Chapter 1 of 10

A Toymaker's Gambit

1.2k words

Kavi’s knife, a sliver of polished skyshard, hummed a low, familiar song against the pale wood. Tiny shavings curled from the block, landing softly on the threadbare blanket covering Miri’s lap. The air in their shelter, a repurposed storage cube inside Sanctuary Hub Gamma, always tasted of recycled oxygen and desperation. But here, with Miri’s gentle hum echoing the knife's rhythm, it smelled only of fresh wood and the faint, sweet scent of her medicinal herbs. Miri, her face a delicate canvas of too-sharp angles and translucent skin, watched his hands with an intensity that belied her frail frame. Her small fingers, usually clutched around her own worn wooden doll, twitched with anticipation. “Is it ready, Kavi?” she whispered, her voice a fragile chime. “Almost, little bloom.” He paused, carefully shaping a wing. “A Corvid-Sparrow. With wings strong enough to carry you across the highest peaks of Old Earth.” He didn’t mention the peaks were now shards of rock floating in the Concordance, nor that Miri, with her ‘Legacy Class,’ would likely never see a true open sky again. His skill, [Object Duplication], was considered useless by most, good only for crafting mundane replicas. But it allowed him to fashion endless wooden toys for Miri, and that was enough. A sharp, metallic chime sliced through the quiet, and Kavi’s hand froze. A shimmering blue panel, translucent as river ice, flickered into existence directly before them, its edges crackling with faint static. The System. The Architect. Every time it appeared, Kavi’s stomach tightened into a cold knot. [ATTENTION: SANCTUARY HUB GAMMA. SCENARIO INITIATION: SURVIVE THE BLOOM.] [OBJECTIVE: ENDURE FOR 24 CYCLES WITHIN THE THALAS JUNGLE. AVOID LETHAL POLLEN BLOOM. MINIMIZE EXPOSURE TO AETHYR TOXINS.] [REWARD FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION: 50 CHRONONS, 1x CLASS-SPECIFIC RESOURCE PACK.] [FAILURE PENALTY: DECOMMISSIONING.] Kavi’s gaze swept Miri’s face, tracing the worry lines already deepening around her eyes. Thalas biome. He’d heard whispers. Bioluminescent flora. Toxins that seeped into everything. He could replicate food, water, basic tools. Not immunity. [ADDITIONAL PARAMETER: LEGACY CLASS TARGET DETECTED WITHIN SCENARIO INSTANCE.] The words burned, a searing brand across the blue panel. Air caught hard in his throat. No. Not again. [A UNIQUE BOUNTY HAS BEEN PLACED ON THE LEGACY CLASS INDIVIDUAL, MIRI. THE FIRST TEAM TO SECURE AND DELIVER MIRI TO A RECOVERY BEACON WILL RECEIVE: 500 CHRONONS, 3x ARCHIVE KEY, 1x S-RANK ARTIFACT CRATE.] The silence that followed was not empty. It throbbed with the sudden, sharp awareness of every other survivor in their cramped quarter of the Hub. Kavi could feel eyes on them, like invisible arrows aimed at Miri. He pulled her closer, his body a shield, even as he knew it was futile. A harsh laugh ripped through the corridor, causing Miri to flinch. “Well, well, if it isn’t the little toy-maker and his pet target.” Roric, leader of the ‘Iron Vipers’ team, sauntered from the shadows of his own, far more spacious, shelter. His grin was a cruel slash across his face, revealing a missing tooth. Behind him, two hulking figures, clad in scavenged combat armor, mirrored his predatory stance. Roric’s gauntlets gleamed, their edges lined with a faint, energy-laced hum. He was a ‘Conduit,’ a rare S-rank combat class, capable of channeling raw energy. Kavi was barely a D-rank support. “Looks like the Architect finally found a use for your sister, Kavi,” Roric sneered, his gaze lingering on Miri’s fragile frame. “A walking prize package. Too bad your little parlor trick won’t do much good against us, will it? Can you clone a bullet? A force field? Your worthless skill only yields more worthless junk.” He kicked idly at a loose piece of scrap metal near Kavi’s feet. “Enjoy the green hell, little mouse. We’ll be collecting our winnings shortly.” The Iron Vipers’ laughter echoed, cold and mocking, as they retreated to their own preparations. Kavi watched them go, his hands trembling with a fury so deep it tasted like ash. He couldn't fight them. Not directly. But Roric's words, intended as a blow, sparked a different kind of fire in Kavi’s mind. He pulled a small, sealed vial from his worn utility belt. It contained a single dose of an anti-toxin serum, a precious, life-saving elixir they’d traded half their remaining Chronons for. It was their last hope against the Thalasian toxins. One dose. For Miri. But if she was a target, they would be hunted. And if they were hunted, the serum might be lost, or stolen, or simply not enough. His fingers tightened around the glass. Roric thought the skill was useless. But it wasn't about simply generating bulk. It was about producing a twin of the item, indistinguishable from the original down to the smallest molecule. Kavi’s eyes narrowed, a quiet resolve hardening his features. He concentrated, the familiar warmth spreading from his core, down his arm, and into his fingertips. A faint, ethereal glow emanated from the vial, a shimmer of blue light, then a soft *pop* sound. Where there had been one, now there were two. Two identical vials, each containing the precious, swirling anti-toxin serum. The original. The copy. He quickly slipped one vial into Miri’s hidden pouch, a small, worn fabric bag sewn into the inside of her tunic. The other he carefully secured in his own, less obvious pocket, buried under a coil of rope. Redundancy. Security. A gambit. “Kavi?” Miri asked softly, looking up at him. She hadn’t seen the process, only the sudden tension that had gripped him. He offered her a small, reassuring smile, his thumb gently stroking her cheek. “It’s nothing, little bloom. Just a moment of thought.” He held out the finished wooden Corvid-Sparrow. Its wings were elegant, its head cocked as if listening to the wind. “Here. A protector.” Miri carefully took the carving, her fingers tracing its smooth contours. “It’s beautiful.” [TELEPORTATION SEQUENCE INITIATING IN 10 CYCLES.] The System’s announcement filled the shelter. A faint blue glow began to emanate from the floor, growing in intensity. Other teams, including Roric’s, were already gathering in designated zones. Kavi hugged Miri tight, pressing his face into her soft, fine hair. The scent of herbs and fear clung to her. He had to keep her safe. He *would* keep her safe. He wasn't a Conduit. He wasn't an S-rank hero. He was a toymaker. And he would find a way. As the blue light pulsed, enveloping them, lifting them from the cramped confines of the Hub, Kavi whispered into her ear, his voice quiet and firm, “I will always find a way.” The world dissolved into a blinding wash of azure. Then, with a jarring lurch, it snapped back into focus. They stood on spongy, iridescent moss, beneath a canopy of colossal, glowing flora. The air hung thick and heavy, shimmering with a fine, golden pollen that pulsed with an otherworldly light. The Thalas canopy. Already, in the distance, the crackle of energy weapons cut through the alien hum of the biome. Roric’s team, not fifty paces away, was already fanning out, their gazes fixed on Kavi and Miri, forming a loose, tightening semicircle around them.
