The Simulation Gambit

The clock above the prep station showed 02:47. Thirteen ticks remained on the digital readout before the pneumatic seals on the freight portal broke. Danica stood at the scrub sink, running raw solvent over her knuckles until the skin burned pink. Across the stainless partition, Stefan stripped the casing off a titanium induction probe, using a honed pairing blade from his knife roll as an improvised lever. "The primary circuit for the drone hatch loops straight through the environmental sub-tier," he murmured, his voice level, stripped of all doubt. "When the relay pops, the security board in the central tower will flag an anomalous pressure drop. You have precisely four ticks to flood the diagnostics with noise before someone takes manual control of the blast doors." "Give me ninety seconds," Danica said. Her chest tightened, but she refused him even a breath of hesitation. "I'll push a synthetic aortic rupture through the main array. The biometric telemetry will mimic terminal ventricular collapse. When the rig screams, the building monitors won't look at a faulty cargo lock." Stefan looked up. The warm kitchen light was gone, replaced by the blue glare of the maintenance alcove. He set his palm against her shoulder, brief and firm. His touch lacked the clinical detachment she had built her life around; it was grounding, human, maddeningly certain. "Don't drown in the code, Doctor. Be ready to run." She broke away, stepping through the double doors into the surgical mock-op suite. The synthetic cadaver lay prone on the hydraulic plinth, bathed in pale halogen. She pulled on latex, stepped into the harness, and drove her palms down onto the sensor pads. "System boot," Danica commanded. The neural feedback collars hummed to life. High-density projectors cast vascular topography across the silicone torso beneath her hands. Her pulse struck a steady, venomous rhythm against her ribs. She dialed the difficulty setting past maximum, overriding the safety baffles, punching the system into full catastrophic failure mode. Sirens howled through the ceiling baffles. Amber light strobed across the white composite tiles. [WARNING: VASCULAR PRESSURE CASCADE FAILURE] [SIMULATION INTEGRITY COMPROMISED: CRITICAL ANOMALY DETECTED] The digital organs ruptured on schedule, spraying holographic arterial mist across her visor. Alarms chimed in rapid succession—one, four, nine alerts flooding the external network node. Exactly as planned. Every diagnostic core in the compound was suddenly blinded by a manufactured medical emergency. Then the primary display glitched. The holographic vitals vanished, replaced by a live feed from the executive tower upstairs. Milena Zeman sat behind an imported rosewood desk, sipping sparkling water from a crystal tumbler. Her sleek, lacquered hair caught the boardroom illumination; her mouth curved into a sharp, poisonous arc. "Still playing God in the basement, Danica?" Milena’s voice cut through the intercom, crisp and dripping with mock pity. "Tomas gave me administrator privileges a short while ago. Did you really think no one would notice a three-hundred-percent load spike on the thermal coils?" Danica froze, her hands hovering above the modeled chest cavity. Her spine turned to pig iron. "You have no standing in this wing, Milena. Get off my frequency." "Oh, but I do," Milena purred, leaning closer to the lens. "I'm your designated clinical overseer now. Tomas signed the committal authorization. The board declared you legally incompetent an hour ago. You don't hold a license. You don't hold a legacy. You're just an erratic case study awaiting long-term sedation." Danica fought back the red surge of fury that threatened to scatter her thoughts. She had to keep Milena talking. Every second Milena spent gloating was a second Stefan had to gut the hatch linkage. "You always were better at bureaucratic forgery than handling a scalpel," Danica said, her voice dropping into a razor-thin drawl. "Tell me, did my father hold your hand while you botched the Morrison valve replacement last week, or did you butcher that poor bastard entirely on your own?" Milena’s smile curdled into an ugly sneer. The tumbler hit the desk with a sharp snap. "Morrison survived because I had the humility to correct your preliminary calculations! You left him a ticking time bomb!" "You clipped the circumflex branch," Danica countered ruthlessly, stepping toward the camera pick-up, projecting absolute disdain. "I saw the intraoperative scans in Jarek's logs before they buried them. You nearly bled him out on table four. You’re a second-rate technician riding on my father’s coattails, terrified that the moment I walk out of this hole, the whole world will see you for the fraud you are." "You aren't walking anywhere!" Milena hissed, her composure fracturing. "I’m locking the quarantine bulkheads. The transport order is already signed. Soon, an orderly team will have you in chemical restraints, and I will personally oversee your transfer to the high-security ward in Brno!" "Try it," Danica spat. A heavy metallic groan vibrated through the floorboards. Down the corridor, Stefan’s voice cracked over her earpiece: *"Danica! Now!"* Danica severed the video feed with a brutal downward swipe of her palm, cutting Milena off mid-sentence. She ripped the harness from her shoulders, kicked through the suite’s swing doors, and sprinted down the narrow industrial passage toward the rear dock. The air tasted of hot solder and burned copper. Stefan stood braced against the massive outer bulkhead. His hands were smeared with black grease, sweat plastering his dark hair to his brow. He had wedged a sheared titanium bolt between the secondary interlocks, and the manual bypass lever was bent at an agonizing angle under his weight. "It’s cycling," he gasped, his muscles straining against the steel latch. "The drone is on the exterior cradle!" Behind them, the overhead speaker system chirped once, twice—then the harsh, synthesized bark of the security mainframe echoed through the subterranean corridors. [INTRUSION DETECTED: SECTOR FOUR CARGO SEAL BREACH] [DISPATCHING TACTICAL RESPONSE TEAM] "Stefan!" Danica yelled, throwing herself against the heavy iron bar beside him. She planted her boots against the deck, throwing every scrap of her strength into the stubborn iron lever. Stefan locked his eyes onto hers. "Push!" Together, they drove the lever downward. A catastrophic crack ripped through the reinforced jamb. Sparks showered over their shoulders as the electromagnetic coils gave out with a deafening hydraulic hiss. The heavy steel door jerked, shuddered, and then slowly began to slide open, revealing the black, freezing mouth of the drainage shaft. Cold night wind blasted into their faces, carrying the bitter scent of pine, diesel exhaust, and raw liberty. Then, from the corridor behind them, heavy tactical boots clattered against the steel stairs.
