Chapter 22: Possession and Peace

1.6k words

Golden morning light filtered through the heavy velvet curtains of the master bedroom, painting the polished hardwood floors in warm hues. Aya stirred slowly, her eyelashes fluttering against her cheeks as consciousness returned. Heavy, warm pressure across her waist anchored her to the mattress. Marcel lay beside her, his massive frame radiating heat like a furnace. Shifting slightly, she tried to slip out from under his possessive grip without waking him. "Do not even think about it," a deep, sleep-roughened voice rumbled near her ear. Strong fingers tightened around her hip, pulling her flush against his hard chest. Giggling softly, she turned around to face him, her hands resting on his broad shoulders. "Marcel, I have an early lecture today," she whispered, her fingers tracing the sharp line of his jaw. Dark, intense eyes opened, staring down at her with an intensity that made her breath hitch. "Your lectures can wait," he murmured, his lips brushing against her forehead before sliding down to her cheek. "No, they cannot," she laughed, pushing gently against his chest. "I missed enough classes last semester." Sighing with dramatic reluctance, Marcel released his hold on her, though his eyes never left her face. "You are far too dedicated to this university," he grumbled, sitting up and running a hand through his messy black hair. Sitting up beside him, Aya couldn't help but admire the sharp angle of his collarbone and the smooth, tanned skin of his chest. Life had changed drastically over the past few months. Gone were the days of whispered threats, armed guards pacing the hallways, and the constant, suffocating fear of the mafia underworld. Marcel had officially severed all ties with his former syndicate, transferring his vast resources into a legal, highly lucrative import and export corporation. Now, his biggest daily stressor was managing shipping manifests and negotiating trade tariffs. Peace had finally settled over their lives, wrapping them in a quiet, undisturbed sanctuary. Wrapping a silk robe around her shoulders, Aya hopped out of bed and headed toward the kitchen. "I will make breakfast!" she called out over her shoulder. Walking into the state-of-the-art kitchen, she hummed a soft tune while pulling ingredients from the refrigerator. Minutes later, the smell of burning batter filled the air. Coughing slightly, she waved her hand in front of her face, staring dismayed at the blackened pancake in the pan. "Need some assistance, my little chef?" Marcel's amused voice sounded from the doorway. Leaning against the doorframe, he wore only a pair of dark grey sweatpants, his arms crossed over his muscular chest. "The stove is too hot," she pouted, pointing a spatula at him. "It is not my fault." Chuckling deeply, Marcel walked over and took the spatula from her hand. "Go sit down," he gently nudged her hip with his own. "Before you burn my kitchen down." Smiling warmly, she climbed onto one of the high barstools at the kitchen island, watching him effortlessly flip a perfect, golden pancake. Watching him cook in his sweatpants, looking so domestic and relaxed, filled her chest with an overwhelming warmth. "Regarding that shipping issue at the northern port," she started, remembering their conversation from yesterday. "Did you resolve it?" Marcel paused for a fraction of a second, his expression turning business-like but calm. "Completely settled," he replied, sliding a fresh pancake onto a plate for her. "No trouble?" she questioned, searching his face. "None at all," he assured her, offering a reassuring smile. "A corrupt logistics manager tried to divert a shipment of high-end consumer electronics." "Our legal team handled it swiftly, and the police arrested him this morning." "My former self might have chosen a more... permanent solution, but your husband is a law-abiding businessman now." Relief washed over her, and she took a bite of the delicious pancake, humming in appreciation. "Thank you," she murmured, eyes shining with gratitude. "For what?" he asked, pouring her a glass of fresh orange juice. "For choosing this life," she said softly. "For choosing peace." Leaning across the counter, he captured her lips in a sweet, lingering kiss. "I would choose anything that keeps you smiling," he whispered against her lips. --- By the time they finished breakfast, the clock was ticking, forcing Aya to rush to get dressed. Throwing on a simple emerald green sweater and dark jeans, she grabbed her backpack and ran downstairs. Marcel stood waiting by the front door, dangling the keys to his sleek, black SUV. "Ready, beautiful?" he asked, opening the door for her. Nodding enthusiastically, she slipped her hand into his as they walked out into the crisp morning air. Driving through the city was peaceful, a contrast to the high-speed, paranoid chases of their past. Pulling up to the university gates, Marcel parked the SUV in a designated drop-off zone. "Call me the second your last class ends," he instructed, his voice carrying that familiar, protective edge. "I will," she promised, leaning over to press a kiss to his cheek. Opening the passenger door, she stepped out, waving back at him. Walking toward the main campus building, she felt his eyes tracking her every movement. "Aya! Over here!" a voice called out from the courtyard. Turning, she saw Rayan, a tall, thin classmate with round glasses, waving a folder of papers. Inside the SUV, Marcel's eyes narrowed instantly. Grip tightening on the leather steering wheel until his knuckles turned stark white, he watched the young man approach his wife. Who is that? he thought, his chest tightening with an unexpected, fierce surge of possessiveness. Rayan smiled warmly as Aya reached him, handing her the stack of economics notes she had asked for. "I highlighted the key sections for the exam," Rayan explained, his hand brushing against hers as she took the papers. Watching from the car, Marcel’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek. Every instinct in his body screamed at him to get out of the vehicle and tear that boy's hands off her. Aya, completely oblivious to her husband's internal storm, laughed at something Rayan said, thanking him genuinely. "You are a lifesaver, Rayan," she said, clutching the folder to her chest. "Anytime, Aya," Rayan replied, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. "Maybe we could study together in the library later?" "I will have to check my schedule," she offered a polite, friendly smile before waving goodbye and walking toward her lecture hall. Sitting in the idling SUV, Marcel watched the boy stare after his wife for a few seconds too long. Growling under his breath, Marcel put the car in gear and tore away from the curb, his mind racing with possessive jealousy. --- Hours passed, and for the first time in months, Marcel found himself unable to focus on his corporate spreadsheets. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the young classmate smiling at Aya, touching her hand. Stepping out of his office early, he drove back to the university, arriving thirty minutes before her classes ended. Waiting impatiently by the car, he leaned against the hood, his arms crossed, looking intimidatingly handsome in his tailored suit. Students passing by gave him a wide berth, sensing the dangerous aura radiating from him. Sliding his hands into his pockets, he spotted Aya walking out of the building. "Marcel!" she called out, her face lighting up as she hurried toward him. Before she could say another word, he gripped her waist, lifting her slightly to press a firm, deeply possessive kiss onto her lips right in front of the crowd of students. Gasping into the kiss, she wrapped her arms around his neck, utterly surprised by his sudden intensity. Breaking the kiss, he glared over her shoulder, spotting Rayan standing nearby, looking thoroughly intimidated. "Get in the car," Marcel murmured, his voice thick and demanding. Glancing between her husband and her classmate, Aya suddenly realized what was happening. "Are you jealous?" she teased, a playful smirk playing on her lips as they drove away. Silence filled the luxury vehicle, Marcel refusing to look at her as he kept his eyes glued to the road. "Marcel, answer me," she giggled, poking his arm. "Were you jealous of Rayan?" Narrowing his eyes, he gripped the steering wheel tighter. "He was looking at you. He touched your hand." Laughing out loud, she leaned back against her seat. "He was just giving me study notes! He is just a classmate." "I do not care," Marcel growled, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous register. "No man looks at what is mine." Reaching their mansion, he parked the car and immediately got out, walking around to open her door. Before she could step out, he scooped her up in his arms, carrying her easily up the grand staircase. "Marcel! Put me down!" she squealed, laughing as she hit his chest playfully. Ignoring her protests, he carried her straight into their master bedroom, kicking the door shut behind them. Setting her down on the edge of the mattress, he hovered over her, his large frame completely eclipsing the light. Suddenly, her phone buzzed inside her backpack, which was resting on the floor. Reaching down, Marcel zipped open her bag and pulled out her phone before she could react. "Marcel, what are you doing?" she gasped, trying to grab it. Looking at the screen, his face darkened as a new text message popped up. "Hey Aya, just wanted to make sure you got home safe. Let me know if you want to study tonight - Rayan." Instantly, Marcel's eyes flared with a dark, possessive fire as he locked eyes with her.
