Chapter 13: Flight Into The Abyss
1.9k words
Turbulence shook the private jet, vibrating through the leather seats and sending a chill down Aya's spine.
Marcel sat opposite her, his face carved from ice, eyes locked onto the glowing screen of his satellite phone.
Anger radiated from him in waves, visible in the tight line of his jaw and the white-knuckle grip he held on the device.
Aya held her breath, watching the pulse jump in his throat. She knew that look.
Something had gone wrong, terribly wrong, shattering the fragile illusion of their escape.
Slowly, Marcel looked up, his dark eyes softening just a fraction when they met hers.
He slipped the phone into his jacket pocket, attempting to mask the raw fury that threatened to consume him.
But she saw right through the mask.
'What is it?' she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the jet engines.
Her hands trembled in her lap, fingers twisting together as the fear she had tried so hard to bury clawed its way back to the surface.
Marcel didn't answer immediately. He stood up, his towering frame dominant in the narrow cabin, and crossed the small distance between them.
Sinking onto the bench beside her, he reached out, his large, warm hand covering her cold fingers.
His touch was a sudden anchor, grounding her in the midst of the rising panic.
'Nothing you need to worry about, mia cara,' he murmured, his voice low, a gravelly purr meant to soothe.
Lies were written in the tense lines around his eyes, and they both knew it.
Aya shook her head, pulling her hands from his grip only to place them against his broad chest.
Beneath her palms, his heart hammered a frantic, heavy rhythm that betrayed his calm facade.
'Do not lie to me, Marcel,' she pleaded, looking directly into his gaze.
'We ran from the fire, we left everything behind, and now you look like we are flying straight into another trap.'
A heavy sigh escaped his lips, his shoulders dropping slightly as the weight of his empire’s collapse pressed down on him.
He reached up, gently cupping her cheek with his palm, his thumb brushing over her cheekbone.
Warmth flooded her skin where he touched her, a stark contrast to the freezing fear in her chest.
'Andre knows,' Marcel confessed, the words tasting like poison on his tongue.
His thumb traced her lower lip, his gaze dropping to watch the movement.
'He sent a message. He knows exactly where this plane is heading.'
A gasp caught in Aya's throat, her eyes widening as the reality of their situation crashed down.
Nowhere was safe.
No matter how far they flew, the shadow of his past would follow them, hunting them down to the ends of the earth.
Terrified, she pressed herself closer to him, seeking the shelter of his massive frame.
Marcel wrapped his powerful arms around her, pulling her onto his lap and holding her so tightly she could barely breathe.
But she didn't want to breathe; she only wanted to disappear into his strength.
His chin rested on the top of her head, his breath warm through her hair.
'I will not let him touch you,' he vowed, his tone dripping with a dark, lethal promise.
'I burned my world to keep you safe, Aya. I will burn his next if he steps near us.'
Her heart swelled at his words, a complex mixture of fear and intense, undeniable affection twisting in her soul.
He was a monster to the world, but to her, he was a protector, a shield against the horrors of his own making.
She looked up, her lips parting as she searched his face in the dim cabin light.
Without a word, Marcel leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a deep, desperate kiss.
This was not the harsh, dominant possessiveness of their first days together.
Instead, it was a tender, burning hunger, filled with the unspoken fear of losing her.
His tongue parted her lips gently, tasting her, claiming her with a soft intensity that made her entire body ache with longing.
Aya wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, her fingers tangling in the thick hair at the nape of his neck.
She surrendered to the heat of his mouth, letting the sensation wash away the terror of Andre's threat.
In this small, flying metal tube, high above the clouds, there was only him.
Only the taste of him, the scent of expensive tobacco and expensive cologne, and the crushing pressure of his embrace.
Marcel groaned deep in his chest, the sound vibrating against her collarbone as his lips slid down to her jaw.
He pressed soft, lingering kisses along her neck, finding the sensitive spot beneath her ear.
A soft sigh escaped her lips, her body turning to liquid under his touch.
Even with the world ending around them, the physical pull between them was an unstoppable force.
He gripped her waist, his large hands kneading her soft skin through the thin fabric of her clothes.
Every touch was a declaration of ownership, but now, she found a strange, desperate comfort in being his.
He pulled back slightly, his eyes dark with desire and a fierce, protective instinct.
He looked at her face, memorizing every line, every curve, as if she were the only beautiful thing left in his dark world.
'You are mine, Aya,' he whispered against her skin, his breath hot and ragged.
'Never forget that. No matter who comes for us, you belong to me.'
She nodded, unable to find her voice, her heart beating in lockstep with his.
---
Hours ticked by in a haze of tense silence and stolen touches.
Marcel remained beside her, his hand resting firmly on her thigh, a constant physical connection that neither of them wanted to break.
He spent the time typing rapidly on an encrypted device, coordinate lines and secure servers flashing across his screen.
Aya watched his profile, the sharp angle of his nose, the dark stubble shadowing his jaw, the sheer intelligence radiating from his focused expression.
She realized then that he was not just a brute; he was a master strategist, a king who had lost his throne but still held all the secrets.
Eventually, he set the device aside and rubbed his temples, fatigue showing in the slight slump of his shoulders.
Aya reached over, her fingers gently massaging his tense neck, feeling the rigid muscles slowly yield to her touch.
Marcel leaned back into her hands, a low sigh of appreciation escaping his lips.
'Where are we going, Marcel?' she asked softly, her voice a soothing balm in the quiet cabin.
'If Andre knows our destination, we cannot land there.'
Marcel opened his eyes, his gaze sharp and calculating.
'We are not landing there,' he replied, a grim smile playing on his lips.
'Our official flight plan says we are heading to a secure estate in the south of France.'
'But I have already rerouted us.'
Curiosity flickered in her eyes as she waited for him to elaborate.
'We are dropping off the grid entirely,' he continued, his voice dropping to a whisper.
'There is a small, private airstrip in Spain, owned by an old contact who owes me his life.'
'From there, we take a boat to a secluded island off the coast, a place that doesn't exist on any map Andre can access.'
Hope, fragile and sweet, bloomed in Aya's chest.
Maybe they could actually escape.
Maybe they could build a life away from the blood, the guns, and the constant fear of death.
She leaned her head against his shoulder, her eyes closing as the exhaustion of the night finally began to take its toll.
Marcel wrapped his arm around her, pulling her close against his side, offering his body as a shield against the cold air of the cabin.
Holding her like this, he felt a strange sense of peace he had never experienced in his entire life.
Power, money, respect—none of it compared to the feeling of her breathing softly against his chest.
He fell asleep with his arms locked around her, a silent guardian in the night sky.
---
A sudden, violent jolt woke Aya from her light slumber.
Alarms were blaring inside the cabin, a harsh, repetitive red light pulsing against the dark leather interior.
Marcel was already awake, his body tense and alert, his eyes locked on the cockpit door.
Panic seized Aya's heart as the plane tilted sharply to the left, sending her sliding against the armrest.
'Stay here!' Marcel ordered, his voice cutting through the noise of the alarms like a blade.
He stood up, balancing effortlessly despite the steep angle of the cabin floor, and made his way to the cockpit.
Aya watched him go, her hands gripping the edges of her seat so tightly her knuckles turned white.
Fear choked her, making it impossible to breathe as the jet shuddered again, losing altitude rapidly.
Through the small window, she could see nothing but thick, black clouds and the occasional flash of lightning.
Moments later, Marcel returned, his face a mask of grim determination.
He didn't look panicked, but the absolute coldness in his eyes sent a shiver straight down her spine.
'What's happening?' she screamed over the roar of the engines and the shrieking alarms.
Marcel reached her, grabbing a parachute harness from the emergency locker and quickly fitting it over her shoulders.
'Our fuel lines have been compromised,' he said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion as he worked with practiced speed.
'Andre didn't just track us. He had someone sabotage the plane before we even took off.'
Terror, pure and paralyzing, washed over her as she realized what he was doing.
'No, no, Marcel, we can't jump!' she cried, tears spilling over her eyelashes.
He ignored her protests, tightening the straps around her waist and shoulders until the harness was snug against her body.
Then, he fitted his own harness, his movements efficient, calm, and terrifyingly precise.
Taking her face in both of his hands, he forced her to look at him, his gaze burning with an intensity that demanded her absolute focus.
'Look at me, Aya,' he commanded, his voice raw.
'I am not going to let you die. Do you hear me?'
She nodded frantically, her body shaking so hard she could barely stand.
'We jump together. I will hold you. You do not let go of me, no matter what.'
He pulled her in for one last, hard, desperate kiss, tasting of salt and adrenaline.
Stepping back, he grabbed the manual release lever for the cabin door.
With a violent heave, he pulled the lever down.
Deafening wind roared into the cabin, sucking out loose papers and freezing the air instantly.
Aya screamed, the sound lost in the tempest as Marcel pulled her to the open doorway, the dark, empty void of the night sky yawning beneath them.
Just as they prepared to leap into the abyss, a sudden metallic clatter echoed from the back of the cabin, and a shadowy figure stepped out from the cargo hold, a gun pointed directly at Marcel's chest.
