve. “Not for a decade, and not now. Who else?”
Stellan let out a low growl, a rumble that vibrated through the stone floor. “Doesn’t matter. We know enough. She’s the root of it all.” His hand closed around her wrist, a gentle but firm pressure. “What now, little cook?”
Irineya thought of the children shriveling in the infirmary cots, their marrow burning away under the contagion. “We give them hope,” she said, her voice gaining strength. “And then we show them the truth.”
They worked through the long, silent night, a strange, grim partnership. Stellan, with his preternatural senses, helped Irineya gather the rare bioluminescent fungi she needed, guiding her through treacherous fissures. He listened to the minute changes in the air, the subtle vibrations of the geode, discerning patterns in the city’s nocturnal rhythms. Matvei, summoned through a coded signal, arrived under the pretense of delivering medicinal tinctures. His expression was a carefully neutral mask, but his eyes held a keen, intelligent spark as Irineya outlined her audacious plan.
“You’re certain she’ll fall for it?” Matvei murmured, his gaze flicking to Stellan, who stood like a silent sentinel by the entrance to the hidden laboratory.
“She has to,” Irineya replied, stirring a simmering concoction in a clay pot. “Her purpose is to hollow the sanctuary out from within. The sickness is her crowning stroke. If I claim to possess an antidote, she cannot let it stand. She’ll come for me herself.”
“It’s a fragile gamble,” Matvei observed, genuine respect sharpening his tone. “And if it fails?”
“Then we die fighting for something real,” Stellan’s voice cut in, low and unyielding. “Not by Ksenia’s slow poison.”
Dawn down below brought no rising sun, only the gradual brightening of the central geode vault as the pale, crystalline moss pulsed with renewed luminescence. A growing crowd gathered, drawn by the frantic shouts of town criers, spreading news of Irineya’s desperate announcement. She stood on a raised platform near the central spring, a simple wooden table before her, a single vial of the glowing, viscous liquid resting upon it. Stellan stood behind her, his bulk a wall of corded sinew, shoulders square and unyielding.
“Citizens!” Irineya’s call cut clear across the stone, amplified by the resonant curve of the rock faces. “The contagion ravages our children and burns away our Gifts. I have worked tirelessly. I have found a path.” She held up the vial, its contents casting an ethereal gleam on her face. “A cure. I will administer the first dose to the afflicted at the start of the next cycle.”
A ripple of disbelief, then cautious hope, spread through the crowd. Murmurs erupted, questions forming on their lips. Before anyone could voice them, a formidable figure strode through the throng, flanked by two hulking wardens. Elder Ksenia, her face a mask of cold fury, her ornate robes rustling with her swift movement.
“A cure?” Ksenia’s voice, usually a soothing balm, was now a harsh rasp that scraped against the stone. “A lie! This woman, this Lumenguild fugitive, has only brought us misery. She is the source of the plague, a harbinger of ruin!” Her eyes, usually so serene, were sharp with malice as they speared Irineya.
“Irineya of the Ash, you are hereby accused of sedition, of attempting to poison our people, and of consorting with our enemies!” Ksenia declared, her voice sharp with desperation. She gestured to the wardens. “Seize her! And the brute who protects her!”
The two sentries, their iron plates clanking, moved forward. One reached for Irineya, the other for Stellan. Stellan’s hand flew to the hilt of the curved blade at his hip, but Ksenia, anticipating his move, let out a sharp, guttural command.
“By my mandate as Elder! Anyone who resists is an enemy of our people!”
The citizens recoiled, boots scraping back against grit. They remembered Stellan’s raw power, but Ksenia’s words, her long-held position, swayed them. A few nervous shouts of agreement arose from the crowd.
Just as the sentries drew within arm's reach, a sudden, blinding luminescence erupted above the crowd. It wasn’t the soft glow of the fungi, but a sharp, unnatural luminescence that coalesced into a shimmering image. Matvei, perched on a ledge high above, his hand extended, channeled his hidden anomalous ability. A hush fell across the cavern as the projection took shape.
It showed a scene from Stellan’s memory, clear and horrifying. The scent of pine and freezing needle-ice seemed to seep across the rock from the image. A younger Ksenia, her face grim, stood amidst the wreckage of a mountain home. Before her, the cruel-scarred Lumenguild officer, Kholodny, knelt, receiving orders. Ksenia’s lips moved, her voice, though unheard, seemed to echo with chilling clarity from the illusion: “Leave no witnesses. No trace. Their blood will fertilize our victory.” The illusion zoomed in on her face, contorted with a cold, ruthless satisfaction, then panned to reveal the bodies of Stellan’s family, scattered like broken dolls in the snow.
The silence that followed was absolute, heavier than stone. The image lingered for a long, agonizing moment, shuddered, and dissolved into the gloom. The sentries halted, iron tips dipping toward the stone, their faces pale beneath their visors. The crowd, moments ago swayed by Ksenia’s fury, now stared at her with dawning horror, then disbelief, and finally, a simmering, righteous rage.
Ksenia, frozen in place, her face drained of all color, looked from the space where the image had been to the sea of accusing eyes. Her carefully constructed edifice of trust and command shattered around her.
A child's mother, her son wasting away in the infirmary, was the first to move. She lunged, her cry of anguish and fury ripping through the silence, reaching for Ksenia’s throat.
