Queen of the Weald

The harvester rig shrieked, a sound of tearing metal and protesting circuits. Bramus’s blood, crimson and potent, pulsed within the exposed synthetic matrix, reacting violently with the siphoned magic. A blinding flash erupted, throwing Kresten backward. His cry was a raw, animal sound, utterly devoid of the calculated calm he usually wore. The kinetic pulse emitters on his wrists sparked erratically, then went dead. A sharp snap ran through Cenza's sternum, not of pain, but of a sudden, hollow release. The persistent siphon drag cut clean. Free from the conduit, the artifact's ancient shadow flooded her marrow, cold and thick as tar. It wasn’t just *in* her; it *was* her. The machine’s central column, once a beacon of cold, mechanical efficiency, buckled. Twisted metal groaned, and panels exploded outward in a shower of sparks and black smoke. Snare scrambled down the chassis, ribs clacking, clear of the blast radius just as the unit imploded against the penthouse reinforcement girders. The concussive force hurled Kresten into the reinforced far wall, his ribs cracking on impact. He lay crumpled amidst charred copper wire and split titanium, tailored wool charred, dark blood seeping from his hairline into his collar. Cenza pushed herself up, a new kind of strength humming through her. Her eyes, still bleeding black, now burned with an intensity that seemed to absorb the scant light filtering through the smoke. She raised a hand, and the scattered components of Kresten’s destroyed siphon-engine began to vibrate. Screws tore from their sockets, wires snapped, and sharp shards of plasteel rose into the air as if lifted by an unseen current. “My blood,” Cenza’s voice was a low growl, resonant with the magic that now coursed through her, “was never yours to take.” Kresten scrambled backward, pushing himself against the wall, trying to find purchase, but his legs were unresponsive. Atmospheric pressure spiked in the corridor, dragging the breath straight from his throat. He tracked the ink pooling in Cenza's sclera, his mouth opening in an unvoiced cry. His limitless wealth, his cutting-edge technology, his carefully constructed human superiority—all of it meant nothing now. The metal shrapnel, suspended in the air, spun faster, coalescing into a shimmering, dangerous halo around Cenza. With a flick of her wrist, the shards slammed into Kresten, not piercing him, but pinning him spread-eagled against the wall, a grotesque crucifixion of shattered tech. He gasped, a strangled sound, as the points of metal pressed into his limbs, holding him captive, utterly at her mercy. Bramus, who had been watching in stunned silence, his face a mask of awe and terror, finally stirred. He looked from the shattered Kresten to Cenza, a desperate, pathetic hope flickering in his eyes. He tried to speak, but the words caught in his throat. Tarsia clutched her mangled fingers against her ribs, skin gray with shock, staring without blinking. The Alpha ring, now adorning Snare’s skeletal finger bone, seemed to mock her, a symbol of her utter defeat. Cenza turned her gaze to them, the swirling shadows around her intensifying. “Bramus,” she began, her voice echoing in the ruined hall, “you discarded me. You left me for dead. You begged for forgiveness when you saw my new ‘master,’ not for your treachery.” She paused, a cruel smile playing on her lips. “Your pack title is revoked. Your territory is forfeit. You are nothing.” Bramus’s face crumpled. “Cenza, please! I was wrong! I see it now! We can rebuild, together!” He tried to rise, but an unseen force slammed him back to the ground. “Silence,” Cenza commanded, and the word vibrated through the air, silencing him instantly. “Tarsia.” Her eyes narrowed. “You orchestrated my exile. You sought to steal my place, my life. You sold out our kind for a seat at *his* table.” She gestured with a bare hand at the pinned Kresten, who grunted in pain. “Your deception ends here. Your Luna title means less than nothing.” “No!” Tarsia shrieked, tears streaming down her face. “Cenza, sister, don’t! I’ll serve you! I’ll—” “You will serve no one,” Cenza interrupted, her voice devoid of warmth. “Both of you, Alpha Bramus and Luna Tarsia, are hereby banished. Stripped of all rank, all standing, all protection. Tarnstead will offer you no refuge. The Shrieking Weald, that cursed wasteland, will be your new home. Go, and rot in obscurity.” A low growl rumbled from Snare’s chest as he stepped forward, his newly stabilized form exuding an almost predatory aura. He nudged Bramus with his muzzle, then Tarsia, herding them towards the blown-out magnetic blast doors. The two ruined shifters, broken and defeated, stumbled through, their cries of protest silenced by the closing metal. The wilderness would claim them, just as it had once nearly claimed Cenza. Cenza surveyed the wreckage, the fallen titan of Kresten’s ambition pinned by her power, the fleeing remnants of her past. A profound sense of vindication settled over her, chilling and complete. Snare trotted to her side, his bone-form shimmering with a faint, stable light, his hollow eye sockets fixed on her with unwavering loyalty. The Alpha ring on his finger bone pulsed softly. Together, they stepped across the shattered glass and past the unconscious perimeter guards in the antechamber. The rain-slicked streets of Tarnstead stretched before them, gleaming under the oppressive sky. The city was a sprawling wound, a battleground of concrete and desperation. Cenza paused on the precipice of the building, overlooking the metropolis. The rain kissed her skin, washing away the grime of battle, the last vestiges of her past. Her gaze swept over the towering skyscrapers, the neon glow of the underworld, the hidden alleyways where shifters once cowered and humans hunted. The smog, thick and acrid, seemed to writhe at her command. Then, slowly, subtly, the shadows of Tarnstead began to move. They detached from the grimy walls, flowed from beneath forgotten bridges, coiled from the depths of the city’s deepest chasms. They rippled, coalesced, and swirled around her, a dark, living shroud that whispered her name. The city itself bowed, a silent, monstrous homage to its new Queen.
